Heterogeneous patterns of maternal emotion socialization and their association with maternal depression and maltreatment history: A person-centered approach.

BACKGROUND: The influence of parent's emotion-related socialization behaviors (ERSBs) on children, and predictors of such ERSBs has been studied extensively. However, to our knowledge, no study used a person-centered approach for subtyping the parental ERSB patterns and identifying parental characteristics that could discriminate the patterns. OBJECTIVES: The present study explored establishing heterogeneous maternal ERSBs and confirmed whether mothers' depression and maltreatment experienced in childhood are predictive of the subtypes. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: In Korean, 695 mothers of 7-1

Family socialization of adolescent's self-reported cigarette use: the role of parents' history of regular smoking and parenting style.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the main and interactive effects of parental history of regular cigarette smoking and parenting style on adolescent self-reported cigarette use. METHODS: Predictors of adolescent self-reported cigarette use, including parents' history of regular cigarette smoking and two dimensions of parenting behavior, were analyzed in a sample of 934 predominately Caucasian (96.3%) parent-adolescent dyads. Families were drawn from the control group of a randomized control trial aimed at preventing adolescent substance use. RESULTS: In addition to the main effects of parents' history

[Social psychiatry as a social science].

Social Psychiatry mostly is perceived as social epidemiology. But other branches of sociology and social psychology have influenced its history as well, e.g. family sociology and the sociology of institutions. Recently, research in family milieu and social environment has gained some importance. It is demonstrated how research in social psychiatry follows developments in other social sciences.

Cultural Strength Mechanisms: Family Ethnic Socialization, Ethnic Identity, Familism Links to Rural US Latino/a Youth Prosocial Behaviors Across Time.

INTRODUCTION: Cultural strength-based models propose that family ethnic socialization promotes prosocial development in Latino/a youth through cultural values such as ethnic identity and familism. However, longitudinal research testing these serial pathways remains scarce, and prosocial behavior is understudied in rural, emerging immigrant destinations where adversity is heightened, and prosocial behaviors may be differentially shaped. This study examined whether ethnic identity exploration, commitment, and familism at Time 2 sequentially mediate the associations between family ethnic socializ

Does parental racial socialization protect Black youth from the impact of racism on problematic substance use over the long term?

OBJECTIVES: Parental racial socialization refers to the messages children receive about race from their parents. Little is known about parental racial socialization's long-term impact on problematic substance use or whether it can protect against adversities commonly experienced by Black Americans. We examined whether parental racial socialization reduces the risk of problematic substance use and buffers the impact of neighborhood disadvantage and racial discrimination on problematic substance use, with attention to the types of messaging. METHOD: Data are from a sample (n = 825) of the Woodl

Negative emotion dynamics during exam weeks mediate the link between parental emotional socialization and psychological symptoms in Chinese late adolescents.

Investigating adolescents' dynamic emotional responses to stressors is critical in understanding how their psychological symptoms develop. However, prior research has primarily examined either adolescents' emotional reactions to daily stressors or major life events. This study bridges this gap by focusing on exams-a naturalistic, high-stakes, and common stressor-and how parental emotional socialization shapes late adolescents' dynamic emotional experiences during exams and subsequent psychological symptoms. Participants were 216 Chinese late adolescents (Mage = 19.11 years, SD = 0.95 years; 80

Exploring personal, community, and societal conditions associated with South Korean new graduate nurses' organizational socialization: a cross-sectional survey study.

BACKGROUND: Organizational socialization is a significant factor in new graduate nurses' transition from students to professional nursing roles. However, there is a lack of understanding about the impact of external influences such as community and societal conditions. This study aimed to examine personal, community, and societal conditions on the organizational socialization of new graduate nurses. METHODS: New graduate nurses with two years or less experience at South Korean national university-affiliated hospitals participated in the survey. The main outcome variable was organizational soc

Socialization processes within adolescents' relationships with parents and peers predicting couples' intimate partner violence in adulthood: A social learning perspective.

Previous studies have established that individual characteristics such as violent behavior, substance use, and high-risk sexual behavior, as well as negative relationships with parents and friends, are all risk factors for intimate partner violence (IPV). In this longitudinal prospective study, we investigated whether violent behavior, substance use, and high-risk sexual behavior in early adulthood (ages 22-23 years) mediated the link between family conflict and coercive relationship talk with friends in adolescence (ages 16-17 years) and dyadic IPV in adulthood (ages 28-30 years). Relationships between the social communication questionnaire and pragmatic language, socialization skills, and behavioral problems in children with autism spectrum disorders.

The Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) is one of the most widely used screening instruments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study examined the relationships between the reciprocal social interaction, communication, and repetitive/stereotyped factors on the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and pragmatic, socialization, and behavioral problems in children with ASD and children with typical development (TD). Participants were seven- to 11-year-old children with ASD without intellectual disability (n = 52) and with TD (n = 37). The two groups were matched on age and int

Measuring emotion socialization in families affected by pediatric cancer: Refinement and reduction of the Parents' Beliefs about Children's Emotions questionnaire.

The aim of this study is to conduct a multimethod psychometric reduction in the Parents' Beliefs about Children's Emotions (PBCE) questionnaire using an item response theory framework with a pediatric oncology sample. Participants were 216 pediatric oncology caregivers who completed the PBCE. The PBCE contains 105 items (11 subscales) rated on a 6-point Likert-type scale. We evaluated the PBCE subscale performance by applying a partial credit model in WINSTEPS. Sixty-six statistically weak items were removed, creating a 44-item PBCE questionnaire with 10 subscales and 3 response options per it

Social spatial cognition: social distance dynamics as an identifier of social interactions.

We suggest that socio-spatial behavior, which is an interaction between social and spatial cognition, can be viewed as a set of excursions that originate and end in close proximity to another individual(s). We present an extension of earlier studies that perceived spatial behavior in individual animals as a series of excursions originating from a particular location. We measured here the momentary distance between two individuals (social distance) to differentiate among eight possible types of social excursion originating in a state of proximity between excursion-participants. The defined excu

Evolution and social anxiety. The role of attraction, social competition, and social hierarchies.

If human social anxiety is not predominately about the fear of physical injury or attack, as it is in other animals, then, to understand human social anxiety (i.e., fear of evaluation), it is necessary to consider why certain types of relationships are so important. Why do humans need to court the good feelings of others and fear not doing so? And why, when people wish to appear attractive to others (e.g., to make friends, date a desired sexual partner, or give a good presentation), do some people become so overwhelmed with anxiety that they behave submissively and fearfully (which can be seen

Parental Socialization of Academic Failure and Adolescent School Burnout: The Mediating Role of Failure Mindset and Moderating Role of Learning Orientations.

School burnout is an important developmental concern during adolescence, yet less is known about the role of parent socialization, particularly in response to adolescent academic failure, in the development of school burnout over time. More specifically, limited research has examined how different forms of parental failure socialization contribute to adolescents' failure-related mindsets and how adolescents' own learning motivations may condition these associations. Using three-wave longitudinal data from 806 Chinese parent-adolescent dyads (Adolescents: Mage = 13.92 years, SD = 0.66; 53% fema

Patterns of Associations Between Maternal Symptoms and Child Problem Behaviors: The Mediating Role of Mentalization, Negative Intentionality, and Unsupportive Emotion Socialization.

We examined how maternal depression, anxiety, hostility, mentalization, negative intentionality (NI), and unsupportive emotion socialization (UES) predict child internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors (CIEPB). Mothers (N = 537) of toddlers (Mage = 23.26 months, Range 10-44 months) completed the Brief Symptom Inventory, the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire, the Infant Intentionality Questionnaire, the Coping with Children's Negative Emotions Scale, and the Child Behavior Checklist. All maternal symptoms negatively predicted mentalization and positively predicted NI, UES,

The Impact of Prior Activity History on the Influence of Restricted Repetitive Behaviors on Socialization for Children With High-Functioning Autism.

Research has demonstrated that incorporating restricted interests of an individual with autism into recess activities is effective at increasing socialization with typically developing peers. However, certain activity contexts may alter the reinforcing influence of the restricted repetitive behaviors (RRBs) depending on an individual's history in that activity. Using an alternating treatment design, this study examined whether an individual's history with an activity affected socialization. RRBs were embedded into activities with a reported positive history (i.e., prior history of positive exp

Social diversity and social cohesion in Britain.

We use data from a large-scale and nationally representative survey to examine whether there is in Britain a trade-off between social diversity and social cohesion. Using six separate measures of social cohesion (generalised trust, volunteering, giving to charity, inter-ethnic friendship, and two neighbourhood cohesion scales) and four measures of social diversity (ethnic fractionalisation, religious fractionalisation, percentage Muslim, and percentage foreign-born), we show that, net of individual covariates, there is a negative association between social diversity and most measures of social

MDMA: a social drug in a social context.

RATIONALE: The drug ±3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "ecstasy," "molly") is thought to produce prosocial effects and enhance social interaction. However, in most laboratory studies to date, the participants have been tested under nonsocial conditions, which may not simulate the effects the drug produces in more naturalistic social settings. METHODS: Healthy experienced MDMA users participated in three laboratory sessions in which they received MDMA (0.5 or 1.0 mg/kg or placebo, double blind). They were randomly assigned to one of three social conditions, in which they were tested alo
