The Effect of Educational Interventions on Willingness to Work with Older Adults: A Comparison of Students of Social Work and Health Professions.

The study examined the effect of an educational intervention on the willingness of Israeli social work students to work with older adults, comparing them to students of nursing, speech therapy, and physiotherapy. A sample of 187 first-year students were divided into two groups: a research group (n=83) exposed to an educational intervention on ageing, and a control group (n=104) that received no intervention of any kind. Following the intervention, ageism among social work students in the research group decreased and positive behavior toward older adults increased. No significant differences we

Working conditions, mental health and coping of staff in social work with refugees and homeless individuals: A scoping review.

The refugee and homeless population has been increasing worldwide in recent years. Staff in social work provide practical help to these populations, but often struggle with high job demands. This scoping review aims to systematically map the job demands, resources, mental health problems, coping strategies and needs of staff in social work with refugees and homeless individuals. Relevant studies were identified by searching seven electronic databases from their inception until the end of May 2018, as well as Google Scholar and reference lists of included articles. The methodological quality of

Working memory in social anxiety disorder: better manipulation of emotional versus neutral material in working memory.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) engage in post-event processing, a form of perseverative thinking. Given that deficits in working memory might underlie perseverative thinking, we examined working memory in SAD with a particular focus on the effects of stimulus valence. SAD (n = 31) and healthy control (n = 20) participants either maintained (forward trials) or reversed (backward trials) in working memory the order of four emotional or four neutral pictures, and we examined sorting costs, which reflect the extent to which performance deteriorated on the backward trials compared t

Redefining holistic care for gynecologic hereditary cancer syndromes through universal social work referrals.

PURPOSE: Individuals with hereditary cancer syndromes often experience unique psychosocial challenges that may not be fully addressed in routine clinical care. Support with communicating genetic risk to family, coordinating complex medical care, and managing distress may enhance emotional well-being and improve engagement in recommended cancer prevention strategies. Incorporating social work services into gynecologic hereditary cancer care may address these unmet needs and promote a more comprehensive, patient-centered care model. METHODS: From April through September 2024, all patients with

Tensions between institutional and professional frames in team talk in gerontological social work.

Team meetings are central to social workers' decision-making practices. These meetings often function as a forum for collegial consultations, when applications are processed and recommendations on decisions are discussed. In this paper, we present findings from a case study on team talk and decision-making practices in gerontological social work. The data come from a body of material gathered within the framework of a larger project covering the process of assessing elder care for older persons in three Swedish municipalities. The case concerns an application, due to homelessness, from a coupl

The Social Psychology of Work: How Digital Leadership Shapes Innovative Identity of Employees.

The increasing use of emerging technological tools has enabled organizations across various industries to transform their work processes. While a recent body of literature offers a holistic understanding of the conducive outcomes of digital leadership on organizational work efficiency and performance of employees, a lack of understanding exists regarding how employees experience socio-psychological change experiences while working in a digital work environment. Hence, this research has integrated a social identity perspective to unveil a process linking digital leadership with innovative ident

Modernizing Student Housing in Urban Communities: A Social Work and Public Health Perspective.

Safe, accessible, and affordable student housing is vital for student success, influencing academic achievement, mental health, and community stability. Many urban colleges rely on substandard facilities that often fail low-income, first-generation, and minority students. This commentary argues that student housing should function as both a preventive health strategy and a means of promoting social justice. By examining mixed-use redevelopment models at Florida A&M University and Howard University, the paper demonstrates how design and collaboration-including social work advocacy-can create in

Planning For Unmet Social Needs In Pandemics: Teachers' Experiences Of Unacknowledged Care Work.

This paper examines the experiences of teachers in Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic from a care ethics perspective. While pandemic preparedness plans prioritised continuity of services and infection control, they failed to anticipate the relational and moral labour required of frontline workers in non-clinical roles. Paradoxically, otherwise prudent and precautionary responses to the risks posed by the pandemic established new barriers to care and human connection and exacerbated existing ones. Drawing on 32 qualitative interviews with teachers, we analyse how they engaged in improvised,

Psychosocial work factors and social inequalities in psychological distress: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems (MHP) are the leading cause of disability worldwide. The inverse association between socioeconomic position (SEP) and MHP has been well documented. There is prospective evidence that factors from the work environment, including adverse psychosocial work factors, could contribute to the development of MHP including psychological distress. However, the contribution of psychosocial work factors to social inequalities in MHP remains unclear. This study evaluates the contribution of psychosocial work factors from two highly supported models, the Demand-Control-Sup

Stressful encounters with social work clients: a descriptive account based on critical incidents.

This article presents the findings of an analysis of 130 critical incidents reported by social workers in Israel. Almost all the incidents turned out to be upsetting events that caused the writers a great deal of pain, frustration, and self-doubt. Content analysis yielded four main categories of incidents or events: (1) client hostility and aggression toward the worker, (2) client behaviors that violated the unwritten rules of the profession or the workers' expectations, (3) inherent professional dilemmas, and (4) workers' personal issues. Although the events may not be typical of worker-clien

Maltreated children's thoughts and emotions as behavioral predictors: evidence for social work action.

The purpose of this secondary data analysis was to explore the mediating influence of internalizing behavior on the link between child maltreatment and externalizing behavior (for example, rule-breaking behavior and aggressive behavior) among children. Using a longitudinal comparison group design and a sample of 300 youths (56 percent maltreated), the relationship among maltreatment and internalizing and externalizing behavior was explored. Structural equation modeling revealed a mediating effect in which initial internalizing symptoms had a longitudinal residual effect on externalizing behavi

On the basis of clinico-epidemiological, clinico-dynamic and clinico-catamnestic study of 184 patients with schizoaffective variants of schizophrenia (cyclothymia-like, affective-paranoid, hallucinatory-delirious, and with catatonic symptomatology) the authors come to the conclusion on the relative homogeneity of this cohort of patients and on the considerably frequent favourable outcomes of this disease. The variants of the disease and structure of remissions of each of the clinical variants have been compared. Assessment of inter-attack clinical characteristics and the degree of social and o
