Ellobiid snail loss in seawall-fronted mangroves.

Seawalls are widely constructed to protect coastal communities and infrastructure against storm surges and tidal flooding; however, they often exert significant ecological pressure on adjacent wetland ecosystems. Understanding these impacts is critical for sustainable coastal management, particularly in the context of intensifying coastal squeeze. In this study, we investigated the effects of seawall construction on benthic mollusk communities within subtropical mangrove wetlands by comparing assemblages in mangroves fronting seawalls with those in adjacent, undisturbed natural mangroves. The

Freshwater snail-borne parasitic diseases in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Freshwater snails are the first obligatory intermediate hosts in the trematode life cycle. Several parasitic diseases transmitted by these snails are endemic in Africa, and their distribution closely follows that of the intermediate hosts. These diseases represent a major public health problem and cause significant socio-economic losses in Africa, particularly schistosomiasis and fascioliasis. In this review, we will describe the main roles of freshwater snails in the life cycle of trematode parasites, and the geographical distribution of these diseases in Africa. We will also disc

Cercarial dermatitis transmitted by exotic marine snail.

Cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch) is caused by the penetration of human skin by cercariae of schistosome parasites that develop in and are released from snail hosts. Cercarial dermatitis is frequently acquired in freshwater habitats, and less commonly in marine or estuarine waters. To investigate reports of a dermatitis outbreak in San Francisco Bay, California, we surveyed local snails for schistosome infections during 2005-2008. We found schistosomes only in Haminoea japonica, an Asian snail first reported in San Francisco Bay in 1999. Genetic markers place this schistosome within a larg

Second messengers of octopamine receptors in the snail Lymnaea.

We describe octopamine responses of 3 large buccal neurons of Lymnaea and test the hypothesis that these are cAMP-dependent. The B1 neuron is excited by octopamine and the depolarisation is significantly enlarged (P < 0.05) by application of the blocker of cAMP breakdown, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX). The B1 neuron is also depolarised by forskolin, an activator of adenylyl cyclase. The B2 and B3 neurons are inhibited by octopamine, and the response is not affected by IBMX. Both cells are excited by forskolin. We conclude that the B1 neuron response to octopamine is likely to be mediated

Morphology of interneurons in the procerebrum of the snail Helix aspersa.

Terrestrial snails have a highly developed sense of olfaction. Because the procerebrum has a large number of cells and is located at the entry site of the olfactory nerve into the brain, the structure is thought to have a significant role in the processing of olfactory stimuli. The morphology of the procerebral neurons in the snail Helix aspersa was investigated through intracellular injections of biocytin. No formal categorization of neuronal types was possible, but some cells were seen to have neurites entirely intrinsic to the procerebrum, whereas others had both intrinsic and extrinsic arb

Morphology and odor sensitivity of regenerated snail tentacles.

This study examined certain structural and functional aspects of the olfactory system in regenerated posterior tentacles of the terrestrial snail Achatina fulica. Regeneration of the epithelial sensory pad occurs with accurate size regulation. All five neuronal cell types which are normally revealed by horseradish peroxidase backfilling are also regenerated. The sensory cells attain normal numbers at about 20 weeks postlesion. The organization of neuronal elements within the tentacle is chaotic, however, at early stages of regeneration. Even later, the digitlike extensions of the ganglion, whi

Population Genetics of Oncomelania hupensis Snails from New-Emerging Snail Habitats in a Currently Schistosoma japonicum Non-Endemic Area.

Schistosomiasis is still one of the most significant neglected tropical diseases worldwide, and China is endemic for Schistosoma japonicum. With its great achievement in schistosomiasis control, the government of China has set the goal to eliminate the parasitic disease at the country level by 2030. However, one major challenge is the remaining huge areas of habitats for the intermediate host Oncomelania hupensis. This is further exacerbated by an increasing number of new emerging snail habitats reported each year. Therefore, population genetics on snails in such areas will be useful in evalua

Directional disparity between oysters and mud snails in modulating marine carbon sequestration.

