[The course after amputation of upper extremities with special reference to the use of prostheses and social conditions].

Sixty-six patients with upper limb amputations were followed-up in their homes. The object of this article was to assess the course as regards the prosthesis, the extent to which this was employed, and to investigate the factors which influence the type of prosthesis and the social conditions of the patient. The amputees were divided into four groups. Twenty-six employed an active prosthesis for more than eight hours daily, six for less than eight hours daily, 16 employed passive prostheses and 18 did not employ prostheses. 65% of the amputations were performed on account of accidents. A group

Laboratory conditions matter: social housing in male and female laboratory mice in a multicenter study approach.

Despite numerous studies and literature reviews, the social housing of laboratory mice is still under debate. Aggression and social stress can lead to physiological and behavioral alterations, especially in male mice, whereas single housing is a potential source of discomfort, particularly in female mice. This multicenter study aimed to assess the impact of single versus group housing on severity in both sexes and to examine whether a general recommendation could be made. C57BL/6NRj mice from the same litters of a commercial breeder were housed either singly or in groups of four across four di

Decomposing socioeconomic differences in self-rated health and healthcare expenditure by chronic conditions and social determinants.

BACKGROUND: Lower socioeconomic status is associated with lower self-rated health and higher healthcare expenditure. This study identifies which chronic conditions and social determinants contribute most to socioeconomic differences in self-rated health and healthcare expenditure. METHODS: Registry and survey data combining 3 socioeconomic indicators (income, education, and financial welfare), 26 social determinants, 20 chronic conditions, age, sex, self-rated health, and healthcare expenditure for 135,183 Dutch individuals aged 25-65, were linked at individual level. Housing conditions during self-administration determine motivation for cocaine in mice following chronic social defeat stress.

RATIONALE: Stress exposure has a lasting impact on motivated behavior and can exacerbate existing vulnerabilities for developing a substance use disorder. Several models have been developed to examine how stressful experiences shape drug reward. These range from locomotor sensitization and conditioned place preference to the propensity for drug self-administration or responding to drug-predictive cues. While self-administration studies are considered to have more translational relevance, most of the studies to date have been conducted in rats. Further, many self-administration studies are cond

Impact of secondary health conditions on social role participation for a long-term physical disability cohort.

For people living with long-term physical disability (LTPD) social participation may involve managing physical impairments and secondary health conditions (SHCs) that are not due to the pathophysiology of the LTPD diagnosis itself. Prior research found a negative relationship between SHCs and participation in social roles in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). We expand on this research by investigating the influence of SHCs on participation in social roles for people with one of four LTPDs, controlling for co-variates. We (1) evaluated the associations between SHCs and participation in soci

Psychological and social factors in undergoing reconstructive surgery among individuals with craniofacial conditions: an exploratory study.

Objective : Reconstructive surgery to improve psychological well-being is commonly offered to children with craniofacial conditions. Few studies have explored the challenges of reconstructive surgery beyond the physical risks: poor treatment outcomes, infection, brain damage, and death. This qualitative study aims to understand the psychological and social implications such interventions can have for individuals with craniofacial conditions. Design : A total of 38 individuals between the ages of 12 and 61 with such craniofacial conditions as Sturge-Weber syndrome, Treacher Collins syndrome, Mö

Life course social and health conditions linked to frailty in Latin American older men and women.

BACKGROUND: Gender, social conditions, and health throughout the life course affect functional health in later life. This article addresses two specific hypotheses: i) life-course social and health conditions are associated with frailty; and ii) differential exposure and/or vulnerability of women and men to life-course conditions may account for gender differences in frailty. METHODS: Data originated from a cross-national survey of older adults living in five large Latin American cities. Frailty was defined as the presence of three or more of five criteria: unintentional weight loss (10 pound

[Hepatitis C virus infections among persons attending special clinics dealing with problems related to social conditions].

We have studied the prevalence of hepatitis C virus antibodies among 526 persons who attended an HIV diagnostic and counselling clinic and a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases in Oslo, Norway, during a 4-month period in early 1990. Possible risk factors for contracting hepatitis C virus infection were analysed and compared with results of the anti-hepatitis C virus test. The over-all prevalence rate of positive anti-hepatitis C virus tests was 7%. The prevalence rate was highest, 70%, among intravenous drug users (26/37). When intravenous drug users were excluded, only 2% of the remainin

Prediction of Prevalent Cardiovascular Disease Using Social, Environmental, and Behavioral Factors: A Vital Conditions Framework Approach.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States. We examined whether a model that classifies prevalent CVD using clinical risk factor precursors (social, environmental, and behavioral factors), age, and sex, organized according to the Vital Conditions for Health framework, demonstrates good discrimination and calibration. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed the 2021 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) dataset (N = 18,435 adults). Cardiovascular disease prevalence was defined using self-reporte

Experiences of Social Relationships for Adults Living With Multiple Long-Term Conditions: A Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Social relationships are important for self-management and outcomes of multiple long-term conditions (MLTC). Previous research indicates MLTC negatively impacts social relationships and people living with MLTC do not feel adequately supported to manage their health. However, there is limited understanding of the processes and contextual factors that influence social relationships in the context of MLTC. This study explored experiences of social relationships for adults living with MLTC to improve understanding of their social relationship needs. METHODS: Semi-structured telephone

