Polisye Kont Moustik: A Culturally Competent Approach to Larval Source Reduction in the Context of Lymphatic Filariasis and Malaria Elimination in Haiti.

Community engagement has become an increasingly important focus of global health programs. Arbovirus emergence in the Americas (Zika and chikungunya virues), and global goals for malaria and lymphatic filariasis elimination, mean that community-based mosquito control has taken on a new salience. But how should mosquito control initiatives be designed and implemented in ways that best engage local people? What are the challenges and trade-offs of different strategies, not only for effectiveness but also for scale-up? In this paper, we describe the social and political dynamics of a pilot study

Somatization: social control and illness production in a religious cult.

The aim of this ethnographic work is twofold: first, to document the specifics of the illness experience within the highly controlling milieu of a religious cult; second, to explore the connection between somatization and social control in this particular context. Anthropologists have long realized that in order to comprehend disease etiology, one must examine both biological and sociocultural processes, as both are implicated in the production of illness. Illness experiences of those members of the cult described here appeared to be direct responses to extreme intrapsychic and social control:

Structural Interventions for HIV Prevention Among Women Who Use Drugs: A Global Perspective.

We briefly review extant literature on the contextual sources of HIV risk among drug users—the drug user risk environment—and on structural interventions to address drug user vulnerability to HIV. We argue that issues of gender inequality and gendered power relations are largely absent from this literature. We then identify 5 contextual factors that are critical for understanding women's HIV-related vulnerability and whose impacts are exacerbated among women who use drugs, including a division of reproductive labor in which women bear primary responsibility for family caretaking, women's lack

Manipulations of attention enhance self-regulation.

Successful goal-directed behavior requires self-regulation to override competing impulses. Emerging evidence suggests that attention may mediate such acts, but little is known about the specific operations through which attention might influence self-regulation. Here we test this often-implicit assumption by manipulating attention mechanisms in two ways: one controlling the inhibition of inappropriate responses; the other controlling the breadth of attention. Participants significantly improved their performance on a self-regulation task after practice on a response inhibition task (Experiment

Social capital in an outdoor recreation context.

This study examined social capital development in three all-terrain vehicles (ATV) clubs in Maine using an adapted version of Lin's (2001) social capital theory model. The structural components of social capital identified included collective assets and individual assets in the form of normative behavior and trust relationships. Also identified were counter-norms for individual ATV riders identified as having divergent norms from club members. The second component of social capital is access to and mobilization of network contacts and resources. Access networks in the context of the ATV clubs

YouTube as an information source for clubfoot: a quality analysis of video content.

Idiopathic clubfoot is the most common congenital anomaly of the lower extremity. YouTube has emerged as an important source of health-related information for patients and families. Parents seek information about clubfoot on YouTube. However, the quality of these videos remains unknown. Therefore, we decided to evaluate the quality of YouTube videos about clubfoot. We searched YouTube for clubfoot videos using appropriate keywords. English language videos with more than 10 000 views were included. Three fellowship trained pediatric orthopedic surgeons independently assessed the videos and clas

The cumulative impact of sexual revictimization on emotion regulation difficulties: an examination of female inmates.

The present study examined associations between child sexual abuse (CSA), adult sexual victimization, and emotion regulation difficulties in a sample of 168 incarcerated women. Approximately 50% of the participants reported CSA, 54% reported adult sexual victimization, and 38% reported sexual revictimization (i.e., CSA and adult victimization). Revictimized women reported significantly greater difficulties with several facets of emotion regulation when compared to singly victimized and nonvictimized women. Interestingly, singly victimized women did not demonstrate greater emotion regulation de

Active learning: effects of core training design elements on self-regulatory processes, learning, and adaptability.

This article describes a comprehensive examination of the cognitive, motivational, and emotional processes underlying active learning approaches; their effects on learning and transfer; and the core training design elements (exploration, training frame, emotion control) and individual differences (cognitive ability, trait goal orientation, trait anxiety) that shape these processes. Participants (N = 350) were trained to operate a complex, computer-based simulation. Exploratory learning and error-encouragement framing had a positive effect on adaptive transfer performance and interacted with co

Differential distribution and lateralization of infant gestures and their relation to maternal gestures in the Face-to-Face Still-Face paradigm.

We examined whether there are differences in the lateralization of expressive gestures in infants during normal and stressful interactions with their mothers and the relations between their gestures. Thirty full-term 6-12 month-old infants were videotaped during the Face-to-Face Still-Face paradigm. We coded the occurrence and lateralization of infant self-directed and other-directed gestures and maternal proximal and distal gestures. Infant self-directed gestures increased from the Play to Still-Face episode and decreased from the Still-Face to Reunion episode. Other-directed gestures decreas

Judgements of social inappropriateness in adults with Tourette's syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Socially inappropriate behaviour has frequently been reported in Tourette's syndrome (TS), but has not been studied experimentally. The current study was designed to examine the appropriateness of self-disclosures in TS using an emotional self-disclosure task. METHODS: Adult participants with TS-alone (20) and matched controls (20) were compared on two social judgement tasks, one examining the regulation of behaviour in an emotional self-disclosure task requiring participants to generate examples of autobiographical events, and the other examining mentalistic judgement of others

The self-regulation model of sexual offending: intermediate outcomes and posttreatment recidivism.

