Feeling insignificant, hopeless, and unkind to oneself: lessons learned from lonely young adults during pandemic times.

The current study investigated the construct of anti-mattering (feeling insignificant and invisible) and its links with loneliness and anxiety during times of pandemic social restrictions and isolation. Importantly, it also examined how levels of anti-mattering relate to levels of domain-specific measures of social hopelessness and social self-compassion. We assessed 282 undergraduate students during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants completed the Anti-Mattering Scale (AMS), the UCLA Loneliness Scale, pandemic-specific measures of anxiety and worry, and measures of soci

Mental Health Outcomes of Discrimination among College Students on a Predominately White Campus: A Prospective Study.

Racial discrimination is a social stressor harmful to mental health. In this paper, we explore the links between mental health and interpersonal discrimination-related social events, exposure to vicarious racism via social media, and rumination on racial injustices using a daily diary design. We utilize data from a racially diverse sample of 149 college students with 1,489 unique time observations at a large predominantly White university. Results show that interpersonal discrimination-related social events predicted greater self-reported anger, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and loneliness bot

Treatment Options for Fear of Blushing.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review mechanisms of blushing and fear of blushing from physiological, neuropharmacological and psychological viewpoints, and to evaluate current forms of treatment for blushing-related fear. RECENT FINDINGS: Blushing appears to be driven primarily by sympathetic adrenomedullary and neural vasodilator discharge, possibly in association with secondary neurovascular inflammation. Psychological risk factors for fear of blushing include social anxiety, coupled with heightened self-focused attention and inflated beliefs about the likelihood and social costs of blushing. In ad

Deliberate and spontaneous sensations of disembodiment: capacity or flaw?

INTRODUCTION: Hallucinations that involve shifts in the subjectively experienced location of the self, have been termed "out-of-body experiences" (OBEs). Early psychiatric accounts cast OBEs as a specific instance of depersonalisation and derealisation disorder (DPD-DR). However, during feelings of alienation and lack of body realism in DPD-DR the self is experienced within the physical body. Deliberate forms of "disembodiment" enable humans to imagine another's visuo-spatial perspective taking (VPT), thus, if a strong relationship between deliberate and spontaneous forms of disembodiment coul

How does psychiatric diagnosis affect young people's self-concept and social identity? A systematic review and synthesis of the qualitative literature.

Receiving a psychiatric diagnosis in childhood or adolescence can have numerous social, emotional and practical repercussions. Among the most important of these are the implications for a young person's self-concept and social identity. To ensure diagnoses are communicated and managed in a way that optimally benefits mental health trajectories, understanding young people's first-hand experience of living with a diagnosis is paramount. This systematic review collates, evaluates and synthesises the qualitative research that has explored how psychiatric diagnosis interacts with young people's sel

Lifetime acute suicidal affective disturbance symptoms account for the link between suicide-specific rumination and lifetime past suicide attempts.

BACKGROUND: Suicide-specific rumination, defined as rumination about one's suicidal thoughts, intentions, and plans, and Acute Suicidal Affective Disturbance (ASAD) have each been proposed as relevant and proximal predictors of suicidal behavior. The purpose of the current study was to examine relations between suicide-specific rumination, ASAD, and previous number of lifetime suicide attempts, particularly whether ASAD accounted for the association between suicide-specific rumination and previous lifetime suicide attempts. METHODS: Undergraduate students with a past history of suicidality (N

Peer problems in Tourette's disorder.

To explore the social adjustment and peer relationships of children with Tourette's disorder, 29 patients with mild to moderate Tourette's disorder were studied. Children underwent neuropsychological testing. The patients completed self-esteem scales and their parents and teachers completed behavior rating scales. Peer relationships were examined with the Pupil Evaluation Inventory, which is a sociometric questionnaire completed by the child's classmates and provides measures of aggression, withdrawal, and likability. As a group, Tourette's disorder patients were significantly more withdrawn,

The behavior of adult alcoholic men abused as children.

Thirty-one adult alcoholic men who suffered physical abuse during childhood (defined as repetitive, physically injurious punishment) were compared with a control group of alcoholic men without histories of child abuse. A similar comparison was made for an age-matched subgroup of 21 men. As adults, the abused alcoholic men demonstrated significantly more legal difficulties, domestic violence, and violence against authority figures than the controls. They also had a higher incidence of serious suicide attempts, suicidal drinking, and increased level of pervasive and situational anxiety. The beha

Personality characteristics of death-row prison inmates.

An analysis of MMPI differences that appeared between a sample of 34 male inmates sentenced to be executed by asphyxiation and a representative prison population sample of 2,551 male inmates revealed that the profiles of both groups were indicative of a behavior disorder. The Death Row inmates presented significantly higher elevations on the PA and SC scales. Further evaluation of the subscale scores for the PA and SC scales demonstrated that the test responses of the Death Row inmates to these two scales were related more closely to feelings of resentment, hopelessness, failure, frustration,

Potential profiles of social isolation in elderly stroke patients: A cross-sectional study.

AIM: Social isolation is a psychological state resulting from insufficient interpersonal interaction, marked by loneliness, helplessness, and unmet social needs following voluntary or involuntary social withdrawal. It may negatively impact the quality of life in elderly stroke patients. Due to its subtle nature and the varying clinical presentations and intervention needs across demographic groups, exploring its characteristics and influencing factors in this population holds important clinical value. METHODS: A total of 376 elderly stroke patients were surveyed between January and October 20

"It's not just loneliness": cognitive-emotional-behavioral signatures of social isolation in residential aged care.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social isolation is a common and serious problem among nursing home residents, negatively impacting their physical and mental health. Despite this, it is often misunderstood as loneliness, and the specific manifestations of social isolation in this population remain unclear. This study aimed to explore perceptions and experiences of social isolation among nursing home residents from the cognitive-behavioral perspective. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Semistructured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 18 purposively sampled socially isolated residents from nur

[Social aspects of epilepsy: marriage, pregnancy, driving, antiepileptic drug withdrawal and against social stigma].

Persons with epilepsy need adequate advice and effective counselling about issues such as marriage, pregnancy, risks of inheriting epilepsy, driving, employment and antiepileptic drug withdrawal, because these persons are not receiving important information and education about their condition and possible adverse effects of treatment. Furthermore, women with epilepsy have increased rates of pregnancy complications and poor fetal outcomes including congenital malformations and developmental delay related to both their epilepsy and antiepileptic drugs. However, approximately 90% of all women wit

Resilience to bullying victimization: the role of individual, family and peer characteristics.

Little research attention has been paid to bullied students who function better than expected and are therefore defined as "resilient". The present longitudinal study aimed to identify individual, family and peer factors that predict fewer than expected levels of depression and delinquency following experiences of bullying victimization. The sample consisted 3,136 adolescents. Self-report data were used to measure bullying victimization at age 13 and 14 and depression and delinquency at age 14. We examined the effects of gender, self-esteem, social alienation, parental conflict, sibling victim

Stereotype threat contributes to social difficulties in people with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: The experience of stereotype threat (where the prospect of conforming to a stereotype, or of being treated in terms of it, becomes self-threatening) affects members of social groups about whom devaluing stereotypes exist. Although a widely endorsed stereotype of schizophrenia concerns social skill impairment, it is unclear whether the experience of stereotype threat impacts social functioning in this group. The purpose of the present study was to test whether people with schizophrenia would perform more poorly in a social setting in which they felt stereotyped as mentally ill. METH
