Sleep duration is an important determinant of cardiovascular health, yet the adverse effects of long sleep duration remain underexplored. While short sleep has well-documented associations with increased cardiovascular risk, emerging evidence highlights a U-shaped relationship, with excessive sleep also linked to adverse outcomes. This systematic review evaluates the association between prolonged sleep duration and cardiovascular health outcomes, including coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), hypertension, heart failure (HF), and atherosclerosis. A systematic sear

Nocturnal blood pressure (BP) is associated with cardiovascular events independently of daytime BP. Isolated nocturnal hypertension (INH), defined by elevated nocturnal BP with normal daytime BP, increases cardiovascular risk. However, its underlying; mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to assess the association between nocturnal BP and INH with sleep quality and duration. This cross-sectional study analyzed 2297 individuals (57% women, 49.5 ± 15 years) using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) to evaluate the relationship between INH and sleep quality. Individuals with secondar

Whilst previous reviews have identified that shorter sleep duration is associated with poorer cognition in children, it is not known whether short sleep duration increases daytime sleepiness compared with sufficient or extended sleep. A systematic search of the literature identified 17 studies to be included in the meta-analysis. When excluding two sleep deprivation studies, short sleep duration was associated with higher daytime sleepiness compared with sufficient or extended sleep duration, standardised mean difference: 0.74 (95 % CI 0.45; 1.02). There was substantial variation in the extent

IMPORTANCE: Although questionnaire-based cross-sectional research suggests that screen time before bed correlates with poor sleep, self-reported data seem unlikely to capture the complexity of modern screen use, requiring objective night-by-night measures to advance this field.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether evening screen time is associated with sleep duration and quality that night in youths.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This repeated-measures cohort study was performed from March to December 2021 in participant homes in Dunedin, New Zealand. Participants included healthy youths aged

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether nighttime sleep duration and snoring status were associated with incident heart failure (HF).
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted based on Kailuan cohort including 93 613 adults free of pre-existing cardiovascular diseases. Sleep duration and snoring status were assessed by self-reported questionnaire. Incident HF cases were ascertained by medical records. Cox proportional hazards model was applied to calculate the HR and 95% CI of risk of developing HF. Mediation analysis was used to understand whether hypertension and diabetes mediated the associatio

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to extend research on napping and sleep behaviors in collegiate athletes, and to compare nappers and non-nappers on sleep quality and duration. Methods: Current varsity, club, and intramural athletes between 18-29 years completed the Short Napping Behavior Scale, Pittsburgh Quality Sleep Index, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Results: Approximately 72% (129/179) reported napping. There were no significant differences in outcomes between nap frequency groups on sleep quality (Χ2(3)=4.97, p=.17) or duration (Χ2(3)=1.2

OBJECTIVE: Infants born with gestation-related risks (low birth weight (LBW), small for gestational age (SGA), and prematurely born infants) are faced with a cascade of developmental issues. The aim of this study was to investigate whether infants with gestation-related risks have different patterns of parent-reported sleep duration and nocturnal awakenings than children without these risk factors.
METHODS: Information on sleep duration and nocturnal awakenings was obtained by parental report at age 6 and 18 months in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, which is a population-based lo

INTRODUCTION: Developmental alterations to the circadian rhythm, in combination with lifestyle changes (eg, changes in school start time, part-time employment), contribute to insufficient sleep among youth. Insufficient sleep is associated with poor eating behaviours in other developmental stages (ie, childhood, adulthood); however, it is currently unknown if this finding generalises to youth. Consequently, identifying the characteristics and results of the studies examining this relationship in youth populations is necessary to guide the future direction of research in this field.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Short sleep duration (SSD) is common among deployed soldiers. The prevalence of SSD during redeployment, however, is unknown.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of a brigade combat team (n = 3152 US Army soldiers) surveyed 90-180 days after completing a 6-15 month deployment to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Survey items targeted sleep habits and comorbid medical conditions. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to calculate adjusted odds ratios of medical comorbidities associated with SSD.
SETTING: US Army Infantry Post.
SUBJECTS: All soldier

