The influence of social adjustment on normative and risky health behaviors in emerging adults with spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the rates of normative and risky health behaviors and the influence of prior and current social adjustment on health risk behaviors in emerging adults with spina bifida (SB). METHOD: These data are part of a larger longitudinal study of youth with SB; at ages 18-19, 50 emerging adults with SB and 60 typically developing (TD) youth participated. Social adjustment was measured at ages 12/13, 14/15, 16/17, and 18/19. Substance use and sexual activity were self-reported by emerging adults. RESULTS: The SB group reported similar frequencies (i.e., number of days in the pr

Environmental factors and social adjustment as predictors of a first psychosis in subjects at ultra high risk.

BACKGROUND: The onset of schizophrenia is associated with genetic, symptomatic, social and environmental risk factors. The aim of the present study was to determine which environmental factors may contribute to a prediction of a first psychotic episode in subjects at Ultra High Risk (UHR) for developing psychosis. METHOD: We included 72 UHR subjects and followed them over a period of 36 months, of whom nineteen (26.4%) made a transition to psychosis. We applied survival analyses to determine associations between a transition to psychosis and environmental factors and social adjustment. To det

Longitudinal analyses of the relationship between unsupportive social interactions and psychological adjustment among women with fertility problems.

This study examined the association of unsupportive social interactions and psychological adjustment among 123 women with fertility problems, and tested whether threat appraisals and avoidance coping mediate this association. Cross-sectional analyses suggested that infertility-specific unsupportive responses received from other people were associated positively with adjustment problems. Avoidance coping and threat appraisals mediated this association between unsupportive social interactions and adjustment. Longitudinal analyses with 67 of these women revealed that after controlling for Time 1

Social Media Engagement and Self-Esteem as Predictors of Adjustment Domains Among Adolescents With Body Dysmorphic Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Social media has influenced the perception of beauty, attraction and body image among adolescents which is significantly regulated by socio-cultural factors. Individuals with low self-confidence and a strong desire for social acceptance tend to seek approval from their environment and become overly concerned with their physical appearance. Adolescents, who are more susceptible to insecurity and adjustment issues, are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of social media. OBJECTIVE: This study comprises two objectives: 1) To investigate the relationship among self-esteem,

Psychosocial stress, self-esteem, and social adjustment: A moderated mediation analysis in Taiwanese adolescents with Tourette syndrome.

PURPOSE: Recent studies have shown that tics and related comorbidities can cause poorer social adjustment, lower self-esteem, and higher psychosocial stress among adolescents with Tourette syndrome. This study explored the role of self-esteem in mediating the relationship between psychosocial stress and social adjustment among adolescents with Tourette syndrome, and the role of comorbidities in moderating the relationship between self-esteem and social adjustment. DESIGN AND METHODS: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 118 Taiwanese adolescents with Tourette syndrome aged between 12 an

How does social comparison within a self-help group influence adjustment to chronic illness? A longitudinal study.

Despite the growing popularity of self-help groups for people with chronic illness, there has been surprisingly little research into how these may support adjustment to illness. This study investigated the role that social comparison, occurring within a self-help group, may play in adjustment to chronic illness. A model of adjustment based on control process theory and response shift theory was tested to determine whether social comparisons predicted adjustment after controlling for the catalyst for adjustment (disease severity) and antecedents (demographic and psychological factors). A sample

Perceived social support mediates between prior attachment and subsequent adjustment: a study of urban African American children.

The processes whereby attachment and other social and cognitive factors contribute to social and emotional adjustment were examined. Participants were 56 African American children from low-income urban families. Attachment and sociability were assessed in the strange situation when children were 4.5 years old. Two years later, children were interviewed regarding their perceptions of social support and their attributions about others' intentions. Also assessed at Time 2 were child verbal intelligence, defensive response style, children's self-reports, and parent reports of child adjustment. As

The Effectiveness of Aripiprazole for Tics, Social Adjustment, and Parental Stress in Children and Adolescents with Tourette's Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Tourette's syndrome (TS) frequently results in a negative impact on multiple functional domains. This prospective open-label study investigated the potential effectiveness of aripiprazole for tics, social adjustment, and parental stress in children and adolescents with TS. METHODS: Study participants consisted of 26 patients (mean age 10.4 ± 3.0 years; 22 boys and 4 girls) who were prescribed aripiprazole, with each dose ranging from 2.5 to 15 mg/day. At baseline and 2, 4, and 8 weeks from baseline, tic symptoms, social adjustment, and parenting stress were assessed using the Yale

A propensity score-adjusted HRV analysis of social avoidance and distress in patients with panic disorders.

