How social reinforcement learning can lead to metastable polarisation and the voter model.

Previous explanations for the persistence of polarization of opinions have typically included modelling assumptions that predispose the possibility of polarization (i.e., assumptions allowing a pair of agents to drift apart in their opinion such as repulsive interactions or bounded confidence). An exception is a recent simulation study showing that polarization is persistent when agents form their opinions using social reinforcement learning. Our goal is to highlight the usefulness of reinforcement learning in the context of modeling opinion dynamics, but that caution is required when selectin

Emotional Invalidation and Relationship Quality: A Mediational Model Through a Social Learning Lens.

While we know childhood experiences are influential on a child's later socioemotional awareness and behavior, we are still searching for specific mechanisms that influence the transferability of childhood experiences and adult relationship functioning. In this study, we seek to further this area of investigation by examining the interpretation of ambiguous social interactions and perceptions of emotional invalidation as potential mediators of the relationship between perceptions of childhood emotional invalidation and current relationship quality. Participants completed online measures of host

Sentiment Analysis of Social Media Data on Ebola Outbreak Using Deep Learning Classifiers.

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) is an extremely contagious and fatal illness caused by the Ebola virus. Recently, Uganda witnessed an outbreak of EVD, which generated much attention on various social media platforms. To ensure effective communication and implementation of targeted health interventions, it is crucial for stakeholders to comprehend the sentiments expressed in the posts and discussions on these online platforms. In this study, we used deep learning techniques to analyse the sentiments expressed in Ebola-related tweets during the outbreak. We explored the application of three deep l

Contributions of Cerebellar White Matter Microstructure to Social Difficulty in Nonverbal Learning Disability.

Emerging evidence suggests that the cerebellum may contribute to variety of cognitive capacities, including social cognition. Nonverbal learning disability (NVLD) is characterized by visual-spatial and social impairment. Recent functional neuroimaging studies have shown that children with NVLD have altered cerebellar resting-state functional connectivity, which is associated with various symptom domains. However, little is known about cerebellar white matter microstructure in NVLD and whether it contributes to social deficits. Twenty-seven children (12 with NVLD, 15 typically developing (TD))

Environmental Learning of Social Cues: Evidence From Enhanced Gaze Cueing in Deaf Children.

The susceptibility to gaze cueing in deaf children aged 7-14 years old (N = 16) was tested using a nonlinguistic task. Participants performed a peripheral shape-discrimination task, whereas uninformative central gaze cues validly or invalidly cued the location of the target. To assess the role of sign language experience and bilingualism in deaf participants, three groups of age-matched hearing children were recruited: bimodal bilinguals (vocal and sign-language, N = 19), unimodal bilinguals (two vocal languages, N = 17), and monolinguals (N = 14). Although all groups showed a gaze-cueing effe

Hippocampal orexin receptor blocking prevented the stress induced social learning and memory deficits.

Stress as a homeostatic challenge leads to the malfunction of learning and memory processes, namely social learning and memory. The orexin system is involved in stress responses through connections to the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA). In addition, the hippocampus, a structure vulnerable to stress-induced changes, expresses orexin receptors 1 and 2 (OXr1 and OXr2) in various sub-regions. The present study is aimed at assessing the effects of hippocampal orexin receptor blockade on social learning and memory impairments and anxiety development following stress. Male Wistar rats (220-250 g)

Vicarious learning of children's social-anxiety-related fear beliefs and emotional Stroop bias.

Models of social anxiety suggest that negative social experiences contribute to the development of social anxiety, and this is supported by self-report research. However, there is relatively little experimental evidence for the effects of learning experiences on social cognitions. The current study examined the effect of observing a social performance situation with a negative outcome on children's (8 to 11 years old) fear-related beliefs and cognitive processing. Two groups of children were each shown 1 of 2 animated films of a person trying to score in basketball while being observed by othe

An olfactory subsystem that detects carbon disulfide and mediates food-related social learning.

