Exploring the therapeutic benefits of a community garden and nature-based project designed for people experiencing homelessness: A qualitative study.

People experiencing homelessness face profound health inequalities, including high rates of mental and physical illness, problematic substance use, injury and reduced life expectancy. While the therapeutic benefits of greenspace are established, research on nature-based interventions for this population remains limited. This study explores how a tailored green social prescribing programme delivered through a supervised community garden and nature-based activity project can improve wellbeing amongst people experiencing homelessness. The research was conducted at a primary care centre in Scotlan

The sociomateriality of prescribing feedback interventions: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Prescribing errors frequently threaten patient safety, with early career doctors writing most prescriptions. Prescribing feedback interventions can improve the prescribing capabilities of early career doctors. These typically involve interactions between people and materials; however, these relations tend to be under-researched due to a general focus on human behaviours. This study aimed to trace the sociomaterial relations that produce and sustain prescribing feedback interventions for early career doctors in hospital settings. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of eight data

'I'm Going to Put on Bright Clothes now': The Process and Social Dimensions of Resilience Among Older Adults.

This article focuses on older adults' resilience following major losses. Interviews of seventeen older adults in Ireland illuminate the resilience process and its social dimensions - family, friends, social participation, formal supports, faith and spirituality. Becoming resilient is a process that develops through agential resolve contextualized by utilization of available resources. Those who had struggled to see themselves as resilient benefited from formal supports - such as counseling and social prescribing - that helped them to engage resilient agency. The resilience process presents as

Anxiety in youth with and without specific learning disorders: exploring the relationships with inhibitory control, perfectionism, and self-conscious emotions.

INTRODUCTION: Since early research on Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), their relationship with emotional issues have been recognized, although emotional factors have received less attention compared to the cognitive processes related with academic achievement. METHODS: This study aimed to investigate mechanisms that may increase vulnerability to generalized and social anxiety in youth with SLD, compared to their non-diagnosed peers. We examined cognitive factors (inhibitory control), personality traits (self-oriented, socially prescribed perfectionism), and self-conscious emotions (shame, g

Can behavioural science be used to understand factors that influence the prescription choice for Parkinson's disease? A pan-European focus group study of clinicians' prescribing practice.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to establish a consensus on key factors that influence medication choices for Parkinson's disease and to identify the behavioural determinants of these factors using behavioural change theory as a theoretical lens. DESIGN: This qualitative study used the nominal group technique to conduct structured online focus group meetings. A facilitator guided participants to (1) individually generate a list of factors that influence their decision to prescribe, (2) collectively share these factors, (3) refine and clarify factors and (4) rank the most important factors. Factors influencing access to green health prescribing in primary care for older adults - a qualitative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Green health prescribing (GHP) refers to nature-based interventions (NBIs) prescribed by a clinician or qualified health or social care professional. Given the ageing global population and increasing care needs posing severe challenges for healthcare systems, GHP has emerged as a potentially effective and efficient scheme to support healthy ageing in older people living with long-term conditions. This evidence review aimed to identify the barriers and enablers to access, uptake, implementation and delivery of GHP and associated NBIs. METHODS: We undertook a systematic review of qu

Surgeons' views of peer comparison and guideline-based feedback on postsurgery opioid prescriptions: a qualitative investigation.

BACKGROUND: Excess opioid prescribing after surgery can lead to prolonged opioid use and diversion. We interviewed surgeons who were part of a three-group cluster-randomised controlled trial aimed at reducing prescribed opioid quantities after surgery via two versions of a monthly emailed behavioural 'nudge' (messages encouraging but not mandating compliance with social norms and clinical guidelines around prescribing) at the end of the implementation year in order to understand surgeons' reasoning for changing or continuing their prescribing behaviour as a result of the intervention and the c

It's in the water: A qualitative exploration of the perceived effects of outdoor open water swimming on swimmers' psychological well-being.

Outdoor swimming for both leisure and physical exercise is a fast-growing activity in the United Kingdom. However, research into the perceived effects of outdoor open water swimming on psychological well-being is limited. Considering the inherent combination of physical activity, leisure, and nature immersion, the notion of outdoor swimming as a potential activity in the social prescribing initiative to enhance psychological well-being was investigated. Guided by Ryff's (1989) six core dimensions of psychological well-being, ten swimmers who frequently swim recreationally in the sea (n = 5) or

Supporting access to activities to enhance well-being and reduce social isolation in people living with motor neurone disease.

