Accuracy of skin temperature over carotid artery in estimation of core temperature in infants and young children during general anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Core temperature monitoring is essential in children under general anaesthesia as they are more susceptible to hypothermia. We aimed to use skin temperature over the carotid artery (Tsk-carotid) with correction factors (Cf) to estimate core temperature. Primary outcome measure was to assess the sensitivity of Tsk-carotid with Cf for detecting hypothermia. Secondary outcome measure was to assess the specificity of Tsk-carotid with Cf for detecting hypothermia. METHODS: First consecutive 50 patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included in modelling group and next

Accuracy of next-generation wireless skin temperature sensors during exercise-heat stress.

Skin temperature is fundamental in characterising human thermoregulatory responses. Wired probes, although accurate, restrict movement and are impractical outside laboratory settings. The iButton (DS1922L; Maxim Integrated, USA) is a widely used wireless alternative but does not meet the precision recommended by ISO 9886 and permits only retrospective data retrieval. A recently developed wireless sensor, the eTemp Performance (BodyCAP, France), claims to address these limitations but has not been validated independently. Here, we compared the eTemp and iButton against a wired thermocouple refe

[Detection of Fever Using Continuous Skin Temperature Monitoring in Hospitalized Older Adults].

BACKGROUND: The continuous monitoring of body surface temperature has been proven to help detect potential fever events in hospitalized patients. However, the efficacy of using body surface temperature to detect fever in older adults remains unclear due to the relatively low and slower-to-change body surface temperature in this population. PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate 1) the relationship between changes in body surface and routine tympanic temperatures, 2) the correlation between body surface temperature measurement frequency and detection of fever, and 3) the factors relat

Assessment of skin temperature during regional anaesthesia-What the anaesthesiologist should know.

Body temperature homeostasis is accurately regulated by complex feedback-driven neuronal mechanisms, which involve a multitude of thermoregulatory pathways. Thus, core temperature is constantly maintained within a narrow range. As one of the most effective regulatory systems skin temperature is dependent on skin blood flow. Skin blood flow in turn is highly dependent on sympathetic activity. Regional anaesthesia leads to blockade not only of somatosensory and motor nerve fibres but also of sympathetic fibres. As a consequence, vasoconstrictor tonic activity is abrogated and a vasodilation lead

Can exercise-induced muscle damage be related to changes in skin temperature?

OBJECTIVE: Measurement of skin temperature using infrared thermography has become popular in sports, and has been proposed as an indicator of exercise-induced muscle damage after exercise. However, the relationship between skin temperature and exercise-induced muscle damage is still unclear. Here we set out to investigate the relationship between skin temperature and exercise-induced muscle damage. APPROACH: Twenty untrained participants completed a protocol of exercise for calf muscles. Before and after exercise blood samples were collected to determine creatine kinase and acetylcholinestera

Nongrafted Skin Area Best Predicts Exercise Core Temperature Responses in Burned Humans.

UNLABELLED: Grafted skin impairs heat dissipation, but it is unknown to what extent this affects body temperature during exercise in the heat. PURPOSE: We examined core body temperature responses during exercise in the heat in a group of individuals with a large range of grafts covering their body surface area (BSA; 0%-75%). METHODS: Forty-three individuals (19 females) were stratified into groups based on BSA grafted: control (0% grafted, n = 9), 17%-40% (n = 19), and >40% (n = 15). Subjects exercised at a fixed rate of metabolic heat production (339 ± 70 W; 4.3 ± 0.8 W·kg) in an environmen

Diagnostic values for skin temperature assessment to detect diabetes-related foot complications.

BACKGROUND: Skin temperature assessment is a promising modality for early detection of diabetic foot problems, but its diagnostic value has not been studied. Our aims were to investigate the diagnostic value of different cutoff skin temperature values for detecting diabetes-related foot complications such as ulceration, infection, and Charcot foot and to determine urgency of treatment in case of diagnosed infection or a red-hot swollen foot. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The plantar foot surfaces of 54 patients with diabetes visiting the outpatient foot clinic were imaged with an infrared camera. Ni

The utility of skin surface temperature measurement in the prediction of diabetic foot ulceration.

AIM: Temperature is a marker of inflammation. Research has shown that by measuring skin surface temperature in those with a history of diabetic foot ulceration (DFU), tissue damage can be identified early and reduce rates of subsequent DFU. This study considered whether measuring skin surface temperature using infra-red thermometry can identify early tissue damage and inform clinical practice in a general population with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). METHOD: The data presented was taken from a prospective observational study of risk factors in patients with Diabetes. As part of this study, temperat

Skin temperature response to thermal stimulus in patients with hyperhidrosis: A comparative study.

