Social, microbial, and immune factors linking bacterial vaginosis and infectious diseases.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a polymicrobial condition of the vaginal microbiota associated with a variety of sexually transmitted infections, infections of maternal and fetal tissues during pregnancy, and even some infections outside of the reproductive tract, including the urinary tract and mouth. BV has also been associated with conditions in which the body generates prominent inflammatory reactions to microbes, including infections of the cervix and other upper genital tract tissues. For reasons still not understood, BV is a highly recurrent and often difficult-to-treat condition, complicat

Understanding the Social Risk Factors That Avert Equitable Lung Cancer Care.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. There is an association between certain social determinants of health (SDOH) and adverse cancer outcomes. These include Black race and low-income, which are associated with poorer adherence to lung cancer screening and presentation at a later stage of disease. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all patients with a diagnosis of lung cancer at a single urban, academic center from 2015 to 2021. Demographic data including race and clinical data including time taken to progress through various chec

Social and environmental risk factors for canine leptospirosis: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Canine leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease of global importance. The identification of social and environmental risk factors remains limited and is needed for planning interventions. Our objectives were to summarise the global trends in social and environmental risk factors for canine leptospirosis and to identify knowledge gaps. METHODS: We searched peer-reviewed and grey literature for observational studies on canine leptospirosis written in English. Variables assessed via formal statistical tests were recorded and categorised into thematic risk factor groups. The risk factors w

Assessing factors associated with social connectedness in adults with mobility disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with mobility disabilities are likely to report limitations in community participation and social connectedness for a variety of reasons, including inaccessible physical environments, health issues, transportation barriers, and limited financial resources. Improving social connectedness is a public health issue and research shows its relation to overall health and life expectancy. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to (1) assess social activity, isolation, and loneliness among people with mobility disabilities compared to those with non-mobility disabilities and (2) u

Psycho-social factors associated with mental resilience in the Corona lockdown.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is not only a threat to physical health but is also having severe impacts on mental health. Although increases in stress-related symptomatology and other adverse psycho-social outcomes, as well as their most important risk factors have been described, hardly anything is known about potential protective factors. Resilience refers to the maintenance of mental health despite adversity. To gain mechanistic insights about the relationship between described psycho-social resilience factors and resilience specifically in the current crisis, we assessed resilience factors, expo

Social Risk Factors for Medication Nonadherence: Findings from the CARDIA Study.

Objectives: Nonadherence to medications has been documented, but the combined effect of social risk factors on medication nonadherence has not been investigated. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, a population-based prospective cohort. The sample (N = 1506) included subjects who at Year 20 (2005-06) were taking prescription medications and completed a 4-item Medication Adherence Scale. Social risk factors were education of high school or less, annual household income <$25,000, high financial strain,

Social relational factors of excessive internet use in four European countries.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescents who deal with more emotional problems have been found to seek escape online, and struggle with excessive internet use (EIU). Poor social relationships have been linked with emotional problems. The current study investigated positive family and school relationships as protective factors against emotional problems and a preference for online social interaction (POSI), both specified as mediators of the association of family and school relationships with EIU. Cross-cultural differences in the model were tested. METHODS: A multi-group SEM was tested on representative sampl

Patient social risk factors and continuity of care for Medicare beneficiaries.

OBJECTIVE: To identify patient social risk factors associated with Continuity of Care (COC) index. DATA SOURCES/STUDY SETTING: Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS), the Dartmouth Institute, and Area Resource File for 2006-2013. STUDY DESIGN: We use regression methods to assess the effect of patient social risk factors on COC after adjusting for medical complexity. In secondary analyses, we assess the effect of social risk factors on annual utilization of physicians and specialists for evaluation and management (E&M). Pediculus capitis infestation according to sex and social factors in Argentina.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the intensity of Pediculus capitis infestation (abundance) among Argentinean schoolchildren. Children's sex and social stratum were analyzed as modifiers of the general prevalence and degree of parasitism. METHODS: The study included 1,370 schoolchildren (692 girls, 678 boys) from 26 schools of the province of La Rioja (21 public schools, five private schools). Classic prevalence was obtained as the percentage of children with nits and/or lice. Moreover, five degrees of parasitism were classified: 0) children with no signs of pediculosis; 0+) children with evidence of

Social, demographic, and clinical factors related to disruptive behaviour in hospital.

OBJECTIVE: This study addresses 2 issues: first, whether the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) or borderline traits differentiates adult patients who demonstrate disruptive behaviour during hospitalization from those patients who do not; and second, whether other clinical variables can be assessed during the emergency visit to differentiate patients who are likely to show disruptive behaviour in hospital from those who are not. METHOD: We completed a case-control, chart-based, retrospective analysis of patients consecutively admitted to an inpatient psychiatric service. We as

[Predictive factors in social adaptation disorders in anorexic and bulimic patients].

A lifetime diagnosis of at least one anxiety disorder has been found in 13% to 75% of women with BN (Herzog, Keller, Sacks, Yeh, & Lavori, 1992; Schwalberg, Barlow, Alger, & Howard, 1992), and in 20% to 55% of women with AN, (Herzog et al., 1992, Laessle et al., 1989). Wittchen et al., 1998) have observed that the frequency and degree of disabilities and impairments associated with mental disorders in adolescence are strongly related to comorbidity (notably with anxiety disorders). However, as noted by Wonderlich et al., 1997, no study has compared ED individuals with and without comorbid anxi

Social factors in relation to physical abuse in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Available evidence has shown that the type of abuse perpetrated on children depends considerably on the social and other factors inherently faced by these children. A total of 119 cases of physical abuse was detected by the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Team of General Hospital, Kuala Lumpur in 1991. Eighty-two cases were categorized as mild and 37 as severe. The average age of those mildly abused was 7.9 years, for those severely abused the average age was 4.2 years. The perpetrators of those mildly abused were often their own parents. However, among those severely abused, the chil

Social factors, diet and breast cancer in a northern Italian population.

The relation of breast cancer to social and dietary variables was evaluated in a case-control study of 368 women with breast cancer admitted to the General Hospital of Pordenone (a town in the eastern side of Northern Italy) and 373 age-matched controls. Occupation was related to the risk of breast cancer, housewives and non-manual workers (teachers and other professionals, clerical workers, etc.) showing relative risks of 1.7 and 2.4 respectively when compared to women occupied in agriculture. The role of education was apparently less important, and not statistically significant. The risk was
