BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is known to increase the risk of chronic disease. Improved understanding of factors that contribute to smoking initiation and cessation may help to underpin strategies that lead to smoking behavior change.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data obtained from 11,967 men and women, aged 20-65 years, were used to study associations with smoking initiation and smoking cessation within the general population. Information on smoking habits, socio-demographic factors and psychosocial factors were collected through self-administered questionnaires. Multiple logistic regression an

OBJECTIVE: For women of fertile age, an adequate supply of folate is important for preventing a range of health problems, especially congenital malformations in their offspring. Since congenital deformities are more common in children of mothers who smoke, the objective was to analyse the folate status of smokers, passive smokers and non-smokers.
METHODS: Folate intake was monitored in 319 women aged 18-35 (112 smokers, 100 passive smokers and 107 non-smokers) using a three day food record. Serum and erythrocyte folate concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay. Exposure to tobacco smok

A case-control study involving 242 women with histologically confirmed lung cancer and 352 healthy controls, was conducted in Cracow, Poland between 1991 and 1997. Subjects were interviewed about their exposure to smoking, passive smoking and other suspected risk factors, according to a structured questionnaire. Multivariate analysis has shown that cigarette smoking was the most strongly active risk factor in female lung cancer. The strongest influence of this factor was observed with reference to small cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It has also been observed that passive smoking

Smoking is the main modifiable cause of disease and death in the developed world. Tobacco consumption is directly linked to cardiovascular disease, chronic bronchitis, and many malignant diseases. Tobacco also has many cutaneous effects, most of which are harmful. Smoking is closely associated with several dermatologic diseases such as psoriasis, pustulosis palmoplantaris, hidrosadenitis suppurativa, and systemic and discoid lupus erythematosus, as well as cancers such as those of the lip, oral cavity, and anogenital region. A more debatable relationship exists with melanoma, squamous cell car

UNLABELLED: SYSTEMIC AND LOCAL EFFECT: Smoke inhalation causes systemic and local, mainly respiratory, toxicity due to the asphyxiant and irritant properties of toxic gases.
OXYGEN DEPRIVATION AND INTOXICATION: The syndrome of oxygen deprivation and intoxication by asphyxiant gases is caused by combustion-induced oxygen deprivation and exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) and cyanide (CN), but also to other toxic gases. A loss of consciousness is a good sign of systemic toxicity; however, the respective role of CO, CN and other toxic gases cannot be determined. The presence of apnea, lactic acido

BACKGROUND: The data concerning the association of smoking and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are limited. The effects of cigarette smoking on OSA still remain obscure.
OBJECTIVES: To reveal the impact of smoking on obstructive sleep apnea.
METHODS: About 384 patients with the diagnosis of OSA through full night polysomnographic (PSG) examination were included to the study. The demographic data (age, sex and BMI), complaints and medical history, status of smoking as non-smokers and smokers, smoking frequency (cigarettes/day), polysomnograhic data comprising apnea hypopnea index (AHI), non-REM

BACKGROUND: Individuals who are unsheltered or experiencing homelessness are more likely to smoke than those in the general population and have a higher prevalence of tobacco-related illnesses. Those who are unhoused make quit attempts at rates similar to the general population, however rates of successful quitting are much lower. Women bear a higher burden of smoking-related diseases and are less successful in their cessation efforts than men. Despite these increased risks and challenges, cessation programs specifically designed to meet the needs of women experiencing homelessness are extreme

This study used ecological momentary assessment data from adult daily smokers attempting to quit smoking to assess relations between exposure to contextual risk factors and cessation failure, latency to a first smoking lapse, or progression from lapse to relapse (smoking 7 days in a row). Participants were adult, daily smokers enrolled in a randomized controlled clinical trial of bupropion SR and individual counseling who were followed to 1 year postquit. Participants reported exposure to high-risk contexts and behaviors, including being where cigarettes were available or smoking was permitted

BACKGROUND: The experienced smoker maintains adequate nicotine levels by 'puff-by-puff self-control' which also avoids symptomatic nauseating effects of nicotine overdose. It is postulated that there is a varying 'dynamic threshold for nausea' into which motion sickness susceptibility provides an objective toxin-free probe. Hypotheses were that: (i) nicotine promotes motion sickness whereas deprivation protects; and (ii) pleasurable effects of nicotine protect against motion sickness whereas adverse effects of withdrawal have the opposite effect.
METHODS: Twenty-six healthy habitual cigarette

Based on an extensive review of specialized literature about woman smoking, this essay aims to promote a better understanding of this issue, proposing the adoption of Social Sciences concepts, particularly at gender category, to support more comprehensive and encompassing approaches towards prevention and health assistance of tobacco smoking women. Analyzing the epidemiologic scenario of woman smoking, three tendencies could be identified--pauperization, feminilization and juvenilization--confirming that many of women disease are related to social and gender inequalities. Gender dimension is a

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to investigate the local peptidergic innervation of diseased and healthy periodontia in smokers and non-smokers.
METHODS: Fifteen smokers and 12 non-smokers, all with localized chronic periodontitis, participated in the study. Periodontally diseased and healthy tooth sites were selected in smokers (groups 1 and 2, respectively) and non-smokers (groups 3 and 4, respectively). Local peptidergic innervation was assessed by the concentrations of two neuropeptides, substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), in the gingival biopsies obtained fro

BACKGROUND: Smoking is a major risk factor for the development and progression of chronic periodontitis (CP). Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) derived from these patients contains many proteins that could serve as important diagnostic indicators. A protein chip technology called Surface Enhanced Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) has recently been developed to facilitate protein profiling of complex biological mixtures. The hypothesis to be tested was SELDI-TOF-MS could distinguish between GCF of CP patients by smoking status and pocket depth.

Although most smokers in our society report that they would like to quit, smoking prevalence rates have remained relatively unchanged during most of the 1990s. This is in contrast to a nearly 50% reduction in prevalence observed over the past 3 decades. Presently, an estimated 25.5% of adults (48 million people) continue to smoke, although most smokers would like to quit. Recent research on the treatment of nicotine dependence has focused primarily on events that occur after the initial cessation period (i.e., the prevention of relapse with behavioral counseling and/or the management of withdr

Urine from 32 road tanker drivers handling petrol, diesel, paraffin and white spirit was tested in the Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity system using tester strains TA98 anbd TA100. Urine samples were collected before and after tanking and were concentrated 250-fold on XAD-2 columns before testing. Controls were 33 office employees from the same plant. No effect on urinary mutagenicity of occupational exposure to petroleum products was found. Significant differences in mutagenic effect were demonstrated between smokers and non-smokers. Methodological experiments demonstrated a dose/response ef

BACKGROUND: The majority of Norwegians who use e-cigarettes are adults who have smoked. Little is known about vaping reasons and -patterns in this group. The aim of this paper was to study vaping prevalence, patterns, and motivations among adults who smoke. Furthermore, to investigate smoking intensity and smoking cessation behaviour differences between those who vape and those who do not.
METHODS: This study was based on two separate Norwegian samples: People who had ever smoked, from 2017 (N = 2099), and people who currently smoked and recent quitters, from 2018/2019 (N = 1336). Measures of

ObjectiveTo examine whether policies prohibiting smoking on college campuses contribute to greater decreases in smoking. Participants: This study compares smoking prevalence and perceptions of prevalence pre/post a smoking ban enacted in 2015 by using repeated cross-sectional surveys administered at a university in 2011 (n = 1.548), 2013 (n = 3.657), 2015 (n = 3.456), 2016 (n = 2.575), and 2018 (n = 4.600). Methods: Regression models evaluated trends in prevalence with a spline term to evaluate differences after the smoking ban. Results: Before the ban, the prevalence of any past 30-day smokin
