Factors associated with study attrition in a pilot randomised controlled trial to explore the role of exercise-assisted reduction to stop (EARS) smoking in disadvantaged groups.

BACKGROUND: Study attrition has the potential to compromise a trial's internal and external validity. The aim of the present study was to identify factors associated with participant attrition in a pilot trial of the effectiveness of a novel behavioural support intervention focused on increasing physical activity to reduce smoking, to inform the methods to reduce attrition in a definitive trial. METHODS: Disadvantaged smokers who wanted to reduce but not quit were randomised (N = 99), of whom 61 (62 %) completed follow-up assessments at 16 weeks. Univariable logistic regression was conducted

Gains in life expectancy in the Australian population due to reductions in smoking: comparisons between interventions targeting the population versus interventions in a specific high risk group.

BACKGROUND: Four decades of population-based tobacco control strategies have contributed to substantial reduction in smoking prevalence in Australia. However, smoking prevalence is still double in socially disadvantaged groups compared to those that are not. But not all tobacco control strategies successfully used in the general population is effective in specific high-risk population groups. Hence, an effective way to reduce smoking in high risk population groups may include targeting them specifically to identify and support smokers to quit. In this backdrop, we examined whether tobacco cont

Dietary supplementation with a wild green oat extract (Avena sativa L.) to improve wellness and wellbeing during smoking reduction or cessation: a randomized double-blind controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: Smoking reduction or cessation are critical public health goals, given the well-documented risks of tobacco use to health. Reducing smoking frequency and cessation entirely are challenging due to nicotine addiction and withdrawal symptoms, which can significantly affect mental wellness and overall wellbeing. Previous research has suggested that certain dietary supplements may support smoking cessation and reduction efforts by mitigating these adverse effects. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of supplementation with 900 mg/day of Neuravena®, a green oat extract (G

Providing an e-cigarette starter kit for smoking cessation and reduction as adjunct to usual care to smokers with a mental health condition: findings from the ESCAPE feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Smoking rates in the UK have declined steadily over the past decades, masking considerable inequalities, as little change has been observed among people with a mental health condition. This trial sought to assess the feasibility and acceptability of supplying an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) starter kit for smoking cessation as an adjunct to usual care for smoking cessation, to smokers with a mental health condition treated in the community, to inform a future effectiveness trial. METHODS: This randomised controlled feasibility trial, conducted March-December 2022, compared t

Sidestream Smoke Extracts from Harm-Reduction and Conventional Camel Cigarettes Inhibit Osteogenic Differentiation via Oxidative Stress and Differential Activation of intrinsic Apoptotic Pathways.

Epidemiological studies suggest cigarette smoking as a probable environmental factor for a variety of congenital anomalies, including low bone mass, increased fracture risk and poor skeletal health. Human and animal in vitro models have confirmed hypomineralization of differentiating cell lines with sidestream smoke being more harmful to developing cells than mainstream smoke. Furthermore, first reports are emerging to suggest a differential impact of conventional versus harm-reduction tobacco products on bone tissue as it develops in the embryo or in vitro. To gather first insight into the mo

Combination bupropion-zonisamide facilitates rapid reduction in smoke exposure and prevents weight gain during switching to electronic nicotine delivery systems: A randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: A pilot study suggested that the combination of bupropion (BUP) and zonisamide (ZON) could facilitate smoking reduction during switching to an electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS). This randomized controlled trial tested the hypothesis that BUP/ZON would produce greater smoking reduction than BUP alone or placebo (PLAC). METHODS: Adults who smoked cigarettes, but were not seeking cessation treatment, were asked to switch to ENDS provided during study Weeks 1-12. Participants were randomized to receive BUP/ZON, BUP, or PLAC (N = 60 per group) during Weeks 2-8. Assessments i

Smoking, Obesity, and Disability Benefits or Litigation Are Not Associated with Clinically Important Reductions in Physical Functioning After Intramedullary Nailing of Tibial Shaft Fractures: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Forty percent of long bone fractures involve the tibia. These fractures are associated with prolonged recovery and may adversely affect patients' long-term physical functioning; however, there is limited evidence to inform what factors influence functional recovery in this patient population. QUESTION/PURPOSE: In a secondary analysis of a previous randomized trial, we asked: What fracture-related, demographic, social, or rehabilitative factors were associated with physical function 1 year after reamed intramedullary nailing of open or closed tibial shaft fractures? METHODS: This

Predictors of cigarette discontinuation and reduction among adults never planning to quit smoking: Longitudinal findings from the U.S. Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, 2014/15-2021.

