INTRODUCTION: This study examines trends in social norms toward cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use among US youth during 2015-2021, focusing on descriptive interpersonal norms (friends' behavior) and injunctive norms at interpersonal (perceived important others' negative view) and societal level (perceived public disapproval).
METHODS: Respondents were youth aged 12 to 17 from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study of the United States, Wave 3 (2015-2016) to Wave 6 (2021). Logistic regression models that adjusted for demographics and participation effects assessed norm chang

Adolescent substance use is influenced by social support and social norms, which can be protective or risk-enhancing. This study analyzed survey data at baseline and 6-month follow-up from 919 adolescents attending schools on or near the Cherokee Nation Reservation. Generalized linear mixed-effects models assessed the influence of social support from parents/caregivers, teachers, community adults, and peers on alcohol and cannabis use with tests of moderation by injunctive and descriptive norms. Results revealed significant moderation in four of ten models. Parental support had stronger protec

Immunization remains a critical public health strategy, particularly in countries like Pakistan where vaccine-preventable diseases are prevalent despite global efforts to eradicate poliomyelitis. This study investigates the role of community engagement (CE) and conditional incentives in increasing polio vaccine uptake in High-Risk Union Councils (HRUCs) of Pakistan. Utilizing an exploratory qualitative research design, the study was conducted to assess the impact of an intervention which involved participatory CE, including the formation of Community Health Committees (CHCs) that conducted com

BACKGROUND: Inequalities in food allocation related to social norms among household members significantly affect the nutritional status and well-being of the vulnerable members of the household, such as adolescent girls. This study assesses the association between social norms related to intrahousehold food allocation and young adolescent girls' thinness.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 1,083 pairs of mothers/caregivers and young adolescent girls. Data were collected using a structured and pretested questionnaire. Multilevel mixed-effect logistic regression analysis was employed to

The objective of this paper is to address the scarcity of research on alcohol marketing exposure and underage drinking in sub-Saharan Africa. This study examines perceptions of alcohol advertisements and perceived peer, adult, and parental attitudes regarding alcohol use and intentions to drink among vulnerable youth. The Kampala Youth Survey is a cross-sectional study conducted in 2014 with service-seeking youth (ages 12-18 years) living in the slums of Kampala (n=1,134) who were participating in Uganda Youth Development Link drop-in centers. Survey measures assessed perceptions of alcohol ad

BACKGROUND: Physical discipline is associated with negative developmental, social, and emotional outcomes in children. However, social influences on caregivers' use of physical discipline, including perceived norms and social network exposure, remain understudied.
OBJECTIVES: To assess whether caregivers' use of physical discipline was associated with perceived norms and social network exposure to physical discipline.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Adult caregivers (N = 1026) in rural Uganda.
METHODS: In this sociocentric study, participants reported their past-week use of physical discipline an

People who deviate from social norms often face negative consequences such as exclusion, loneliness, or impaired wellbeing. While previous research has focused on consequences for specific minority groups, we know little about experiences of deviating from the norm in the general population, and about consequences and remedies that people perceive thereof. To fill these gaps, we conducted 62 qualitative in-depth interviews with young adults ages 18-30 years --- an age group that seems relatively sensitive to norm deviations. As social norms and sanctions vary cross-culturally, we sampled from

The purpose of the present study was to examine (1) differences in descriptive and injunctive norms for alcohol, cannabis, and co-use, (2) whether descriptive and injunctive norms for alcohol, cannabis, and co-use were associated with co-use frequency, and (3) whether co-use descriptive and injunctive norms were associated with co-use consequences. Participants were 209 college students who were required to have engaged in only alcohol, only cannabis, and co-use in the past year. Participants completed an online survey about their substance use. For Aim 1, participants held the strongest descr

Sexual harassment is pervasive worldwide, yet there is a lack of clarity on its conceptualization in many settings, especially in low-income countries. Context-specific conceptualization of sexual harassment is vital to develop effective measurement tools, estimate its magnitude, and the design of interventions to address it. We explored how different population groups in Mwanza, Tanzania, understood, conceptualized, and experienced sexual harassment. This study employed a qualitative research design involving 74 in-depth interviews and 13 focus group discussions with participants from educati

Social identification and group norms have been identified as key social psychological determinants of engagement in protective public health behaviours, such as social distancing, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing upon both social identity and balanced identity theories, the research tests the utility of a Social Identity Model of Behavioural Associations (SIMBA)-which proposes reciprocal, interactive associations among self-group, group-behaviour and self-behaviour concepts-for the measurement of British national identification, group norms and social distancing behaviour at t