This study investigated the relationship between self-reported sleep factors (sleep duration, insomnia, use of sleeping medicine, probable sleep apnoea and feelings of fatigue and tiredness) with cognitive functioning in 5177 people aged 30 years or older from a cross-sectional representative sample of the adult population in Finland (The Finnish Health 2000 Survey). Previous studies have indicated a U-shaped association between increased health risks and sleep duration; we hypothesized a U-shaped association between sleep duration and cognitive functioning. Objective cognitive functioning was

BACKGROUND: The durations of untreated stage 1 (early stage, haemo-lymphatic) and stage 2 (late stage, meningo-encephalitic) human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) due to Trypanosoma brucei gambiense are poorly quantified, but key to predicting the impact of screening on transmission. Here, we outline a method to estimate these parameters.
METHODS: We first model the duration of stage 1 through survival analysis of untreated serological suspects detected during Médecins Sans Frontières interventions in Uganda and Sudan. We then deduce the duration of stage 2 based on the stage 1 to

1. Observational studies have implicated habitual sleep duration as a risk factor for mortality and morbidity. Part of this association might be mediated by obesity, which has also been associated with habitual sleep duration. These studies generate wide media attention because of the public's health concerns surrounding increasing obesity and the temporal association with the other modern "epidemic" of sleep loss. Some commentators have recommended public health interventions to control obesity via habitual sleep duration modification. We conducted a critical review of the available literatur

OBJECTIVE: Habitual short sleep duration is a common practice linked to weight gain and risk of obesity. Our objective was to examine the association between sleep duration with other behaviors, such as physical activity and nutrition, which are important for obesity prevention efforts.
METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from rural communities in Missouri, Tennessee, and Arkansas (N=1203). Controlling for covariates, we assessed the association between short sleep duration (<7 h vs. 7-8 h) and obesity, not meeting vigorous physical activity requirements, low fruit and vegetable consumption

It was previously shown that an auditory stimulus given prior to and throughout a rapid eye movement (REM) sleep period was capable of inducing a significant increase in REM sleep duration and pontogeniculo-occipital (PGO) spike density. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the increase in REM duration is dependent on PGO spike density. We administered atropine to cats at doses of 0.1-0.6 mg/kg and the effects on REM duration and PGO spikes was determined. The doses of 0.2 and 0.3 mg/kg of atropine were then utilized to compare REM sleep periods with and without auditory stimulat

BACKGROUND: Empirical data on adult sleep health are scarce in many low-income countries, despite the significant health risks associated with inadequate sleep. To help address this gap in low-income countries, the World Sleep Society's Global Sleep Health Taskforce recommends applying evidence from high-income settings - such as guidance from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine/Sleep Research Society AASM/SRS) and the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) to inform the development of sleep health policies and programs.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the appropriateness of adapting existing consensus re

Recent research explores the associations between maladaptive personality constructs proposed by the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) and general psychopathology whereas research on sleep hygiene behaviors and sleep duration is poor. This study first aimed to classify an adult population based on bedtime, mobile phone use before bedtime, and sleep duration. The second aim was to compare the AMPD trait domains including negative affectivity, detachment, antagonism, disinhibition, and psychoticism across the derived clusters. The cross-sectional study consisted of 481 coll

Increased arterial stiffness is independently associated with cardiovascular risk. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and sleep duration (SDUR) may contribute to increased arterial stiffness, but it is unclear whether this association is modulated by gender. We aimed to evaluate the potential impact of gender in modulating the association of OSA and SDUR with arterial stiffness. Participants from the ELSA-Brasil study performed sleep assessments with portable polygraph to define OSA severity and SDUR by 1-week wrist actigraphy. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured using a standard technique witho
