The Effects of Social Class on Individuals' Decision-Making Tendencies in a Prestige-Money Game: Social Value or Instrumental Value?

Through a series of three experiments, this study explored the possible influence of social class on the decision-making tendency of prestige-seeking in a Prestige-Money Game, and further explored the internal sources of such influence. In Experiment 1, the participants' social class was manipulated to examine whether there were class effects in prestige-seeking when individuals of different social classes were paired together in a Prestige-Money Game. In Experiment 2, social rank, which only contained ranking differences, was adopted as a more abstract proxy variable for social class to inves

Intergroup bias.

This chapter reviews the extensive literature on bias in favor of in-groups at the expense of out-groups. We focus on five issues and identify areas for future research: (a) measurement and conceptual issues (especially in-group favoritism vs. out-group derogation, and explicit vs. implicit measures of bias); (b) modern theories of bias highlighting motivational explanations (social identity, optimal distinctiveness, uncertainty reduction, social dominance, terror management); (c) key moderators of bias, especially those that exacerbate bias (identification, group size, status and power, threa

Disturbed sense of identity in borderline personality disorder.

Traditionally, personal identity is considered to be important for psychological health and adaptive functioning. Identity diffusion and other more severe forms of disturbance associated with personal identity are regarded as being essential parts of the borderline personality disorder. Moreover, disturbances in identity are seen as being part of the dynamic background for many of the symptoms and maladaptive behaviors found in borderline patients. It is argued, that the development of personal identity is intimately related to, and indeed dependent on, elements of modern culture, with signifi

Collective narcissism moderates the effect of in-group image threat on intergroup hostility.

Results of 4 experiments demonstrated that under in-group image threat collective narcissism predicts retaliatory intergroup hostility. Under in-group criticism (vs. praise) collective narcissists expressed intention to harm the offending out-group but not other, nonoffending out-groups. This effect was specific to collective narcissism and was replicated in studies that accounted for the overlap between collective narcissism and individual narcissism, in-group positivity (in-group identification, blind and constructive patriotism), social dominance orientation, and right wing authoritarianism

Visualizing the Influence of Social Networks on Recovery: A Mixed-Methods Social Identity Mapping Study with Recovering Adolescents.

Background: Social recovery capital (SRC) refers to resources and supports gained through relationships and is vital to adolescent addiction recovery. Much is known about how substance use relates to social networks, but little is known about how other dimensions of social networks influence recovery (e.g., network size/exposure, degree of conflict). Methods: This mixed-methods study sampled 28 adolescents who received treatment for alcohol and other drug (AOD) use disorder (14-19 yrs.: 71% male; M = 17.32 yrs., SD = 1.33; White 82%): 20 were recovery high school (RHS) students. Moral credentials and the expression of prejudice.

Three experiments supported the hypothesis that people are more willing to express attitudes that could be viewed as prejudiced when their past behavior has established their credentials as nonprejudiced persons. In Study 1, participants given the opportunity to disagree with blatantly sexist statements were later more willing to favor a man for a stereotypically male job. In Study 2, participants who first had the opportunity to select a member of a stereotyped group (a woman or an African American) for a category-neutral job were more likely to reject a member of that group for a job stereot

Tourscape, cultural identity, and loyalty in a themed cultural precinct: A study of Datang Everbright City in Xi'an, China.

The archaized block, a typical form of themed cultural precinct in China, creates a consumable and experiential "sense of history" through themed physical environments and symbolic performances. This type of urban space has emerged under the country's cultural-tourism integration policy. In the field of cultural identity research on heritage sites with authentic historical remains, existing studies have confirmed the positive effects of factors such as authenticity of cultural heritage tourism, tourism experience, place attachment, and value perception on cultural identity. However, most of th

The magazine of a sadomasochism club: the tie that binds.

The monthly magazine of a sadomasochism club was investigated as a means of describing important issues for club members. The magazine was selected for this exploratory study because it is: (a) The club's only recorded history; (b) the only repository of club members' writings and photographs; and (c) the only link to the club for about 15% of the membership who do not attend meetings or other club activities because they reside some distance from the club's two West Coast chapters. A descriptive content analysis was performed on 47 issues of the club's magazine, published between October 1983

The differential effects of identification modes on suggestion-making behaviour.

Sharing ideas and offering suggestions for group improvement, while highly beneficial for the group, can challenge its existing order, potentially creating normative conflict. Integrating this perspective with the multidimensional approach to group identification, this research examined the distinct, even opposing, effects of different identification modes on overt suggestion-making behaviour. In two field studies (n = 599 and n = 412), we hypothesized and found that the affective mode of identification (commitment) positively predicted overt suggestion-making behaviour, whereas the normative

Metaphorical identity construction of depression sufferers on Chinese social media.