Primary hyperhidrosis (HH), the excessive sweating exceeding physiological demand, has been associated to a complex dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system which may explain the disfunction in sweating but may also cause unrevealed alterations in skin blood flow regulation. In fact, HH patients present a sympathetic over-function with less reflex bradycardia in response to the Valsalva maneuver and higher sympathetic skin responses. We aimed to identify response patterns to room thermal stimulus in HH patients compared to a control group in order to investigate putative differences in bloo

Inhibition of Fungal Pathogens across Genotypes and Temperatures by Amphibian Skin Bacteria.

Symbiotic bacteria may dampen the impacts of infectious diseases on hosts by inhibiting pathogen growth. However, our understanding of the generality of pathogen inhibition by different bacterial taxa across pathogen genotypes and environmental conditions is limited. Bacterial inhibitory properties are of particular interest for the amphibian-killing fungal pathogens (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans), for which probiotic applications as conservation strategies have been proposed. We quantified the inhibition strength of five putatively B. dendrobatidis-inhi

Skin Surface Temperatures Measured by Thermal Imaging Aid in the Diagnosis of Cellulitis.

Warmth is a characteristic but nondiagnostic feature of cellulitis. We assessed the diagnostic utility of skin surface temperature in differentiating cellulitis from pseudocellulitis. Adult patients presenting to the emergency department of a large urban hospital with presumed cellulitis were enrolled. Patients were randomized to dermatology consultation (n = 40) versus standard of care (n = 32). Thermal images of affected and unaffected skin were obtained for each patient. Analysis was performed on dermatology consultation patients to establish a predictive model for cellulitis, which was the

The effects of sodium oxybate on core body and skin temperature regulation in narcolepsy.

Patients suffering from narcolepsy type 1 show altered skin temperatures, resembling the profile that is related to sleep onset in healthy controls. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of sodium oxybate, a widely used drug to treat narcolepsy, on the 24-h profiles of temperature and sleep-wakefulness in patients with narcolepsy and controls. Eight hypocretin-deficient male narcolepsy type 1 patients and eight healthy matched controls underwent temperature measurement of core body and proximal and distal skin twice, and the sleep-wake state for 24 h. After the baseline as

The vulva skin microclimate: influence of panty liners on temperature, humidity and pH.

Many women use panty liners between menstrual periods. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the use of such products might influence the vulva skin. Twelve healthy women were studied on four occasions with three different product constructions and on one occasion without products. Temperature, surface wetness and surface pH were measured on vulva skin. Mean skin temperature when the women were wearing a conventional panty liner (with a non-breathable back sheet) was 35.9 degrees C, compared to 34.4 degrees C when wearing no panty liner at all (p < 0.01) and 34.5 degrees C when usin

Sweating and skin temperature responses of normal and anhidrotic horses to intravenous adrenaline.

Anhidrosis has been recognised for over half a century, but despite some excellent epidemiological studies, there has been little progress in understanding the aetiology of the condition. Using a modified ventilated capsule, we obtained dynamic, quantitative data on sweating responses in anhidrotic horses and normal sweating controls from the same environment. Ten horses with current seasonal anhidrosis and 10 matched normal sweating controls were selected. Each horse was given two 10 min infusions of 1 and 2 micrograms/kg/min adrenaline, separated by at least 6 h. Sweating responses and skin

The effect of increasing temperature on skin blood flow and red cell deformability.

Using laser Doppler techniques in nine healthy volunteers, we contrasted the effect of increasing local skin temperature at the elbow, a skin site with nutritive microvasculature, and the finger pulp, with predominantly arteriovenous anastomic (AVA) perfusion). We also assessed flow at the finger dorsum, with contributions of both types of microvasculature. In parallel with the laser Doppler studies, we determined the effect of increasing temperature on the red cell deformability of our subjects, using the new technique of Cell Transit Time Analysis (CTTA). Thermal stimulation produced very la

Comparisons of rectal, femoral, axillary, and skin-to-mattress temperatures in stable neonates.

The purpose of this study was to compare four sites for temperature recording in the neonate: rectum, femoral, axilla, and skin-to-mattress. Simultaneous measurements were made at the four sites in 99 stable, term neonates. Temperatures were recorded each minute for 15 minutes. The optimal temperatures (highest temperature recorded minus 0.2 degrees F) did not vary across the four sites, but there were significant differences in the mean times required to achieve optimal temperature and in the optimal placement times (time required for 90% of the subjects to reach optimal temperature). Is it getting hot in here? The effects of VR headset microclimate temperature on perceived thermal discomfort, VR sickness, and skin temperature.

Thermal discomfort is a driver of negative user experiences with modern VR headsets since they are similar to head-worn gaming computers. Here, we examined the effect of microclimate temperature (MCT; i.e., the air between headset and user) and the effect of standing and seated use on thermal discomfort for a goggle style headset. Users played VR games across three 48-min sessions with different thermal profiles ranging between 28°-43 °C. Perceived thermal and weight discomfort were rated by participants every 12-min. Thermal, but not weight comfort declined during the study period as MCT incr
