Seroprevalence of Borrelia IgG antibodies among individuals from Eastern Slovakia.

OBJECTIVES: Lyme borreliosis is a tick-borne disease of increasing incidence and public concern. Our cross-sectional study was aimed at evaluating seroprevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi in a group of respondents from Eastern Slovakia. METHODS: In total, 515 blood samples collected in 2013-2016 were analysed with NovaLisaTM, NovaTec - Borrelia IgG/IgM kit (Immunodiagnostica, Dietzenbach, Germany). Positive and equivocal IgG-antibody results were further examined with immunoblotting (LYMECHECK® OPTIMA IgG and IgM kits, BIOSYNEX, France). Data detected by serological methods were matched with th

Milk outbreaks of tick-borne encephalitis in Slovakia, 2012-2016.

OBJECTIVE: Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is most commonly transmitted to humans via the bite of an infected tick. Alimentary infection through the consumption of TBEV-contaminated dairy products is also well-documented and is responsible for some diseases in endemic areas. The aim of the study was to emphasize the risk of contracting tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) by consuming raw milk and dairy products and to describe TBE epidemics in Slovakia for the period 2012-2016. METHODS: The data on epidemics were obtained from the Annual Reports for the period 2012-2016 available on the websit

Imported new world cutaneous leishmaniasis in a traveller from Slovakia.

We present a case of imported leishmaniasis in a 31-year-old woman from Slovakia, who visited the countries of South America for three months in 2011. On 29 and 31 August 2011, she was probably infected with Leishmania parasites in the jungles of Ecuador. Approximately one week after returning to Slovakia, a small papules appeared on patient's left leg. Another wound was found after two weeks. Both ulcers were enlarging. We proved amastigote forms of Leishmania spp. only in repeated dermal scrapings from the edge of the ulcer by Giemsa staining after negative results from examination of a woun

Peroxisomal D-bifunctional protein deficiency: First case reports from Slovakia.

D-bifunctional protein deficiency (#OMIM 261515) is a rare autosomal recessive hereditary metabolic disorder causing severe clinical and biochemical abnormalities that are usually fatal in the course of the first years of life. This disease is classified as single enzyme peroxisomal disorder affecting the β-oxidation pathway in this compartment. In this paper we present a full overview of the clinical presentation, magnetic resonance imaging, biochemical and molecular data of two Slovak D-bifunctional protein deficient patients. In the clinical presentation of both patients severe generalized

Isolation of Arsenophonus nasoniae from Ixodes ricinus ticks in Slovakia.

The tick Ixodes ricinus is the most prevalent and widely distributed tick species in Central Europe, commonly found in woodlands, heaths, and forests and particularly abundant in the Alpine region. This tick readily bites humans and transmits a number of bacterial and viral pathogens. We collected 10 live nymphs of I. ricinus ticks from vegetation in the Rovinka forest, Slovakia, and isolated a strain of Arsenophonus nasoniae from one tick using the BME/CTVM2 cell line. A new isolate was then subcultured on axenic media (Columbia agar supplemented with 5% sheep blood). To the best of our knowl

Borrelia lusitaniae and green lizards (Lacerta viridis), Karst Region, Slovakia.

In Europe, spirochetes within the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex are transmitted by Ixodes ricinus ticks. Specific associations are described between reservoir hosts and individual genospecies. We focused on green lizard (Lacerta viridis) as a host for ticks and potential host for borreliae. In 2004 and 2005, a total of 146 green lizards infested by ticks were captured, and 469 I. ricinus ticks were removed. Borrelial infection was detected in 16.6% of ticks from lizards. Of 102 skin biopsy specimens collected from lizards, 18.6% tested positive. The most frequently detected genospeci

[2 clinico-genetic types of primary congenital glaucomas in Slovakia].

The authors present the results of a 20-year follow-up of a group of 125 patients with primary congenital glaucoma. Based on 10 fundamentally different indicators they provided evidence of two clinical forms of primary congenital glaucoma depending on the ethnic origin and type of heredity. In Slovakia is found: a/autosomal recessive hereditary primary congenital glaucoma in the gypsy population with an identified gene locus GLC3A with a different clinical picture, severe course and unfavourable therapeutic results; b/multifactorial primary congenital glaucoma in the remaining population of Sl

Ricettsioses studies. 2. Natural foci of rickettsioses in east Slovakia.

Natural foci of Q fever and of spotted fever group rickettsiae in the Kosice district of east Slovakia are described and discussed. It was established that the natural focus of Q fever was a secondary one. Cattle were observed to be the main source of human infection and a high proportion of synanthropic rodents was found to be infested with Coxiella burnetii. The natural focus of spotted fever group rickettsiae was shown to be of a primary character, such rickettsiae circulating among ticks and small mammals. It is suggested that natural foci of spotted fever group rickettsiae in east Slovaki

Conservation genetic evaluation of Juniperus communis sensu lato in Slovakia.