While prior research has documented various metaphors of depression, their role in identity construction in online communication remains underexplored, particularly in a Chinese cultural context. Drawing on a corpus-assisted analysis of Chinese Weibo posts, this study investigates how depression sufferers use metaphors of "depression" and "self" to construct identities. Metaphors were identified following the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) and coded by two trained coders, with cross-checking and further discussion involving three native Chinese speakers. Results revealed that "depress

What does qualitative evidence tell us about how having a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus impacts an individual's identity? A systematic review.

Despite literature acknowledging the significance of identity, thorough understanding of how Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) impacts identity, and individuals' responses to this, is absent. This systematic literature review gathers, organises and evaluates existing qualitative studies investigating or reporting on how diagnosis of T1DM has impacted an individual's identity, and the ongoing impact that diagnosis of T1DM has on an individual's identity. Thematic synthesis of evidence from 13 studies produced four overarching themes: Social Identity; Loss of Self; Rejecting T1DM from Identity; an

Normative identity construction among women diagnosed with a gambling disorder.

Women with a gambling problem bear a negative social stigma. Based on the theory of symbolic interactionism, this study examined the construction of social identities by 17 Israeli women diagnosed with a gambling disorder. Interpretive interactionist analysis revealed how they construct their identity through correspondence with patterns of behavior that are perceived as normative, and identified 3 major themes: "I'm not actually a gambler" (the presentation of a multidimensional identity comprising other identities besides that of a gambler); "Staying normative during gambling"; and "I have c

The influence of Chinese literature on social identity and collectivistic values: Insights from two studies comparing philology students and general readers.

The psychological functions of Chinese literature have received limited empirical attention despite its central role in cultural transmission. The present research examined how engagement with different genres of Chinese literature relates to social identity strength and collectivistic value orientation, with particular attention to identity-related mechanisms and individual differences in familiarity. Across two complementary studies, we combined experimental and correlational approaches grounded in Social Identity Theory and cultural transmission perspectives. Study 1 employed an experimenta

Substance use, recovery capital, and social networks of adolescents recently initiating inpatient treatment.

BACKGROUND: A variety of personal and environmental resources (recovery capital: RC) support recovery for adolescents. Social identity theory suggests one's alcohol and other drug (AOD) use behavior is strongly influenced by social network behavior. This study examined how the level of pretreatment substance use was associated with RC and social network characteristics among youth entering inpatient treatment. Understanding these relationships may help inform initial treatment engagement and post-treatment transitions. METHOD: Participants (N = 108; Mage=17.1; 61% male; 70% White) completed s

Mere belonging: the power of social connections.

Four experiments examined the effect on achievement motivation of mere belonging, a minimal social connection to another person or group in a performance domain. Mere belonging was expected to increase motivation by creating socially shared goals around a performance task. Participants were led to believe that an endeavor provided opportunities for positive social interactions (Experiment 1), that they shared a birthday with a student majoring in an academic field (Experiment 2), that they belonged to a minimal group arbitrarily identified with a performance domain (Experiment 3), or that they

The effect of social identity on objective and perceived social support in groups.

The social identity approach posits that social identity fosters mutual social support within groups. However, prior research has relied almost exclusively on individual-level self-report measures, neglecting the mutuality of support and the group as a unit of analysis. This pre-registered one-factorial online experiment with three-person groups (N = 306 group members; N = 102 groups) examined how social identity shapes objective mutual support, perceived provided and received support and the perceived benevolence of received support. Following a pre-tested identity manipulation (N = 120), gro

A Systematic Review of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Communication Research: Implications for Resilience Communication and Organizing.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the psychological response to experiencing and/or witnessing a traumatic event. With over 100 million of the global adult population afflicted with this disorder, more systematic research on PTSD is essential, and the COVID-19 pandemic increased that need. Extant research suggests communication lies at the center of PTSD prevention, symptom mitigation, and recovery, yet communication researchers have largely failed to address the disorder. To advance theory and empirical research, this paper presents a systematic review of PTSD studies in communication

Trauma and Identity Development in Yashica Dutt's Coming Out as Dalit.

The paper examines Yashica Dutt's Coming Out as Dalit through the framework of Trauma theory, highlighting the emotional and psychological consequences of hiding one's Dalit identity in a rigidly hierarchical society. This study offers a thorough analysis of the psychological pain caused by caste-based discrimination and the lasting impacts of social marginalisation. It underscores how caste discrimination engenders internalised fear, humiliation, and identity disintegration, resulting in persistent psychological distress. This paper examines how Dutt's young teenager experiences of concealing

Group identification attenuates the effect of historical trauma on mental health: A study of Iraqi Kurds.

Kurds have a long history of victimization and struggle for even the most basic rights. This is reflected in a widely shared belief, according to which they have "no friends but the mountains." Such difficult history may have ongoing negative impact on mental health of present-day Kurds. This article investigates the relations between cognitive availability of historical trauma, historical trauma symptoms, and negative mental health outcomes in a sample of young Kurds who live in the Region of Kurdistan in Iraq. We also examined the potential protective role of strong identification as members