INTRODUCTION: E-cigarettes have increased in use prevalence among adults who smoke cigarettes. However, the population-based literature on e-cigarette use and smoking cessation largely still focuses on those planning or attempting to quit smoking. We evaluated predictors of cigarette discontinuation or reduction among adults not planning to ever quit smoking. METHODS: We conducted secondary data analyses using the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study (2014-2021; Waves 2-6) cohort data collected in the United States. Open Reduction and Treatment with Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 for Correction of Closed Tibial Pseudoarthrosis in a 32-Year-Old Non-smoking Male with Osteoporosis and Hypogonadism: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) is an osteoinductive growth factor approved for use in interbody spinal fusion and open tibial shaft fractures. Reports of its off-label application exist, but there is limited documentation regarding its use in closed tibial pseudoarthrosis. This case is notable as one of the first to describe the successful use of BMP-2 in a young male with osteoporosis and hypogonadism, conditions that further complicate fracture healing. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old non-smoking Caucasian male sustained a Gustilo-Anderson grade 1 open fracture of the left ti

Reduction and Growth Inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes by Use of Anti-Listerial Nisin, P100 Phages and Buffered Dry Vinegar Fermentates in Standard and Sodium-Reduced Cold-Smoked Salmon.

Cold-smoked salmon are ready-to-eat products that may support the growth of pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes during their long shelf-life. Consumption of such contaminated products can cause fatal listeriosis infections. Another challenge and potential risk associated with CS salmon is their high levels of sodium salt. Excess dietary intake is associated with serious health complications. In the present study, anti-listerial bacteriocin (nisin), P100 bacteriophages (Phageguard L, PGL) and fermentates (Verdad N6, P-NDV) were evaluated as commercial bio-preservation strategies for increased con

Oxidation of cathepsin S by major chemicals of cigarette smoke.

Lung cysteine cathepsin S (CatS) that is a potent elastase plays a deleterious role in alveolar remodeling during smoke-induced emphysema. Despite the presence of a reactive nucleophilic cysteine (Cys25) within its active site, most of its elastinolytic activity is preserved after exposure to cigarette smoke extract (CSE), a major source of sulfhydryl oxidants. This result led us to decipher CatS resistance to major and representative CSE oxidants: hydrogen peroxide, formaldehyde, acrolein and peroxynitrite. CatS was inactivated by hydrogen peroxide, peroxynitrite and acrolein in a time- and d

A report from the 106th International Conference of the American Thoracic Society (May 14-19, 2010 - New Orleans, Louisiana, USA).

Flowing oil covered the Gulf like a blanket, but while no attempts so far had been effective at controlling the oil spill, treatments that do work to improve symptoms, prevent disability and offer an improved quality of life were discussed during the meeting on respiratory tract diseases. Within the same context of pollution by human activity, it is interesting to know that retreatment with anacardic acids reduced lung inflammation upon exposure to diesel exhaust particles in experimental animals (Carvalho, A.L.N. et al., A1729), suggesting ways to improve human health. Along with pollution, w

An update on controversies in e-cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) which mimic tobacco smoking without the combustion of tobacco. These devices have been misleadingly marketed as "less harmful" alternatives to conventional smoking tobacco products. The e-liquid in e-cigarettes include nicotine, a humectant and other additives including flavourings, colourants, or adulterants such as bacterial and fungal products. In this review, we discuss the contrasting views of the tobacco lobby and most professional societies. We describe the epidemiology of the use of these devices, with a widespread and signif
