Watching soccer is not associated with an increase in cardiac events.

BACKGROUND: It remains controversial, whether spectators of soccer matches are exposed to an increased risk of cardiac events. In 2006, the Soccer World Cup (SWC) took place in Germany and provided an excellent opportunity to assess the effects of emotional stress on cardiac events in a large cohort of soccer enthusiasts in the region of Bavaria. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Bavarian Council for Statistics and Data Management for the period of SWC (June 9-July 9, 2006) and reference periods (SWCRef; May 1-July 31, 2005; May 1-June 8, 2006 and July 10-31, 2006) for the following diagnose

Proximal hamstring avulsion in a professional soccer player.

Acute hamstring strains are a common athletic injury, which may be treated non-operatively with a satisfactory outcome. A complete proximal hamstring avulsion is a rare and potentially career ending injury to an elite athlete. For these high demand patients, surgical reattachment should be immediately undertaken to shorten return to sport and to improve functional outcome. This report describes the occurrence of a complete avulsion of the proximal hamstrings in a professional footballer during an international match. We highlight the clinical presentation, the appropriate diagnostic investigat

Arthroscopic treatment of glenohumeral instability in soccer goalkeepers.

The aim of this study was to report epidemiologic data and results of arthroscopic treatment of glenohumeral instability in soccer goalkeepers. We included 12 soccer goalkeepers with a mean age of 28.9 years (range 18-45 years) with acute or recurrent traumatic anterior instability who underwent an arthroscopic anatomic capsulolabral repair with bone anchors. Patients who underwent surgery within 4 weeks of the first episode of dislocation were classified as acute instability. The results were evaluated using the Rowe Scale and analyzed according to stability, range of motion and function. The

Match running performance and fitness in youth soccer.

The activity profiles of highly trained young soccer players were examined in relation to age, playing position and physical capacity. Time-motion analyses (global positioning system) were performed on 77 (U13-U18; fullbacks [FB], centre-backs [CB], midfielders [MD], wide midfielders [W], second strikers [2 (nd)S] and strikers [S]) during 42 international club games. Total distance covered (TD) and very high-intensity activities (VHIA; >16.1 km·h (-1)) were computed during 186 entire player-matches. Physical capacity was assessed via field test measures (e. g., peak running speed during an inc

[Hip injuries in professional and amateur soccer goalkeepers].

Soccer goalkeeper often dive to the side loading their hip. Different hip injuries might result. Within the scope of this study the hip injury rate of professional and amateur soccer goalkeepers was investigated. Most often players suffer from contusions and abrasions. Bursitis is reported from professional players, but hardly from amateur players. Generally amateur players are injured more often than professional players. For all players the injury risk during exercise is significantly higher than during a match. The exercise frequency showed a weak link to incidence rate only. For age, gende

Talent identification and women's soccer: an Australian experience.

This study used a quasi-applied research model to identify and develop potentially talented female soccer players. Athletes aged 15-19 years with a background in team ball sports or athletics were targeted for recruitment using advertisements and promotions through various media. Interested athletes attended a 2-day programme of testing, which included assessment of anthropometric, physiological and skill attributes. A combination of factors was used in the final selection of 17 athletes to take part in a 12-month talent development programme. A pre-season programme of five training sessions p

An overview of common soccer injuries. Management and prevention.

The most common injuries in soccer involve the ankle and knee joints, and the muscles and ligaments of the thigh and calf. Rehabilitation to restore strength and endurance after healing is extremely important to prevent a recurrence of the injury, which is much more severe and disabling than the initial injury. Sprains and strains of the hamstring and quadriceps, and injuries to the external and internal structures of the knee joints are frequent and relatively more disabling. Recent progress in the technical aspect of investigative medicine, such as magnetic resonance (MRI) imaging/quantitati

Prevention of soccer injuries. Supervision by doctor and physiotherapist.