PURPOSE: People living with Motor Neurone Disease (plwMND) have emphasised the importance of psychological support and well-being in helping them manage their condition. Social prescribing is a formal process of referring patients with largely socioeconomic and psychosocial issues to a link worker to co-design a plan to improve their health and well-being. Intervention involves supporting engagement in meaningful activities based within the individual's local community. This pilot project aimed to explore the application of social prescribing with plwMND. METHODS: A cohort of plwMND were supp

Patterns of regional variation of opioid prescribing in primary care in England: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Opioids are a widely prescribed class of drug with potentially harmful short-term and long-term side effects. There are concerns about the amounts of these drugs being prescribed in England given that they are increasingly considered ineffective in the context of long-term non-cancer pain, which is one of the major reasons for their prescription. AIM: To assess the amount and type of opioids prescribed in primary care in England, and patterns of regional variation in prescribing. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective observational study using publicly available government data from v

Using virtual reality urban greenness with peer support to reduce stress and enhance social connection in older adults with mild depression: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Virtual reality (VR) urban greenspace (UGS) presents an innovative strategy to enhance the mental well-being of older individuals in urban environments. However, knowledge regarding the design of VR UGS interventions to effectively reduce stress among older adults while fostering social connections remains unclear. We conducted a 3-arm cluster-randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a social prescribing model in reducing stress and enhancing social connection among older people with mild depressive symptoms. A survey of the criteria for prescribing in cases of borderline refractive errors.

PURPOSE: This research investigated the reported optometric prescribing criteria of Israeli optometrists. METHODS: An online questionnaire based on previous studies was distributed via email and social networking sites to optometrists in Israel. The questionnaire surveyed the level of refractive error at which respondents would prescribe for different types of refractive error at various ages with and without symptoms. RESULTS: 124 responses were obtained, yielding a response rate of approximately 12-22%, 92% of whom had trained in Israel. For all refractive errors, the presence of symptoms

GLP-1 Receptor Agonists in Dermatology: Ethical Considerations.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have generated growing interest in dermatology for their potential anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects on skin disease, in addition to their metabolic benefits. As their use expands beyond established indications for type 2 diabetes and obesity, important ethical challenges have emerged. This review explores the ethical considerations surrounding GLP-1 RA use in dermatology through the principles of autonomy, beneficence, non maleficence, and justice. Notable issues include disparities in access and affordability, compounded form

Early discontinuation of antidepressants in general practice: association with patient and prescriber characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Most antidepressant treatment is initiated and continued in general practice but, despite current guidelines, treatment duration is often short among patients with depression. Discontinuation may, however, be caused by a complexity of factors, but so far research has focused on drug effects, adverse effects and drug regimens. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to analyse whether early discontinuation of first-time antidepressant treatment in general practice may be predicted by (i) social position and psychiatric history of the patient; and (ii) demography, practice activity and the general p

Factors contributing to medication safety incidents observed by community pharmacists - a content analysis of incident reports.

BACKGROUND: Medication errors pose a risk to outpatient medication safety. Community pharmacists play a central role in medication safety; however, their contribution to risk management in social and healthcare settings is less studied. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore factors identified by community pharmacists contributing to medication errors originating outside pharmacies. It aims to show how community pharmacies can collaborate with social and healthcare organisations to enhance medication safety. METHODS: Medication safety incident reports from three wellbeing services counties i

Medications, Medicating, and Medicated-When, Where, and How-Opioids and Others.

Medication therapy emerged as a theme for this issue-from many perspectives and for different conditions. We have several articles on opioids, including for pain/noncancer pain; use by older drivers and their reported driving; and the advantages of family medicine treatment sites. A related article explores chronic widespread pain and concurrent low back pain. In addition, this issue covers the gamut of prescribing inappropriate medications for older individuals and prescribing antibiotics when a CT scan of the abdomen would not have found an indication for such treatment. Impact of a Cultural Heritage Therapy Programme on the Mental Health of People Living With a Mental Illness; a Mixed Methods Evaluation Incorporating Economic Evaluation Methods.

BACKGROUND: Mental illness is a significant public health issue; with increasing prevalence, alongside associated co-morbidities and social exclusion. Social prescribing schemes, including those using cultural heritage resources, play an increasingly part in addressing this, yet the evidence-base underpinning them is weak with few long-term evaluations of health impact. Furthermore, there are, to our knowledge, no studies which include exploration of health and care resource use as part of evaluations of cultural heritage therapy programmes (CHTPs). OBJECTIVES: The aim of the Scaling-up Human

Perspectives of Chinese nurses on the feasibility of nurse prescription authority in palliative care: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care is an essential component of quality nursing, addressing patients’ comprehensive physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. However, the lack of prescribing authority for palliative care nurses in China leads to delays or inconveniences in palliative care services, thereby compromising the quality of end-of-life care. Therefore, we conducted a qualitative study to explore the perspectives and feasibility of implementing nurse prescribing authority among Chinese palliative care nurses or nursing managers. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted
