Hemorrhagic Stroke Revealing a Snake Bite: A Case Report.

In Morocco, envenomations caused by viper bites and scorpion stings are frequent and associated with high lethality. It occurs mainly during the summer season with a peak between June and August. Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation due to Venomous Snake Bite.

Snake bites are common all around the world with a great prevalence in South Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Although they are associated with common complications such as local swelling, bleeding at site of bite, coagulopathy, etc., few rare cardiac complications such as myocardial infarctions and arrhythmias have also been described in literature. The following is a case report of a patient who had a snake bite with a Russell's viper which resulted in atrial fibrillation, which resolved on treatment with anti snake venom.

The North-South divide in snake bite envenomation in India.

Snake bite envenomations are common in rural areas and the incidence peaks during monsoons in India. Prominent venomous species have been traditionally labeled as the 'big four' that includes Cobra, Krait, Russel's viper and Saw scaled viper. Systematic attempts for identification and classification of prevalent snakes in various states of India are missing till now and there is no concrete data on this aspect. The published literature however shows that some species of snakes are more prevalent in a particular region than the other parts of India e.g. Saw scaled vipers in Rajasthan. We review

[Snake bite in a 53-year-old female tourist].

Snake bites are rare events in Germany and are not life-threatening with usually only mild clinical symptoms. The most widespread venomous snake is the common European adder (Vipera berus). Here we present the case of a 53-year-old woman who was bitten by a common adder. Although the patient was initially in stable condition she developed edematous swelling of the complete lower limb, subcutaneous bleeding, and rhabdomyolysis. The aim of this report is to raise awareness that even in a central European country like Germany snake bites with a life-threatening course can occur and need immediate

British Military snake-bite guidelines: pressure immobilisation.

Snake-bite is a significant problem worldwide. Despite frequent deployments and exercises to countries where venomous snakes are endemic there are few reported cases of British Army personnel being bitten. Clinical Guidelines for Operations includes direction on the treatment of snakebite, including the application of pressure immobilisation. This article reviews the history and development of pressure immobilisation, the optimum equipment and the efficacy of training in order to inform future guidelines. It is the conclusion of this review that pressure immobilisation should be advocated in a

Emergency treatment of a snake bite: Pearls from literature.

Snake bite is a well-known occupational hazard amongst farmers, plantation workers, and other outdoor workers and results in much morbidity and mortality throughout the world. This occupational hazard is no more an issue restricted to a particular part of the world; it has become a global issue. Accurate statistics of the incidence of snakebite and its morbidity and mortality throughout the world does not exist; however, it is certain to be higher than what is reported. This is because even today most of the victims initially approach traditional healers for treatment and many are not even reg

Deaths from snake bite in Australia, 1981-1991.

OBJECTIVE: To obtain and analyse data relating to snake bite fatalities in Australia. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of case reports and collation of studies carried out at the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories (CSL). RESULTS: 18 deaths attributed to snake bite were reported to CSL over a 10-year period. Eleven of the victims were males and four of these were bitten after either picking up the snake or playing with it. In most cases, no pathological findings of significance were found at autopsy. Venom was detected in post-mortem samples from nine cases. Brown snakes (genus Pseudonaja) were re

Acute renal failure in children following snake bite.

Snake venom poisoning accounted for 1.4% of 4360 infants and children admitted to a south Indian hospital during the years 1976-1979 and was the commonest cause of acute renal failure encountered. Most of the 42 children with anuria following snake bite had evidence of intravascular coagulation and acute tubular necrosis. Russell's viper was the only snake recognized in all the cases of anuria in which species identification was possible. Renal failure complicating snake bite was relatively more frequent and more severe in children than in adults.

"Fanged to Peril": Interesting Snake Bite Case Series.

Snakebite is an acute life-threatening medical emergency and is included among the neglected tropical diseases in India. The incidence of snakebite mortality is particularly high in Southeast Asia and India has the highest number of cases of snakebites with a mortality of 35,000 to 50,000 cases per year according to the World Health Organization (WHO) direct estimation. There are three families of venomous snakes in Southeast Asia which mainly include Elapidae, Viperidae, and Colubridae. Snakebite victims show varied clinical presentations ranging from local signs to systemic signs of envenoma

Acute Reversible Ischemic Stroke after Snake Bite.

Snake bite is very common in India. Ischemic stroke after snake bite has been described in the literature sparsely. Furthermore, the onset of stroke and its clinical reversibility is a rarity. Here, we present a case of snake bite with ischemic stroke which has clinically reversible outcome.

Acute acalculous cholecystitis: a rare complication of snake bite.

Snake bite is an environmental and occupational hazard in many tropical and subtropical countries. It demands a high level of knowledge and skill in managing the envenomation syndrome. Herein, we describe a rare case of acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) that developed in a 36-year-old man after an Indian cobra (Naja naja) bite in the absence of any other predisposing factors for AAC. The probable mechanisms for the occurrence of AAC have been highlighted. Recognizing the possibility of such a complication after envenomation will definitely aid in early diagnosis and, subsequently, a better

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in a snake bite victim: a case report.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy occurs in patients with severe emotional or physiologic stress. The prognosis is usually favorable, and the left ventricular wall motion dyskinesis normalizes within days to weeks. In this paper we report a case of snake bite complicated by takotsubo cardiomyopathy. We advise physicians to consider not only cardioinhibitory effect of snake venom but also takotsubo cardiomyopathy as a differential diagnosis if the patient develops cardiac dysfunction following snake bite.

A case report of scrotal gangrene from snake bite.

A case of snake bite of the scrotum in a 43-year-old male Fulani farmer cum herdsman is presented. Gangrene of the scrotum developed 4 days after the bite together with an increase in size of the scrotum to about 59cm in circumference. The patient received polyvalent snake anti venom almost 10 hours after the bite. Surgery to excise the gangrenous part, together with multiple longitudinal skin incisions of scrotum and penis were carried out The scrotal size reduced to almost half of the morbid size within 48 hours of surgery.

Snake bite in Australia: first aid and envenomation management.

Australia is inhabited by a large variety of snakes, including some of the most poisonous in the world. Sightings are regular, and the incidence of snake bite is estimated to be several thousand a year. A bite does not necessarily result in envenomation occurring, however there are at least 300 snakebites a year requiring treatment of envenomation, with between 1 and 4 fatalities every year. The incidence of fatalities from snake bite has increased over recent years. The explanation for this is unclear, but possible reasons include the urban sprawl, and a delay in application of appropriate fi

Medical records of 3,139 patients bitten by Bothrops snakes and attended at Vital Brazil Hospital (HVB) from 1981 to 1990 were reviewed. They were more frequent in males (75.7%). In 1,412 cases (45.0%) the snake was classified by species, and 1,376 were B. jararaca, 20 B. jararacussu, 11 B. neuwiedi, 2 B. moojeni, 2 B. alternatus e 1 B. pradoi. The most frequent bitten anatomic regions were: foot (47.5%) and hand (21.3%). Tourniquet was used in 38.2% of the cases and its frequency fell down during the study period (p < 0.05). The clinical features at the bite site were: pain (95.6%), swelling
