Pulmonary dysfunction in cocaine smokers.

The authors report another complication of freebase cocaine smoking. They found a significant reduction in the carbon monoxide diffusing capacity in the lungs of two patients. This suggests that inhalation of the freebase of cocaine may damage the pulmonary gas exchange surface.

Comparative evaluation of salivary hepatocyte growth factor in smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis.

AIM: Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a multifunctional cytokine with a wide range of actions, and plays a role in periodontal disease (PD) progression. Smoking significantly increases the risk for PD progression. Thus, aim of the present study was to estimate salivary HGF levels of non-smokers and smokers with chronic periodontitis (CP) and to compare its levels before and after therapy. METHODS: A total of 75 participants were recruited and divided into three groups: group 1 included 25 healthy participants, group 2 included 25 non-smokers with CP, and group 3 included 25 smokers with CP.

Genes associated with MUC5AC expression in small airway epithelium of human smokers and non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Mucus hypersecretion contributes to the morbidity and mortality of smoking-related lung diseases, especially chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which starts in the small airways. Despite progress in animal studies, the genes and their expression pattern involved in mucus production and secretion in human airway epithelium are not well understood. We hypothesized that comparison of the transcriptomes of the small airway epithelium of individuals that express high vs low levels of MUC5AC, the major macromolecular component of airway mucus, could be used as a probe to ident

Polymorphonuclear leukocyte random migration and chemotaxis in psoriatic and healthy adult smokers and non-smokers.

Random migration and chemotactic responsiveness of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) from psoriatic and control smokers and non-smokers were studied in vitro and in vivo. In vivo, but not in vitro, PMNs from psoriatic smokers responded to a significantly greater degree to a standard chemotaxin than did PMNs from psoriatic non-smokers, control smokers and control non-smokers. This suggests that smoking has a selective effect on psoriatic PMNs. The possible relevance of this to the pathogenesis of psoriasis vulgaris and to palmoplantar pustulosis is discussed.

Physical and mental health status of former smokers and non-smokers patients with bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Up to 70% individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) are lifetime tobacco smokers, a major modifiable risk factor for morbidity. However, quitting smoking is rarely proposed to individuals with BD, mainly because of fear of unfavorable metabolic or psychiatric changes. Evaluating the physical and mental impact of tobacco cessation is primordial. The aim of this study was to characterize the psychiatric and nonpsychiatric correlates of tobacco smoking status (never- vs. current vs. former smokers) in individuals with BD. METHODS: 3860 individuals with ascertained BD recruited in the ne

Expression of tight junction proteins in smokers and non-smokers with generalized Stage III periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), occludin (Occ), and tricellulin (Tric) in periodontitis, as well as their alterations due to smoking. BACKGROUND: Tight junctions (TJ), which consist of transmembrane and cytoplasmic scaffolding proteins, connect the epithelial cells of the periodontium. Occ, claudins, junctional adhesion molecules, and Tric are transmembrane TJ proteins found at the cell membrane. The transmembrane TJ proteins and the intracellular cytoskeleton are directly linked b

Salivary-soluble CD44 levels in smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is the most important environmental risk factor for periodontal disease. Elevated levels of serum-soluble CD44 (sCD44) have been detected in smokers and also have been recognized as a diagnostic marker in some smoking-induced diseases. The present study investigates the salivary sCD44 profiles of smokers and non-smokers with and without chronic periodontitis in response to scaling and root planing (SRP). METHODS: The study included 44 subjects divided into two groups: 22 patients with chronic periodontitis and 22 periodontally healthy subjects. Both groups were equally sub

Bronchial mucosal dendritic cells in smokers and ex-smokers with COPD: an electron microscopic study.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial mucosal dendritic cells (DCs) initiate and regulate immune responses to inhaled antigens, viruses and bacteria. Currently, little is known of their numbers in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While reductions in their numbers have been reported recently in smokers with asthma, nothing is known of the effects of cigarette smoking on bronchial DCs in COPD. The present study compares DC numbers in smokers and ex-smokers with COPD. METHODS: Endobronchial biopsies were obtained from 15 patients with moderate to severe COPD (10 current smokers with m

