Social isolation and depressive symptoms among older adults with different functional status in China: A latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is considered a risk factor for depression in older adults. Since there may be heterogeneity in the experience of social isolation, we aimed to investigate social isolation patterns and their association with depressive symptoms, for older adults with different functional status separately. METHODS: This study used data from the fifth wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A total of 8262 participants, defined as older adults aged 60 years and above, were included in the analysis, comprising 49.9 % (n = 4124) men and 50.1 % (n = 4138)

Exploring Public Perceptives on Palliative and Hospice Care in Social Media: Topic Modeling and Multi-Class Sentiment Analysis.

Palliative care ensures patients' dignity and quality of life while supporting families during serious illness. However, barriers such as inadequate awareness hinder access to these services. This study analyzed 9,147 perspectives about palliative and hospice care posted on Naver Knowledge iN, a popular online platform in South Korea, using contextualized topic modeling and multi-class sentiment analysis (SA). Nine major themes were identified. SA showed that "sadness" was the most common emotion, followed by "neutral" and "anxiety." Notably, negative emotions were closely tied to "emotional a

Social Network Intervention in Physical Education Classes Through Social Support to Promote Physical Activity and Reduce Screen Time in Adolescents: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

Physical activity (PA) and screen time (ST) are complex behaviors influenced by social factors such as relationships with family and friends, linked to mechanisms such as social support. This study implemented a segmentation-based social network intervention which is a promising approach to improving health-behaviors in a network. The objective was to determine the effects of a social network intervention through social support from friends and parents on PA and ST among adolescents. A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted involving 4 schools, 24 classrooms, with 787 adolescents. A

Impact of social class on body fatness among rural pre-school Bengalee Hindu children of Arambagh, West Bengal, India.

Body composition is a useful marker for assessing the adiposity of an individual. The amount of body fat (BF) differs with age, sex, environmental conditions and genotype, and is a good indicator of the health and nutritional status of a community. As the subcutaneous fat serves as a reservoir for energy during nutritional deprivation, lower BF in comparison with other studies indicates a lower energy intake by those children, who are affected by their lower socio-economic status. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the impact of socio-economic class, after allowing for sex and

Respiratory disease in young adults: influence of early childhood lower respiratory tract illness, social class, air pollution, and smoking.

The prevalence of cough during the day or night in winter has been studied in 3,899 20-year-olds. These were members of a cohort born in England, Scotland, and Wales in the last week of March 1946. The prevalence of cough and current smoking habits have been related to events recorded during infancy and childhood-that is, exposure to air pollution, social class of father, and lower respiratory tract illness under 2 years of age. At age 20, of these factors cigarette smoking was found to have the greatest effect on symptom prevalence, followed by a history of a lower respiratory tract illness u

Bridging Social Determinants of Health and Multidimensional Frailty Among Older Adults: A Domain-Specific Latent Class and Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDoH) are increasingly recognized as key contributors to frailty, yet their multidimensional associations remain underexplored. This study examined how multiple SDoH domains and specific variables relate to distinct frailty domains among Chinese community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: We analyzed 10,654 adults aged ≥ 60 years in the 2020 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Five SDoH domains, defined by the Healthy People 2030 framework, were assessed: Economic Stability, Education Access and Quality, Health Care Access and Quality, Neig

How Do Social Workers Cope with Hopeless Missions and Dirty Work? A Biographical Approach to Class and Gender Variations.

This article looks at the work of legal guardians in Switzerland. They are civil servants, typically qualified social workers, responsible for implementing protective measures ("safeguarding") for adults considered vulnerable. This work can be understood as "dirty work." Professionals must provide imposed help to individuals who are often non-consenting. They carry out coercive tasks that are considered morally questionable. Furthermore, guardians interact with stigmatized individuals, which can expose them to the risk of stigma contamination. Finally, they are entrusted with caring for "unpla

Identifying Patterns of Social and Economic Hardship Among Structurally Vulnerable Women: A Latent Class Analysis of HIV/STI Risk.

Women who are structurally vulnerable are at heightened risk for HIV/STIs. Identifying typologies of structural vulnerability that drive HIV/STI risk behavior is critical to understanding the nature of women's risk. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to classify exotic dancers (n = 117) into subgroups based on response patterns of four vulnerability indicators. Latent class regression models tested whether sex- and drug-related risk behavior differed by vulnerability subgroup. Prevalence of vulnerability indicators varied across housing instability (39%), financial insecurity (39%), limited

Following the power: social-class inequities in mortality from accidental poisonings, suicide, and chronic liver disease in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Hazardous working conditions fuel inequities in accidental-poisoning, suicide, and chronic-liver-disease mortality. Relational theories suggest such hazards flow from power imbalances between workers, managers, and employers - social classes demarcated by power over property and labor. However, to our knowledge, no US studies using relational measures have analyzed class inequities in the cause-specific mortality. METHODS: We used the Mortality Disparities in American Communities dataset, which links the 2008 American Community Survey to the National Death Index through December

Examining how social class discrimination is associated with combustible tobacco use, nicotine vaping, and dual use among adolescents in California.

Adolescents who are disadvantaged in social class are twice as likely to use tobacco than their counterparts. Despite extensive research showing how social class is associated with using tobacco products, there is limited knowledge about the association between the discrimination that adolescents experience because they are disadvantaged in social class and their use of tobacco products. To provide new knowledge, this cross-sectional study examined the association between social class discrimination and tobacco use among 1,678 adolescents at two public high schools in California. Social class

Multiple disadvantages: class, social capital, and well-being of ethnic minority groups in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused untold damage to the socio-economic lives of people all over the world. Research has also demonstrated great inequality in the pandemic experience. In the UK as in many other countries, people from ethnic minority backgrounds and in working-class positions have suffered disproportionately more than the majority group and those in salariat positions in terms of income loss, financial difficulty, and vulnerability to infection. Yet little is known about how people coped in the daily lives and tried to maintain their well-being during the most diffic

Social Determinants of Health Phenotypes and Cardiometabolic Condition Prevalence Among Patients in a Large Academic Health System: Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adverse social determinants of health (SDoH) have been associated with cardiometabolic disease; however, disparities in cardiometabolic outcomes are rarely the result of a single risk factor. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify and characterize SDoH phenotypes based on patient-reported and neighborhood-level data from the institutional electronic medical record and evaluate the prevalence of diabetes, obesity, and other cardiometabolic diseases by phenotype status. METHODS: Patient-reported SDoH were collected (January to December 2020) and neighborhood-level social vulnerabi

Working conditions mediate the association between social class and physical function in older age in Sweden: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Global demographics are changing as societies all over the world are aging. This puts focus on maintaining functional ability and independence into older age. Individuals from lower social classes are at greater risk of developing limitations in physical function later in life. In this study, we investigated the mediating role of working conditions in the association between occupation-based social class and physical function measured as self-reported mobility limitations and objectively measured physical impairment in older age. METHODS: Two Swedish surveys, linked at the individ

Academic and Social Functioning Associated with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Latent Class Analyses of Trajectories from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade.

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are known to exhibit significantly lower academic and social functioning than other children. Yet the field currently lacks knowledge about specific impairment trajectories experienced by children with ADHD, which may constrain early screening and intervention effectiveness. Data were analyzed from a nationally representative U.S. cohort in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999 (ECLS-K) for 590 children (72.7 % male) whose parents reported a formal diagnosis of ADHD. Children's math, reading, and in
