Psychological and cultural factors influencing antibiotic prescription.

Humans have inundated the environment worldwide with antimicrobials for about one century, giving selective advantage to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Therefore, antibiotic resistance has become a public health problem responsible for increased mortality and extended hospital stays because the efficacy of antibiotics has diminished. Hospitals and other clinical settings have implemented stewardship measures to reduce antibiotic administration and prescription. However, these measures demand multifactorial approaches, including multidisciplinary teams in clinical settings and the education of

Assessing heterogeneity in factors influencing three-wheeled motorized rickshaws crash outcomes between weekdays and weekends.

Traffic crashes involving three-wheeled motorized rickshaws (3-WMRs) pose considerable public health risk in developing countries. Although prior research has thoroughly investigated the effects of risk factors such as weather, road conditions, and driver characteristics on 3-WMR collisions, the effect of the day of the week (weekday versus weekend) has been relatively underexplored. The study uniquely identifies the temporal heterogeneity in 3-WMR injury severity risk factors between weekday and weekend crashes. By integrating psychological and sociological theories, it also aims to understan

Factors associated with delayed onset of regular respiration.

In a population of 16333 singleton births born in one week of April, 1970, 4.4% failed to establish regular respiration within 3 min of birth. A follow-up at 5 years of age collected medical, educational and sociological information on 79.6% of the survivors of the cohort identified by the birth survey. Data have been analysed to investigate the relationships between the delay in the onset of regular respiration and possible risk factors identifiable prior to or at the time of birth. Complex statistical analysis employing linear modelling techniques showed that the delay in the onset of respir

[The role of parents and school personnel in the organization of an early educational period in children].

The sociological study conducted in the Gorod Polevskoy, Sverdlovsk Region, has established that the prevalence of maladaptation was 22.3% in children after entering the first form. The major risk factors affecting the severity of an adaptive process are a history of diseases before going to school, nonattendance of organized pediatric collective bodies, disregarding the day regimen and a poor organization of a workplace, bad parental hygienic knowledge. Efforts aimed at preparing parents to organize a child's life in the first form are insufficient and their own steps are inadequate. The pare

Prevalence and predictors of complementary and alternative medicine modalities in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) can interact with antiviral treatment or influence health-seeking behaviour. We aimed to study the use of individual CAM modalities in CHB and explore determinants of use, particularly migration-related, socio-economic and clinical factors. METHODS: A total of 436 CHB outpatients who attended the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease in 2015-2016 were included in this cross-sectional study. Using the comprehensive I-CAM questionnaire and health records, data were collected on socio

Profile and pattern of crack consumption among inpatients in a Brazilian psychiatric hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Crack cocaine use is associated with polydrug abuse, and inpatients dependent on crack exhibit profiles of serious consumption patterns. Use of alcohol and tobacco and other drugs is a risk factor for experimentation of additional drugs, including crack cocaine. OBJECTIVES: The present study describes the characteristics and crack consumption patterns among inpatients in treatment during 2011 and 2012 at the Hospital Psiquiátrico São Pedro (Porto Alegre, Brazil). An additional objective was to identify the sequence of alcohol and tobacco consumption prior to crack use. METHODS:

Social Ecological Factors of Sexual Subjectivity and Contraceptive Use and Access Among Young Women in the Northwest Territories, Canada.

Adolescent women in the Northwest Territories (NWT), Canada, experience many sexual health challenges that are linked to a history of colonization and intergenerational effects of trauma. This study was informed by social ecological theory and explored how young women in the NWT develop sexual subjectivity within the context of contraception use and access during this time of decolonization. A total of 41 participants (aged 13 to 17 years) attended the Fostering Open eXpression among Youth (FOXY) body-mapping intervention in six NWT communities and then completed semistructured interviews. Presbycusis and balance disorders in the elderly. Bibliographical review of ethiopathogenic aspects, consequences on quality of life and positive effects of its treatment.

At this time, we still do not have adequate knowledge and awareness of the consequences of hearing loss in the elderly on quality of life. Similarly, there is also insufficient information on the relationship of presbycusis and balance disorders with other comorbidities. Such knowledge can contribute to improve both prevention and treatment of these pathologies, to reduce their impact on other areas such as cognition or autonomy, as well as to have more accurate information on the economic impact they generate in society and in the health system. Therefore, with this review article we aim to u

Insights into Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in Connective Tissue Diseases.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe complication associated with connective tissue diseases (CTDs), which is characterized by a significant influence on the patient's prognosis and mortality. The prevalence of PAH varies depending on the type of CTD. Still, it is highly prevalent in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), and primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Identifying rheumatic disease-specific risk factors is crucial for early diagnosis and intervention. Risk factors for PAH development include specif