The self-regulation model (SRM) is a nine-phase, four-pathway offense process model designed specifically for sexual offenders that is now being applied to the treatment of this group in many settings and jurisdictions. In the present prospective study, we evaluated the validity and utility of the SRM in a sample of 275 adult male sexual offenders treated within the Correctional Service of Canada. Results indicated that participation in treatment resulted in moderate to large sized improvements from pretreatment to posttreatment on a dynamic risk assessment measure and several self-reported tr

Ethical dilemmas in forensic psychiatry: two illustrative cases.

One approach to the analysis of ethical dilemmas in medical practice uses the "four principles plus scope" approach. These principles are: respect for autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice, along with concern for their scope of application. However, conflicts between the different principles are commonplace in psychiatric practice, especially in forensic psychiatry, where duties to patients often conflict with duties to third parties such as the public. This article seeks to highlight some of the specific ethical dilemmas encountered in forensic psychiatry: the excessive use of se

RHAPSODY - Internet-based support for caregivers of people with young onset dementia: program design and methods of a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Young Onset Dementia (YOD), defined by first symptoms of cognitive or behavioral decline occurring before the age of 65 years, is relatively rare compared to dementia of later onset, but it is associated with diagnostic difficulty and heavy burden on affected individuals and their informal carers. Existing health and social care structures rarely meet the needs of YOD patients. Internet-based interventions are a novel format of delivering health-related education, counseling, and support to this vulnerable yet underserved group. METHODS: The RHAPSODY (Research to Assess Policies a

Work-related outcomes of the constructive-confrontation strategy in a job-based alcoholism program.

Most job-based alcoholism policies and programs incorporate a strategy of constructive confrontation. Data from two national samples of over 600 managers in a large corporation were collected to assess the effectiveness of this strategy with both problem drinkers and other problem employees. Results showed that supervisors of problem drinkers took more actions than did supervisors of employees with other problems. Work performance of problem-drinking employees improved more than that of other problem employees. Oral discussions containing both constructive and confrontational topics were posit

Unraveling the complexities: A scoping review of the collateral effects on informal caregivers during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, various infection control measures were introduced that had a profound effect on caregiving dynamics and created burdens in the daily lives of informal caregivers (ICs). A scoping review was conducted to identify burden and support factors for ICs during and beyond the pandemic. Studies were included when they examined ICs' care work during the official time period of the COVID-19 pandemic (March 2020-May 2023) and care hours worked per day or week were specified. Only studies with adult participants and studies in German or English language were incorporated. The

Real-world decision-making for post-exposure management of drug-resistant TB.

BACKGROUND: Effective post-exposure management is essential to control drug-resistant TB (DR-TB). However, little is known about how health care workers (HCWs) make decisions on post-exposure management in resource-constrained settings. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with 22 HCWs in the Western Cape, South Africa. Data were analysed thematically and interpreted using the Situated Clinical Decision-Making Framework (SCDMF) to explore how contextual conditions, knowledge, and clinical cues influence judgement and action in practice. RESULTS: Four int

Correlates of care relationship mutuality among carers of people with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

AIM: This paper presents findings from secondary analysis of longitudinal data on correlates of care relationship mutuality collected from 91 carers of people with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease in the control group of a randomized trial of home-care skill training. BACKGROUND: Many family members and other informal carers are reported to suffer multiple adverse social, financial, psychological and physical caregiving outcomes. High levels of mutuality, the perception that the quality of the care relationship is positive, reportedly ameliorate these negative outcomes. METHOD: Mu

How to resist temptation: the effects of external control versus autonomy support on self-regulatory dynamics.

The purpose of the present study (N=80 undergraduate students) was to examine two issues: first, does external control lead to an increase in resistance to temptation more than the use of autonomy support? Second, what are the long-term effects of these types of educational style? Based on the Personality Systems Interaction (PSI) theory, external control was expected to increase resistance to temptation for those participants who lack initiative and self-motivation (i.e., state-oriented participants). Consistent with expectations, resistance to temptation was greater for state-oriented partic

Neglected by Design: Occupational Parasitic Infections in India's Lower Castes.

Occupational exposure remains a major driver of parasitic infections in India, largely due to caste-based discrimination that severely limits job opportunities for certain communities. Historically marginalized groups, particularly Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), often have little choice but to engage in high-risk occupations such as manual scavenging, landless farming, inland and coastal fishing, tea-estate labor, informal mining, and backyard pig-rearing. Passed down through generations of exploitation, these occupations typically involve minimal or no personal protective eq
