Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research2018eng
Abnormalities in neurophysiological correlates of social perception are a well-known feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little is known if and how ASD specific behavioral interventions may affect neural processing in ASD. The aim of the current study was to investigate for the first time, whether the group-based social skills training SOSTA-FRA would elicit changes in neurophysiological correlates of social perception in high-functioning ASD individuals aged 8-17 years. Event-related potentials (ERPs) of a facial emotion recognition (FER) and a biological motion perception tas

BACKGROUND: Self-focused attention (SFA) and safety behaviors are two variables implicated in the maintenance of social anxiety disorder (SAD).
DESIGN: The present study examined SFA and safety behaviors across two therapies for SAD, cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) and mindfulness and acceptance-based group therapy (MAGT).
METHOD: Participants with symptoms meeting criteria for SAD (N = 137) were randomly assigned to the 12-week-treatment groups (n = 53 for each condition) or a waitlist control (n = 31). Variables were assessed at baseline, midtreatment, posttreatment, and a 3-mont

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recent research suggests that intolerance of uncertainty (IU), most commonly associated with generalized anxiety disorder, also contributes to symptoms of social phobia. This study examines the relationship between IU and social anxiety symptoms across treatment.
METHOD: Changes in IU, social anxiety symptoms, and depression symptoms were examined following cognitive behavior group therapy (CBGT) for social phobia (N=32).
RESULTS: CBGT led to significant improvements in symptoms of social anxiety and depression, as well as reductions in IU. Reductions in IU were as

A field trial was conducted to compare the effects of eight health education and economic incentive interventions on the awareness and acceptance of cataract surgery. Cataract screening and follow-up surgery were offered to more than 19,000 residents age 40 years and older in a probability sample of 90 villages in south India. Eight months after intervention, an evaluation was conducted to identify those in need of surgery who had been operated on. Two principal measures of program effectiveness are examined: awareness of cataract surgery and acceptance of the surgery. The type of intervention

Social class differences in male mortality in New Zealand were investigated separately for Maori, Pacific Island and other New Zealand males aged 15-64. All three groups displayed strong social class mortality gradients but, for each class, the Maori mortality rates were approximately 50% higher than the rates for the "other" category, while the Pacific Islander rates generally occupied an intermediate position. The Maori mortality rates were particularly high for the disease groupings of respiratory diseases, infectious diseases, genito-urinary diseases, endocrine, nutritional and metabolic d

BACKGROUND: Social factors have been shown to be important for physical activity in older adults. The purpose of the present study was to explore the association between (1) social group memberships and satisfaction with social relationships and (2) changes in 24-hour movement behaviors during the retirement transition in adults in Flanders, Belgium.
METHODS: All variables were measured at 4 time points spread from preretirement until 1 year after retirement. The 24-hour movement behaviors were assessed with a wrist-worn accelerometer. As an exploratory analysis, cross-sectional correlations

Background: Although research has been conducted on older adults and social media, the relationship between social media use and social isolation remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationship between social isolation and the frequency of use of social media and group chats. Methods: We measured social isolation using the Japanese version of the Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6) in 411 older adults people living in urban areas. We used a questionnaire to survey their use of social networking services (SNS) such as LINE, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram, and their

In this study, we applied machine learning tools to automatically track the positions of preschool children in a natural free play setting and derived spatial and temporal features from these data to identify social interactions between them. We observed a sample of 20 preschool children (10 female, 10 male; M ± SD = 3.95 ± 0.82 years) in groups of three children each. Friendship among children was assessed, and friend dyads were paired either with a mutual friend (n = 12 groups) or with a mutually disliked peer (n = 11 groups). We used a ceiling-mounted camera to record 10-min free play sessi

Including students with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDDs) in regular classrooms has become a law-enforced common practice in many high- and middle-income countries. Still, without appropriate actions supporting the implementation of inclusive pedagogical practice, students with NDDs remain at increased risk for absenteeism, bullying and underachievement. There is limited knowledge on the feasibility of social skills group training (SSGT) in naturalistic settings. Using a qualitative approach, the objective of this study was to explore the lived experiences of (i) students diagnosed with a

Social anxiety disorder is one of the most common disorders in adolescence. It is associated with severe distress, negative long-term consequences, and chronicity. Cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) is the recommended treatment for social anxiety disorder. However, adolescents with social anxiety disorder consistently show poorer outcomes than any other anxiety disorder. The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of a disorder-specific group CBT to a generic group CBT in treating adolescents with social anxiety disorder. The disorder-specific group CBT was specifically enhanced for ado