Across low-and-middle income countries, adolescents navigate social environments where norms shape their opportunities and life trajectories. Faith actors are deeply embedded within these systems and often influence expectations related to communication, sexuality, reproductive health, and marriage. While faith engagement is widely recognized as important for sustainable change, empirical evidence on how faith actors contribute to social norm change remains limited. This paper presents findings from a 2024 scoping review of peer-reviewed and grey literature (2014-2024) examining how faith acto

INTRODUCTION: Despite the expansion of the No and Low (NoLo) alcohol market (drinks from 0.0% to 1.2% ABV) in the United Kingdom and other contexts, knowledge of how/why these products are used remains limited. This paper addresses gaps in understanding, exploring how NoLos are used by consumers to feel included and/or 'pass' as drinkers in social settings.
METHODS: This paper presents data from a small-scale UK study involving 15 in-depth interviews with NoLo consumers.
RESULTS: The paper identifies three key themes. 'Inclusion, blending in and drinking rituals' explores how NoLos supported

This study examines which types of perceived social norms are strongly associated with professional mental health help-seeking (PMHS), and whether and how such associations are moderated by evaluative identification among college students. We conducted an online survey with 638 Korean adults. Results show that general college students' perceived injunctive norms (β = .37, p < .001) have the strongest associations with intentions, followed by close friends' perceived descriptive norms (β = .22, p < .001). Also, there was a significant positive interaction between perceived injunctive norms amon

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tobacco use spreads through social networks influencing social norms around tobacco use. However, the social norms scholarship is extremely diverse and occasionally conflicting, complicating efforts to understand how best to leverage social norms to reduce tobacco use. This study systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed this vast terrain by focusing on social norms measurement and mechanism, and intervention effectiveness and modality aimed at changing social norms around tobacco use and actual tobacco use.
METHODS: We searched Scopus, PubMed, PsycInfo, Clinicaltrials.go

Background: Criminal problem-solving and dependency courts set treatment standards for opioid use disorder (OUD) but sometimes prohibit or limit utilization of medications for OUD (MOUD). Court staff beliefs about MOUD inform court treatment policies. Court staff MOUD policies may also be influenced by social norms, meaning perceptions of opinions of other individuals/entities about MOUD, including opinions of fellow staff in their court, staff in other courts, the state supreme court, other state agencies, the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP), federal agencies, and loc

Most adolescents experience cyberhate primarily as bystanders. Understanding their behavior, particularly their defending behaviors, is crucial to mitigate the phenomenon and its negative effects. While prior studies have explored factors influencing these responses, further research is needed to understand how these factors interact within robust theoretical frameworks. To address this gap, this study examined adolescents' defending behaviors to cyberhate through three psychological theories: (1) the Theory of Normative Social Behavior (TNSB; social norms); (2) Social Learning Theory (SLT; so

INTRODUCTION: As an important carrier of cultural identity and community cohesion in rural Chinese society, traditional folk activities often generate tensions with modern ecological protection goals due to their resource-intensive characteristics. This study takes the millennium-old "Firecracker Lion Dance" activity in Deqing County, Guangdong Province, as a research case to explore how government environmental regulation influences farmers' willingness to participate in the Sustainable Firecracker-Lion Dance Custom, with a particular focus on the mediating roles of social norms and ecologica

BACKGROUND: Physical violence in child discipline remains a global issue. A recent survey in Burkina Faso revealed variations across socio-cultural contexts, yet the role of social norms and contextual factors remains insufficiently investigated.
OBJECTIVE: This study examines how social norms and contextual factors shape physical violence against girls and boys at the municipal level.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Nationally representative cross-sectional data on violence against children (2018) from 5098 girls and 5817 boys under age 12, reported by 4709 caregivers across 270 municipalities. C

This study examined the moderating role of descriptive and status norms in the stability of youth's antisocial behavior, and the link between initial antisocial behavior and the development of depressive symptoms over the course of one academic year, while controlling for initial depression levels. A total of 1081 students (51.06% girls; grades 4 through 6) in schools in low to average socio-economic status neighborhoods completed self-reports and a peer nomination inventory in the fall (T1) and spring (T2) of one year. Descriptive norms were operationalized as the classroom- and sex-specific

Timely disclosure and identification of concussion symptoms are essential to proper care. Perceived social norms are a potential driving factor in many health-related decisions. The study purpose was to describe concussion disclosure behaviours and identify the association between perceived social norms and these disclosure behaviours. First-year student-athletes (n = 391) at two NCAA institutions completed a cross-sectional survey about concussion disclosure and disclosure determinants. Log-binomial regression models identified factors associated with concussion disclosure behaviour prevalenc