Panic disorder (PD) may accompany elevated social avoidance and distress (SAD). Higher SAD in patients with PD predicts a poorer prognosis and response to treatment. As heart rate variability (HRV) reflects the self-regulatory capacity underlying SAD, applying HRV to distinguish PD heterogeneity would be clinically beneficial in formulating personalized treatment strategies. We hypothesized that HRV would be lower in patients with PD and severe SAD (PD-SAD group) than in those without SAD (PD group). A total of 288 patients met the eligibility criteria, with complete collection of variables of

Adjusting for social risk factors impacts performance and penalties in the hospital readmissions reduction program.

OBJECTIVE: Medicare's Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP) does not account for social risk factors in risk adjustment, and this may lead the program to unfairly penalize safety-net hospitals. Our objective was to determine the impact of adjusting for social risk factors on HRRP penalties. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. DATA SOURCES/STUDY SETTING: Claims data for 2 952 605 fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), congestive heart failure (CHF) or pneumonia from December 2012 to November 2015. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Poverty, disability,

Social and behavioral characteristics of young adult drink/drivers adjusted for level of alcohol use.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption and drink/driving are positively correlated and many predictors of alcohol use also predict drink/driving. Past research has not fully distinguished the contributions of personal risk factors from the level of alcohol use in the prediction of drink/driving. As a result, the extent to which predictors are specific to drink/driving, versus due to a mutual association to alcohol use, is unclear. METHODS: This study examined the unique and shared risk factors for drink/driving and alcohol use, and examined the attributable risk (AR) associated with predictors of dr

Expressed emotion, family dynamics and symptom severity in a predictive model of social adjustment for schizophrenic young adults.

While numerous studies have concluded that high expressed emotion (EE) in relatives predicts relapse in schizophrenia, other aspects of patient outcome have not been well studied. Our purpose was to determine the extent to which family dynamics and expressed emotion may predict variance in patient social adjustment when controlling for symptom severity. Sixty-nine schizophrenic outpatients and 108 of their relatives participated. Relatives' EE was assessed, and they were administered the FACES III for perceptions of family cohesion and adaptability. Patients were interviewed at about the same

The Ontario Child Health Study: social adjustment and mental health of siblings of children with chronic health problems.

There has been controversy concerning the type and amount of psychosocial maladjustment among the siblings of children with chronic physical health problems and disabilities. Most previous studies have been conducted in clinical populations, often from tertiary care centers. This paper reports the risks of psychiatric disorders and social adjustment problems of the siblings of chronically ill children found in the Ontario Child Health Study (OCHS). The OCHS was a general population survey of 3,294 children, 4-16 years of age, living in 1,869 randomly selected families in the Province of Ontari

Psychological adjustment in grief in the United States and South Korea: Continuing bonds, meaning making, and social support.

Psychological adjustment following a loss involves grief-related proceses that may be common across cultures and culturally shaped. Continuing bonds, meaning making, and social support play significant roles in bereavement adjustment, yet their roles may vary across cultural contexts. In this cross-national study, we investigated similarities and differences in the relations among psychological distress, salient grief-related variables (i.e., internalized/externalized continuing bonds, meaning making, and implicit/explicit social support), and psychological adjustment among grievers in the U.S

Relating differently: Assessing and comparing associations between social and affective adjustment factors in immigrant and non-immigrant students.

BACKGROUND: Immigrant students face additional challenges in educational settings. Current research lacks understanding of the associations between social aspects of students' school life, their impact on adjustment and how these differ based on immigrant status. We argue that merely noting about the existence of differences is insufficient, and there is a need to better comprehend the complexity of such inequalities. AIMS: This study aimed at exploring associations among reported bullying, friend and teacher relationships, achievement motivation, well-being and sense of school belonging, and