Amplified greenhouse effects underscore the importance of coastal shellfish to uptake and sequester atmospheric CO2 via the biological carbon pump. With continuous allochthonous nutrient input, the filter-feeding oysters enhance the marine carbon sequestration through the biological carbon pump. However, the role of oysters and deposit-feeding gastropod-mud snails without sustained nutrient input remains unclear. This study employed mesocosms to simulate coastal ecosystems for oysters and mud snails, elucidating their disparity on the marine carbon sequestration without allochthonous nutrient

MOLECULAR GENETICS UNVEIL HOST SPECIFICITY OF TREMATODES IN TWO COGENERIC BATILLARIA SNAILS.

Host specificity is essential to understanding the ecology and evolution of parasites, and it is often complicated to estimate because of the presence of morphologically similar but genetically distinct species. Morphological identification of larval trematodes is often challenging because of the lack of diagnostic characteristics that only appear in the sexually mature adult stage. The difficulty in accurate species identification may obscure their compatibility with the host species. We investigate the parasites infecting 2 Asian mud snail species, Batillaria multiformis and Batillaria attra

Species-specific detection of Schistosoma japonicum using the 'SNAILS' DNA-based biosensor.

The neglected tropical disease schistosomiasis continues to be a global health concern, especially in low- and middle-income countries, with at least 250 million people infected worldwide and a further 779 million at risk of infection. Schistosoma japonicum, which is found in parts of South Asia, causes intestinal schistosomiasis in humans, as well as infecting up to forty other mammalian species. Therefore, novel diagnostics that can detect S. japonicum are desirable. In this study, we have further developed and refined the 'SNAILS' DNA-based biosensor technology for the detection of schistos

Diversity of trematode cercariae among naturally infected lymnaeid snails from Phayao, Thailand.

Lymnaeids are aquatic snails playing an important role in the transmission of many parasitic trematode species of veterinary and medical importance. In this study, we assessed the presence of cercarial flukes in naturally infected lymnaeid snails from Phayao province, Thailand, and determined the species diversity of both the intermediate snail hosts and parasite larvae. A total of 3,185 lymnaeid snails were collected from paddy fields at 31 sites in eight districts of Phayao province between October 2021 and December 2022. Larval fluke infection was assessed using the cercarial shedding metho

Combined Proteotranscriptomic-Based Strategy to Discover Novel Antimicrobial Peptides from Cone Snails.

Despite their impressive diversity and already broad therapeutic applications, cone snail venoms have received less attention as a natural source in the investigation of antimicrobial peptides than other venomous animals such as scorpions, spiders, or snakes. Cone snails are among the largest genera (Conus sp.) of marine invertebrates, with more than seven hundred species described to date. These predatory mollusks use their sophisticated venom apparatus to capture prey or defend themselves. In-depth studies of these venoms have unraveled many biologically active peptides with pharmacological

How do snails meet fish? Landscape perspective needed to study parasite prevalence.

We echo the viewpoints presented in the recent editorials and forums in ecohealth in 2009 and 2010 that understanding the links between water and health using biogeography can provide insights into the patterns of and the processes that give rise to the distribution of disease prevalence. In particular, we underscore the need to integrate disease ecology and biogeography using landscape ecological approaches. We use opisthorchiasis, a major public health problem in Southeast Asia, to illustrate our opinions.

Mixed strain schistosome infections of snails and the evolution of parasite virulence.

Mathematical models often propose that within-host competition between parasites can be a major factor in the evolution of increased parasite virulence. Kin selection predicts that as the coefficient of relatedness between infecting parasites decreases, the benefits of competition to individual genotypes increases. Thus where parasites can adjust their behaviour in response to current conditions, higher virulence is predicted in multiple genotype infections. There is limited experimental data, however, regarding the effects of mixed strain infections on host and parasite fitness. We investigat
