Snow skiing combined anterior cruciate ligament/medial collateral ligament disruptions.

Recent reports indicate that combined anterior cruciate ligament/medial collateral ligament (ACL/MCL) knee injuries are usually associated with a lateral meniscus tear. In our center, snow skiing is the athletic activity most frequently associated with this double-ligament injury complex. A sports-specific analysis was undertaken to evaluate the hypothesis that the snow skiing ligament injury is different from similar injuries caused by other athletic activities. Of a total of 64 acute arthroscopically confirmed tears of both the MCL and ACL, 23 were caused by snow skiing and 41 by nonskiing a

Visual Snow Syndrome as a Network Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Aim: By reviewing the existing clinical studies about visual snow (VS) as a symptom or as part of visual snow syndrome (VSS), we aim at improving our understanding of VSS being a network disorder. Background: Patients with VSS suffer from a continuous visual disturbance resembling the view of a badly tuned analog television (i.e., VS) and other visual, as well as non-visual symptoms. These symptoms can persist over years and often strongly impact the quality of life. The exact prevalence is still unknown, but up to 2.2% of the population could be affected. Presently, there is no established tr

Identifying priority landscapes for conservation of snow leopards in Pakistan.

Pakistan's total estimated snow leopard habitat is about 80,000 km2 of which about half is considered prime habitat. However, this preliminary demarcation was not always in close agreement with the actual distribution-the discrepancy may be huge at the local and regional level. Recent technological developments like camera trapping and molecular genetics allow for collecting reliable presence records that could be used to construct realistic species distribution based on empirical data and advanced mathematical approaches like MaxEnt. The current study followed this approach to construct an ac

Radioimmunoassay for detection of the Snow Mountain Agent of viral gastroenteritis.

The Snow Mountain Agent (SMA) is a Norwalk-like viral agent of acute gastroenteritis that has been detected only by immune electron microscopy (IEM). We established a solid phase microtiter radioimmunoassay (RIA) for SMA antigen employing pre-and post-challenge sera from volunteer studies as capture antibodies. SMA was detected in 12 of 67 stool samples from volunteers who were ill after oral challenge with SMA. All samples in which virus particles were detected by IEM were positive by RIA, but the RIA was 10-80 times more sensitive than IEM. To detect serum antibody to SMA, a blocking test wa

Unmasking the noise: aberrant cortical oscillations in visual snow syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Visual snow syndrome (VSS) is characterised by persistent visual static and disabling perceptual disturbances, yet its underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood and are frequently confounded by migraine comorbidity. METHODS: We examined resting-state cortical oscillatory activity in VSS (n = 30) using EEG with distributed source modelling. Absolute and normalised spectral power was quantified across cortical regions, and machine-learning classifiers were trained to identify diagnostic spectral signatures. RESULTS: Relative to healthy controls (HC, n = 47), VSS showed a

Diagnostic and Management Strategies of Visual Snow Syndrome: Current Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS) is characterized by the presence of dynamic, continuous, tiny dots in the entire visual field persisting for more than three months, with at least two associated symptoms- palinopsia, photopsia, photophobia, or nyctalopia. VSS was introduced as perpetual visual disturbance representing TV static, based on early case reports from 1995. Despite its recognition, VSS management remains vague as many cases are refractory to treatment. This literature review aims to provide a summary of all attempted treatments and efficacies to help physicians manage VSS. M

Muscae volitantes: A 19th-century precursor of visual snow syndrome?

PURPOSE: Visual snow syndrome comprises a whole-field static-like visual disturbance, with increased awareness of entopic phenomena, an inability to suppress the 'just seen' and photophobia. Visual snow syndrome is often associated with other problems such as headache, tinnitus, and anxiety. The earliest reported case of a patient experiencing symptoms consistent with visual snow syndrome dates only to 1995. This paper seeks to find patterns of experience in the medical literature of the past that are reminiscent of visual snow syndrome, to challenge the view that it is in any sense a novel di

Symptomatic visual snow in acute ischemic stroke: A case series.

Visual snow is the main symptom of visual snow syndrome, a disorder of predominantly visual disturbances initially described in patients without abnormalities on ancillary investigations. We present a case series of patients with visual snow in the setting of acute ischemic stroke. The first and second patient reported previous episodic visual snow with migraine attacks. The third patient experienced visual snow for the first time during the ischemic stroke. In the first patient, the ischemic stroke affected the right and left precuneus and the right lingual gyrus. In the second patient, the i

Occipital ischaemic stroke after visual snow phenomenon - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Persistent migraine with aura and neuroimaging examinations revealing ischaemia in the contralateral cortex may be associated with migrainous infarction. Despite being a neurological symptom that is distinct from migraine with aura, the visual snow phenomenon may also be associated with cerebral ischaemia. Here we describe a patient who reported short-lasting daily symptoms of visual snow that affected his entire visual field before becoming continuous and left-sided following acute occipital brain ischaemia. CASE REPORT: In February 2017, a 74-year-old retired male was referred t

Altered integration of bodily and visual signals in visual snow syndrome.

BackgroundVisual snow syndrome (VSS) is characterized by persistent visual disturbances and is considered to involve altered sensory integration and salience processing. Neuroimaging studies suggest aberrant attention and salience network integration, yet the real-time interaction between internal bodily signals and external sensory processing remains unclear.MethodsWe conducted a case-control electroencephalogram study in 18 VSS patients and 16 matched controls performing a visual oddball task with standard and deviant stimuli. Characteristics of visual snow syndrome in Japan and its association with migraine.

ObjectiveVisual snow syndrome (VSS) is closely linked to migraine and involves variable visual disturbances. The present study aimed to investigate the associations between VSS and migraine, as well as VSS and anisometropia.MethodsWe studied 148 patients with VSS (54 males and 94 females, mean age 30.0 years) and 157 control participants. The mean and difference between left and right spherical equivalent refractive values, as well as the presence of migraines, were compared in patients with VSS and healthy controls. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the assoc

Is our winter experience safe? Micropollutant risks for artificial snowing.

Artificial snowing is a process that allows ski operators adapt to snow scarcity due to climate change while raising environmental and public health concerns about the role it plays in environmental dissemination of pollutants, but studies addressing this question are still scarce. This study aimed to fill this gap in understanding the role of artificial snowmaking in dissemination of antibiotics, bacterial contaminants, antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and genetic determinants (ARGs) thereof. Technical snow and water used for its production were examined from 11 ski stations located in fou

Head acceleration during impacts on snow: evaluation of a ski helmet.

OBJECTIVES: Current standards require ski helmets to meet acceleration criteria during impacts to a rigid surface, but do not require helmets to be evaluated for head impacts to snow, which is a common cause of traumatic brain injury in skiing and snowboarding. The objective of this study is to measure head linear acceleration during impacts to snow, with and without a ski helmet. METHODS: A portable test bench was developed and used to perform drop test of an instrumented headform onto groomed ski slopes. Impacts were made on the top of the head with and without a helmet, at three speeds (5.

Insights into pathophysiology and treatment of visual snow syndrome: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Visual snow syndrome is a debilitating disorder characterized by tiny flickering dots (like TV static) in the entire visual field and a set of accompanying visual (palinopsia, enhanced entoptic phenomena, photophobia, nyctalopia), nonvisual (e.g. tinnitus) and nonperceptional (e.g. concentration problems, irritability) symptoms. Its pathophysiology is enigmatic and therapy is often frustrating. OBJECTIVES: To summarize our current understanding of pathophysiology and treatment of visual snow syndrome. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed database was performed using the key wor

The Incidence of Snow Blower-Related Injuries to the Hand in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Snow blowers represent a highly preventable and increasingly common mechanism of hand injury. This study examines current safety features and their impact on decreasing the incidence of snow blower-related injuries. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried to look for injuries related to the use of snow throwers or blowers between 2001 and 2016. From all of the injuries related to snow blowers, we collected information on identifying characteristics, location of injury, and type of injury (i.e., avulsion). Chi-squared tests were used for categorical

Evidence of dysfunction in the visual association cortex in visual snow syndrome.

Patients with visual snow syndrome (VS) suffer from a debilitating continuous visual disturbance of unknown mechanism. The present study tested the hypothesis of dysfunctional visual processing using visual evoked potentials. Eighteen patients were compared to age-matched migraineurs (M) and healthy controls (C) using 2-way analysis of variance with group (VS, M, C) and gender as factors. Visual evoked potentials from patients with VS demonstrated increased N145 latency (in milliseconds, VS: 152.7 ± 7.9 vs M: 145.3 ± 9.8 vs C: 145.5 ± 9.4; F = 3.28; p = 0.046) and reduced N75-P100 amplitudes (