Olfactory signals influence social interactions in a variety of species. In mammals, pheromones and other social cues can promote mating or aggression behaviors; can communicate information about social hierarchies, genetic identity and health status; and can contribute to associative learning. However, the molecular, cellular, and neural mechanisms underlying many olfactory-mediated social interactions remain poorly understood. Here, we report that a specialized olfactory subsystem that includes olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) expressing the receptor guanylyl cyclase GC-D, the cyclic nucleot

Irritable bowel syndrome in twins: heredity and social learning both contribute to etiology.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Heredity has been suggested to explain the finding that irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) tends to run in families. Research in this area has been limited. The aim of the present study was to assess the relative contribution of genetic and environmental (social learning) influences on the development of IBS by comparing concordance rates in monozygotic and dizygotic twins to concordance between mothers and their children. METHODS: Questionnaires soliciting information on the occurrence of more than 80 health problems, including IBS, in self and other family members were sent t

Social perspective-taking and adjustment in emotionally disturbed, learning-disabled, and normal children.

Preadolescent emotionally disturbed, learning-disabled, and normal boys were compared on social perspective-taking and behavioral measures to examine possible contributions of social cognitive deficits to children's adjustment problems. Antisocial-prosocial and withdrawn-gregarious behavior dimensions were studied through subscales derived from teacher ratings. Results indicated that across all groups, high perspective-taking was associated with significantly less withdrawal than was low perspective-taking; within groups, this finding was significant only for the emotionally disturbed boys. Harnessing deep learning to monitor people's perceptions towards climate change on social media.

Social media has become a popular stage for people's views over climate change. Monitoring how climate change is perceived on social media is relevant for informed decision-making. This work advances the way social media users' perceptions and reactions towards climate change can be understood over time, by implementing a scalable methodological framework grounded on natural language processing. The framework was tested in over 1771 thousand X/Twitter posts of Spanish, Portuguese, and English discourses from Southwestern Europe. The employed models were successful (i.e., > 84% success rate) in

Observational activation of anterior cingulate cortical neurons coordinates hippocampal replay in social learning.

Social learning enables a subject to make decisions by observing the actions of another. How neural circuits acquire relevant information during observation to guide subsequent behavior is unknown. Utilizing an observational spatial working memory task, we show that neurons in the rat anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) associated with spatial trajectories during self-running in a maze are reactivated when observing another rat running the same maze. The observation-induced ACC activities are reduced in error trials and are correlated with activities of hippocampal place cells representing the sam

Extending Social Learning Theory to Explain Victimization Among Gang and Ex-Gang Offenders.

This study is among the first to extend and test social learning theory's ability to understand property and violent victimization. It specifically tests whether aspects of definitions, differential reinforcement, and differential association/modeling can explain the three types of victimization of gang members: actual experience, perception of likelihood, and fear. The sample consists of over 300 male and female gang members incarcerated in jails throughout Florida. The results show that all three types of victimization can be explained by the three aspects of social learning theory.

Post-weaning social environment shapes reward learning, social hierarchy, and pCREB signaling in adult male rats exposed to early-life adversity.

Adverse experiences during early life are known to disrupt neuronal development and maturation of reward circuits, affecting both social behavior and responses to reward-predicting stimuli. We have previously demonstrated that rats exposed during early life to denial of expected reward in the form of maternal contact (DER, animal model of maternal neglect) develop anhedonia, increased aggressive play-fighting behavior, aberrant prefrontal structure, reward system overactivation, deficient adult learning, and disturbed social dynamics during a group-based food anticipation (FA) learning task. Socialization processes within adolescents' relationships with parents and peers predicting couples' intimate partner violence in adulthood: A social learning perspective.

Previous studies have established that individual characteristics such as violent behavior, substance use, and high-risk sexual behavior, as well as negative relationships with parents and friends, are all risk factors for intimate partner violence (IPV). In this longitudinal prospective study, we investigated whether violent behavior, substance use, and high-risk sexual behavior in early adulthood (ages 22-23 years) mediated the link between family conflict and coercive relationship talk with friends in adolescence (ages 16-17 years) and dyadic IPV in adulthood (ages 28-30 years).