To study the efficacy of an injury prevention program in a randomized trial, 12 teams (180 players) in a male senior soccer division were followed up for 6 months. The 12 teams were allocated at random to two groups of six teams, one being given a prophylactic program and the other serving as control. The program was based on previous studies of injury mechanisms. It comprised (1) correction of training, (2) provision of optimum equipment; (3) prophylactic ankle taping; (4) controlled rehabilitation; (5) exclusion of players with grave knee instability; (6) information about the importance of

The frequency of muscle tightness and injuries in soccer players.

One hundred-eighty players in a male, senior soccer division were examined for past injuries, persisting symptoms from past injuries, and muscular tightness in the lower extremities. Soccer players were in general less flexible than a group of nonplayers of the same age (n = 86). No correlation was found between past injuries and existing muscle tightness. Sprains of the lower extremity, especially of knees and ankles, predominated among the injuries. Persistent instability symptoms were common sequels to knee and ankle injuries. It is proposed that intensive care of acute injuries will improv

Upper extremity injuries in high school soccer goalkeepers.

BACKGROUND: Soccer participation continues to grow globally and in the United States, accompanied by an inherent risk of injury. Although most soccer injuries involve the lower extremities, goalkeepers experience disproportionately higher rates of upper extremity (UE) injuries due to position-specific demands. Although this pattern is well described at collegiate and professional levels, data among high school athletes remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To compare prevalence, characteristics, and outcomes of UE injuries between high school soccer goalkeepers and field players, as well as assess gende

Youth Soccer Parents' Attitudes and Perceptions About Concussions.

PURPOSE: Parents are important figures in properly managing youth sport concussions. Although media attention has predominantly centered on concussions in contact/collision sports, evidence suggests that the concussion rate in soccer is comparable to those found in contact/collision sports. Given the high rate of concussions in youth soccer, this study aimed to examine parents of youth soccer athletes' attitudes and perceptions about concussions and associated factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted by surveying parents of youth soccer athletes from the five largest organized

Soccer shin guard reactions: allergic and irritant reactions.

In spite of the worldwide popularity of soccer among youth and the common requirement of the use of protective shin guards, reports of allergy to shin guards is sparse. This is surprising in light of the fact that this equipment is often made of materials that are reported to cause allergies, and that friction and moisture from the use of these shin guards during the sport would seem to predispose soccer players to the development of an allergic response. We present eight patients that presented for evaluation of dermatitis under their shin guards--some of which had allergy to their shin guard

Childhood soccer injuries treated in U.S. emergency departments.

OBJECTIVES: Soccer, an increasingly popular sport among children in the United States, is a common precipitant to injury-related emergency department (ED) visits. The authors estimated the number of children treated in EDs for soccer-related injuries and described the nature of these injuries. METHODS: Data from the 2000 National Electronic Injury Surveillance System All Injury Program were used to estimate the overall number and rate of soccer injuries in children, calculate injury rates per 1,000 children, and describe the body regions affected and types of injuries. Results were stratified

Football/Soccer: A Review of Imaging Findings and Biomechanics.

Football (soccer) is an intensely physical sport with a high prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries. Diagnostic imaging is critical for evaluating and managing these injuries effectively. Football players are particularly prone to injuries involving the lower extremities, especially the knees. Goalkeepers, due to their unique role and use of hands, face a higher risk of upper extremity injuries. Understanding the biomechanics of trauma, such as rapid changes in direction and high-speed running, is essential for anticipating injury patterns. This review article examines the imaging characterist

The aims of this study were to compare the running performance of possession and position games and to describe the external load of the same position game played on pitches of different dimensions. Using a GPS system (WIMU Pro, RealTrack Systems, Almería, Spain), the running demands of 25 professional soccer players were monitored during 18 possession (without a standardized role position) and 18 positional (with a specific role position) games of 9 vs. 9 + 2 floaters. Each format was developed in small (< 60 m2 per payer), medium (60-90 m2 per player) and large (> 90 m2 per player) sizes. Po