Associations between constructs related to social relationships and mental health conditions and symptoms: an umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness and social isolation are increasingly recognised as prevalent among people with mental health problems, and as potential targets for interventions to improve quality of life and outcomes, as well as for preventive strategies. Understanding the relationship between quality and quantity of social relationships and a range of mental health conditions is a helpful step towards development of such interventions. PURPOSE: Our aim was to give an overview of associations between constructs related to social relationships (including loneliness and social isolation) and diagnosed

Preinjury Social Determinants of Health Disparities Predict Postinjury Psychosocial Conditions in Adult Traumatic Brachial Plexus Injuries.

BACKGROUND: Adult traumatic brachial plexus injuries (TBPIs) are life-altering events that can have detrimental effects on a patient's quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To examine how social determinants of health (SDOH) disparities influence the risk of developing new psychosocial conditions after TBPIs in previously psychiatric-naïve patients. METHODS: Between January 2010 and June 2019, a retrospective analysis was performed using PearlDiver's Mariner, an all-payer claims database, to create 3 cohorts: TBPI disparity cohort: patients with TBPI and presence of at least 1 SDOH disparity before in

Association of Childhood Social-Emotional Functioning Profiles at School Entry With Early-Onset Mental Health Conditions.

IMPORTANCE: More than 50% of lifetime mental health disorders develop by early adolescence, and yet it is not well understood how early childhood social-emotional functioning varies in populations or how differences in functioning may be associated with emerging mental health conditions. OBJECTIVES: To identify profiles of social-emotional functioning at kindergarten school entry (age 5 years) and to examine to what extent profiles are related to early-onset mental health conditions (ages 6-14 years). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study followed up a population c

Relationships between gender, age, family conditions, physical and mental health, and social isolation of elderly caregivers.

BACKGROUND: In an aging population an increasing number of elderly caregivers will be called upon to provide care over a long period, during which time they will be burdened both by caregiving and by the physiological effects of their own aging. Among them there will be more aged male caregivers, who will probably be less prepared than women to become caregivers. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between caregivers' gender, age, family income, living arrangements and social support as independent variables, and depressive symptoms, comorbidities, level of frailty, grip

Peer relations of youth with pediatric conditions and health risks: promoting social support and healthy lifestyles.

Peer relations and close friendships play important roles in youngsters' emotional development and take on special significance when a child or adolescent has a chronic disease. This article reviews the key ways that peer relations have been examined in youth with chronic pediatric conditions and specifically focuses on (1) the role of peers and close friends as a source of support, (2) friends' influence on treatment adherence, and (3) peers' and friends' impact on health-promoting and health-risk behaviors. In general, youngsters with chronic conditions do not have more problems in their pee

Asthma from childhood to adulthood: asthma severity, allergies, sensitization, living conditions, gender influence and social consequences.

The course of asthma severity, clinical allergies, allergic sensitization, changes in living conditions and social outcome were studied prospectively over five follow-up visits from the mean age of 9 to 30 years in a cohort of 28 boys and 27 girls, selected randomly among asthmatic children attending a paediatric outpatient unit. Asthma severity improved from childhood to adulthood, judged by symptom and medication scores and by the number of hospital admissions, but only nine subjects (16%) had been free from symptoms and medication over the last year of follow-up. After adolescence, asthma c

The Prevalence of Co-Occurring Conditions and an Exploration of Social Factors Influencing Health in Down Syndrome.

Measuring health, a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in Down syndrome (DS) was recently achieved through creation of a new health measure. However, additional information on health-related medical topics and how health measurement varies in demographic groups from that cohort has not been presented. We surveyed caregivers of individuals age 0-21 with Down syndrome (DS) from a national sample about the health of their son or daughter with DS as part of a broader study to create a valid, reliable health measure in DS. Social anxiety is associated with greater autonomic and visuocortical generalization of conditioned aversive responses to faces.

Aversive generalization learning is an adaptive trait that is necessary for survival in a dynamic environment. However, this process is exaggerated in persons with anxiety disorders, leading to overgeneralization of learned threat associations, hyperreactive fight-or-flight responses, and persistent avoidance. Patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) exhibit impaired conditioned threat discrimination particularly with respect to social stimuli, such as faces. The present study examined the relationship between social anxiety and generalization of visuocortical and pupil dilation responses t

Social cognition and bulimic symptoms in male undergraduate students: The conditional effect of emotion dysregulation.

OBJECTIVE: Research demonstrates associations between poor social cognition and eating disorder (ED) pathology. Moreover, research shows that individuals with EDs struggle with emotion regulation. The present study replicates and extends the literature on social cognition and ED pathology, which previously focused largely on symptoms of anorexia nervosa among women while the present study focuses on symptoms of bulimia nervosa among undergraduate men. Further, this study tests the hypothesis that better emotion regulation mitigates the association between social cognition and ED pathology. ME