Bronchus associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) in human lung: its distribution in smokers and non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Bronchus associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) is a normal component of the lung's immune system in many animals and may be analogous to gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). This study aimed at assessing the nature and extent of BALT in human lung and determining whether its expression is induced within the human airway in response to smoking. METHODS: Paraffin embedded, formalin fixed full thickness bronchial wall sections were examined from 31 whole lung specimens derived from both smokers and non-smokers. Samples were taken from throughout the bronchial tree to include main stem

Staying a smoker or becoming an ex-smoker after hospitalisation for unstable angina or myocardial infarction.

The aim of our study was to better understand processes of ongoing smoking or smoking cessation (quitting) following hospitalisation for myocardial infarction or unstable angina (acute cardiac syndromes). In-depth interviews were used to elicit participants' stories about ongoing smoking and quitting. In total, 18 interviews with smokers and 14 interviews with ex-smokers were analysed. Our findings illustrate the complex social nature of smoking practices including cessation. We found that smoking cessation following hospitalisation for acute cardiac syndromes is to some extent a performative

The analysis of protein-bound thiocyanate in plasma of smokers and non-smokers as a marker of cyanide exposure.

When cyanide is introduced into the body, it quickly transforms through a variety of chemical reactions, normally involving sulfur donors, to form more stable chemical species. Depending on the nature of the sulfur donor, cyanide may be transformed into free thiocyanate, the major metabolite of cyanide transformation, 2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid or protein-bound thiocyanate (PB-SCN) adducts. Because protein adducts are generally stable in biological systems, it has been suggested that PB-SCN may have distinct advantages as a marker of cyanide exposure. In this study, plasma was anal

Quantitative assessment of elemental carbon in the lungs of never smokers, cigarette smokers, and coal miners.

Inhalation exposure to particulates such as cigarette smoke and coal dust is known to contribute to the development of chronic lung disease. The purpose of this study was to estimate the amount of elemental carbon (EC) deposits from autopsied lung samples from cigarette smokers, miners, and control subjects and explore the relationship between EC level, exposure history, and the extent of chronic lung disease. The samples comprised three subgroups representing never smokers (8), chronic cigarette smokers (26), and coal miners (6). Following the dissolution of lung tissue, the extracted EC resi

An electronic nose in the discrimination of breath from smokers and non-smokers: a model for toxin exposure.

Exhaled breath contains hundreds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may be used as non-invasive markers of lung disease. Electronic noses (e-noses) can analyse VOCs by composite nanosensor arrays with learning algorithms. This study investigated the use of an e-nose (Cyranose C320) to distinguish the breath of smokers from that of non-smokers. Smoking and non-smoking subjects exhaled from total lung capacity into a 2 L Tedlar bag and these samples were introduced offline to the e-nose in a random order. Two classes of breath, 'smoker' and 'non-smoker', were established and this model wa

Respiratory decline in smokers and ex-smokers--an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and death.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although smoking is associated with an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease and death, many smokers remain healthy after many years of smoking. Our objective was to assess whether this variation is related to rate of decline of respiratory function. DESIGN: This was a population-based cohort study, its subjects being men born in 1914 from Malmö, Sweden. METHODS: All 291 smokers who since the baseline examination in 1969 had remained in Malmö were invited to a follow-up examination in 1982. Of the 242 participants, 199 men without history of myocardial infar

The effects of local anesthetic containing adrenaline on gingival blood flow in smokers and non-smokers.

Recent evidence suggests that fundamental differences exist in the development of gingival and periodontal diseases in smokers versus non-smokers. In part, these differences may be attributable to smoking-induced differences in the vascular dynamics of the periodontium. This study monitored gingival blood flow when challenged by a local anesthetic-containing adrenaline in 20 smokers and 20 non-smokers using laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF). The dosage of local anesthetic used (0.5 ml lignocaine hydrochloride 2% with adrenaline 1:80,000) was calculated after establishing a dose-response curve (DRC