Humans efficiently perceive high-level relations and use them to facilitate grouping. For instance, interactive agents can be grouped into coherent social units (social grouping), while nonsocial relations like physically compatible shapes or semantic relatedness form nonsocial grouping. In this study, we examined how grouping based on high-level relations functions in working memory (WM). While previous studies have demonstrated that both social and nonsocial relations enhance WM capacity for the relations themselves, these findings provide only a partial answer to how high-level relations fu

Larger animal groups are widely understood to require more space and expend more energy to mitigate the foraging costs of within-group competition. Yet between-group interactions and shifting resource distributions can obscure links between group size and behaviour, making responses to demographic change difficult to predict. Here, using 33 years of observational data from 12 neighbouring white-faced capuchin (Cebus imitator) groups in Costa Rica, combined with remotely sensed environmental data, we show that within- and between-group competition jointly shape space use, with their relative im

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is highly prevalent with significant lifetime impacts, especially when left untreated. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the current gold standard treatment with successful patient outcomes. Cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) is one form that provides unique benefits to participants including normalization of symptoms and social support, as well as providing increased access to treatment at a lower per-session cost. Research on this mode of treatment has been ongoing for over 20 years, but we still have much to learn about its overall efficacy. The goals of t

BACKGROUND: Social support groups are an important resource for people to cope with problems. Previous studies have reported the different types of support in these groups, but little is known about the type of reactions that sharing of personal experiences induce among members. It is important to know how and to what extent members of support groups influence each other regarding the consumption of medical care. We researched this in a web-based Facebook group of women sterilized with Essure. Essure was a device intended for permanent contraception. From 2015 onward, women treated with Essure

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a major public health problem. Although trivialized, it affects nearly 9% of the world's population and its prevalence increases with age. It affects many people living in nursing homes. In the literature, there is a lot of information on its symptoms, risk factors and therapeutic approaches, but its social representations are rarely studied. The objective of this qualitative focus-group study is to understand the social representations of urinary incontinence of caregivers of institutionalized elderly people, but also of the general population. Seven focus groups

BACKGROUND: Acute fatty liver of pregnancy is a rare but serious complication in the last trimester of pregnancy or postpartum period. Data on the recurrence risk are largely unavailable, as only case reports or very small case series exist in which only 1 woman had recurrent acute fatty liver of pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to estimate the risk of acute fatty liver of pregnancy recurrence and to compare disease severity and gestational age between primary and recurrent disease using patient-provided data from an acute fatty liver of pregnancy social media patient group.

Individual computations and social interactions underlying collective behavior in groups of animals are of great ethological, behavioral, and theoretical interest. While complex individual behaviors have successfully been parsed into small dictionaries of stereotyped behavioral modes, studies of collective behavior largely ignored these findings; instead, their focus was on inferring single, mode-independent social interaction rules that reproduced macroscopic and often qualitative features of group behavior. Here, we bring these two approaches together to predict individual swimming patterns

OBJECTIVE: This is a naturalistic treatment outcome study investigating the impact of pre-existing antidepressant use on the effectiveness of group cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for social phobia.
METHOD: Of the 133 participants who completed the CBT program, 49 reported taking antidepressants (CBT + AD group), while 84 reported not taking antidepressants (CBT group). The treatment program involves 40 h of structured, group-based CBT over 7 weeks. The dependent measures included the Social Phobia Scale and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale, the Depres

Social differences of very preterm birth (22-32 completed weeks of amenorrhea) were studied using data from a large case-control survey in Europe between 1994 and 1997; 1,675 very preterm births and 7,965 full-term births were included. The relation between social factors and very preterm birth was studied according to obstetric history and the mode of delivery onset. Very preterm birth was significantly related to low educational level among women with no previous adverse pregnancy outcome (odds ratio (OR) = 2.67, 95 percent confidence interval (CI) 1.66-4.28) and among primigravid women and

BACKGROUND: The fast-paced and stressful conditions of modern life have increased the need for social and emotional resources that enhance individuals’ psychological resilience. Leisure activities, especially group-based physical exercises, offer significant social and psychological benefits. Among these, recreational running groups stand out, positively influencing participants in various ways. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of stress management in the relationship between recreational runners’ perceived social support and life satisfaction using structural equation modeling a