This study explores the population structure, hybridization, and adaptation of Juniperus communis sensu lato in the context of its current habitat fragmentation, using inter-primer binding site markers and needle morphometry. Three native juniper taxa in Slovakia were analyzed: J. communis ssp. communis, J. communis ssp. nana, and their putative hybrid, J. communis nothovar. intermedia. The results reveal a moderate overall structure (ΦPT = 0.115, p = 0.001), indicating high gene flow within ssp. communis and low gene flow between ssp. communis and ssp. nana. However, after correcting for non-

Peripartum hysterectomy: A 9-year population-based study in Slovakia.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence of peripartum hysterectomy (PH) in Slovakia. Additionally, we wanted to describe reasons for the procedure, associated clinical circumstances, and complications. METHODS: This was a descriptive, population-based study among women who underwent PH in Slovakia between January 2012 and December 2020. Peripartum hysterectomy was defined as surgical removal of the uterus from the peripartum period up to 42 days postpartum. Data were obtained retrospectively from the standardized questionnaires that are completed in Slovakia for any case of PH. The background popu

Thelazia callipaeda in Slovakia - From sporadic cases to endemic areas.

Spirurid nematode Thelazia callipaeda, transmitted by the fruit fly Phortica variegata, is a causative agent of an ocular parasitic disease called also canine thelaziosis. Dogs, cats, and wild canids are considered the primary definitive hosts for the parasite, but humans may also serve as aberrant definitive hosts. For long decades the geographic range of T. callipaeda was strictly limited to the territory of Asia, but after the year 2000, the parasite began to spread rapidly through Europe. The first autochthonous infections of dogs and foxes in Slovakia were recorded in 2016. In the present

Rickettsia species in fleas collected from small mammals in Slovakia.

Epidemiological and epizootiological studies of Rickettsia felis and other Rickettsia spp. are very important, because their natural cycle has not yet been established completely. In total, 315 fleas (Siphonaptera) of 11 species of Ceratophyllidae, Hystrichopsyllidae and Leptopsyllidae families were tested for the presence of Rickettsia species and Coxiella burnetii with conventional and specific quantitative real-time PCR assays. Fleas were collected from five rodent hosts (Myodes glareolus, Apodemus flavicollis, Apodemus agrarius, Microtus subterraneus, Microtus arvalis) and three shrew spec

Serological evidence of Hantaan virus in Slovakia during 1989-1991.

Nephropathia epidemica was supposed to be an European form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). However, in 1989-1991 we found serological evidence of infection with Hantaan virus in patients' sera from Slovakia. Higher titers of antibodies against Hantaan virus were detected in sera of 6 out of 75 patients with febrile disease, renal failure and clinical diagnosis of HFRS. The higher titers of antibodies against Puumala virus were detected in sera of 6 out of 75 patients. Serologic differentiation between Hantaan and Puumala infection in patients was based on the detection of hig

Sheep milk-borne epidemic of tick-borne encephalitis in Slovakia.

A study of an outbreak of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in a natural focus of this infection at ZAvada village (Slovakia) led to the conclusion that apparently the epidemic was caused by consumption of fresh sheep cheese and infection of persons occurred by the alimentary route. To our knowledge, this is the first record of this source of infection in man.

The new role of abortion in the context of low fertility in Czechia and Slovakia.

This study examines how the role of abortion has evolved in the context of low fertility and delayed childbearing, with a focus on Czechia and Slovakia-two countries that experienced both high abortion rates and a demographic shift toward later motherhood since the 1990s. Using demographic data and survey analysis, it investigates the interplay between abortion, fertility, and contraceptive use under changing reproductive regimes. The analysis is structured around three objectives: (1) to assess long-term changes in the intensity and structure of induced and spontaneous abortions since 1993; (

Contribution to Charophyceae knowledge in Slovakia - re-discovery of Nitella gracilis.

BACKGROUND: Nitella gracilis (Charophyceae) is a rare charophyte, previously considered regionally extinct in Slovakia. During a systematic survey of charophytes conducted between 2021 and 2025, new localities of this species were discovered. These findings represent the first confirmed records of the species in Slovakia in more than 45 years. The results highlight the importance of small temporary waterbodies such as forest road puddles for the conservation of charophytes. NEW INFORMATION: We found Nitella gracilis in two localities. The first locality was found in a forest pool in the Krupi

Radiocarbon activity of gases in urban surface air in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Carbon-containing gases in the atmosphere are important for the study of carbon cycle dynamics and anthropogenic influence on these environmental processes. Radiocarbon analysis is an excellent tool for studying sources of these gases and their variations. Carbon dioxide is the most abundant and most important of these gases and this study presents results of radiocarbon measurements of carbon dioxide samples collected at the campus of Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia from 1967 to 2025. This record of radiocarbon activity is characterized by decreasing intensity of anthropogenic eff
