A Meta-Analysis on Quantitative Sodium, Potassium and Chloride Metabolism in Horses and Ponies.

The goal of this meta-analysis was to (i) identify any potential differences in the apparent and true digestibility, renal excretion, and retention between ponies and horses and (ii) examine the impact of work on these parameters. Additionally, the study aimed to (iii) evaluate the effects of water deficiency. This meta-analysis used data from 33 studies and plotted them in diagrams similar to the Lucas test against mineral intake. Three studies involved ponies that were later diagnosed with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). These were compared with other data to identify quantitat

Estimation of sodium and chloride storage in critically ill patients: a balance study.

BACKGROUND: Nonosmotic sodium storage has been reported in animals, healthy individuals and patients with hypertension, hyperaldosteronism and end-stage kidney disease. Sodium storage has not been studied in ICU patients, who frequently receive large amounts of sodium chloride-containing fluids. The objective of our study was to estimate sodium that cannot be accounted for by balance studies in critically ill patients. Chloride was also studied. We used multiple scenarios and assumptions for estimating sodium and chloride balances. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients admitted to the

Identification of the Causes for Chronic Hypokalemia: Importance of Urinary Sodium and Chloride Excretion.

BACKGROUND: Uncovering the correct diagnosis of chronic hypokalemia with potassium (K+) wasting from the kidneys or gut can be fraught with challenges. We identified clinical and laboratory parameters helpful for differentiating the causes of chronic hypokalemia. METHODS: Normotensive patients referred to our tertiary academic medical center for the evaluation of chronic hypokalemia were prospectively enrolled over 5 years. Clinical features, laboratory examinations-including blood and spot urine electrolytes, acid-base status, biochemistries, and hormones-as well as genetic analysis, were de

Treatment of hyponatremic encephalopathy with a 3% sodium chloride protocol: a case series.

BACKGROUND: 3% sodium chloride solution is the accepted treatment for hyponatremic encephalopathy, but evidence-based guidelines for its use are lacking. STUDY DESIGN: A case series. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Adult patients presenting to the emergency department of a university hospital with hyponatremic encephalopathy, defined as serum sodium level < 130 mEq/L with neurologic symptoms of increased intracranial pressure without other apparent cause, and treated with a continuous infusion of 500mL of 3% sodium chloride solution over 6 hours through a peripheral vein. PREDICTORS: Hyponatremic e

Effect of hibernation on sodium and chloride ion transport in isolated frog skin.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of hibernation on electrophysiological parameters of isolated frog skin under control incubation (Ringer solution) and after inhibition of Na+ and CI- transepithelial transport by application of amiloride and bumetanide. The transepithelial electrical potential difference (PD in mV) was measured before and after mechanical stimulation of isolated frog skin. The tissues were mounted in a modified Ussing chamber. The results revealed a reduced PD of frog skin during hibernation. In February, as compared with November, PD of frog skin incubated in R

Impaired intestinal sodium and chloride transport in the blind loop syndrome of the rat.

Self-filling blind loops of rat jejunum were used as a model for the blind loop syndrome in humans. Electrical resistance, short circuit current, and unidirectional sodium and chloride fluxes were measured using the Ussing technique. Whereas net fluxes for sodium and chloride did not differ significantly from zero in the blind loop or in the control, unidirectional fluxes of either direction were decreased and electrical resistance was increased, indicating an increase in the tightness of the intestinal wall. Measurements of alternating current impedance and micropuncture experiments revealed

Effects of tryptamine on active sodium and chloride transport in the isolated bullfrog cornea.

The effects of the serotonin analogue, tryptamine, on the active transepithelial transport of Na+ and Cl- in the in vitro bullfrog cornea were studied. Tryptamine, 1 mM, inhibited both the short-circuit current (Isc) and potential difference (PD) of corneas transporting either Na+ alone or both Na+ and Cl-. The electrical resistance, R, increased in all cases. Both unidirectional Na+ and Cl- fluxes were decreased by tryptamine and these changes accounted for the inhibitory effects on the Isc. The effects of tryptamine were considered along with those of 2 mM theophylline and 0.1 mM ouabain. Tr

The effects of elevated levels of sodium chloride on ascites and related problems in turkeys.

The response of young poults to diets containing 0.7, 1.2, 1.7 and 2.7 per cent sodium chloride was studied. Water intake, feed intake and wieght gain were not significantly influenced by treatment. Only the highest level caused a significant increase in mortality. Ascites was not a consistent finding even on high levels of salt. A straight line best described the response but confidence limits were large and this was also true for heart, kidney and lung lesions. Lesions showing myocardial distension with pericardial adhesions, severe congestion of the lungs and enlarged pale kidneys seemed mo

Elevated Cerebrospinal Fluid Sodium and Chloride Levels in a Saltwater Drowning Death.

To ascribe a cause of death from drowning in a body immersed in water can be difficult because of the absence of specific postmortem findings and unreliable ancillary tests. Postmortem vitreous biochemical analysis is documented to be a useful adjunct ancillary test to aid the diagnosis of saltwater drowning. A major confounding factor in using postmortem vitreous is the effect of electrolyte diffusion and water osmosis during immersion. A recent animal study suggested that cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biochemical analysis, which is unaffected by immersion, may be an alternative. However, to date

Inhibition of the Sodium-Potassium-Chloride Cotransporter Isoform-1 reduces glioma invasion.

Malignant gliomas metastasize throughout the brain by infiltrative cell migration into peritumoral areas. Invading cells undergo profound changes in cell shape and volume as they navigate extracellular spaces along blood vessels and white matter tracts. Volume changes are aided by the concerted release of osmotically active ions, most notably K(+) and Cl(-). Their efflux through ion channels along with obligated water causes rapid cell shrinkage. Suitable ionic gradients must be established and maintained through the activity of ion transport systems. Here, we show that the Sodium-Potassium-Ch

The sodium-chloride difference: A marker of prognosis in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: The difference between serum sodium and chloride ion concentrations (SCD) may be considered as a surrogate of a strong ion difference and may help to identify patients with a worse prognosis. We aimed to assess SCD as an early prognostic marker among patients with myocardial infarction. METHODS: Data of 594 consecutive patients with acute myocardial infarction treated with PCI (44.9% STEMI patients; 70.7% males) was analysed for SCD in relation to their 30-day mortality. A restricted cubic spline regression model was used to study the relationship between mortality and SCD. Cox re

Identification and characterization of the Fasciola hepatica sodium- and chloride-dependent taurine transporter.

The parasitic liver fluke Fasciola hepatica infests mainly ruminants, but it can also cause fasciolosis in people, who ingest the metacercariae encysted on plants. The drug of choice to treat fasciolosis is triclabendazole (TBZ), which has been on the market for several decades. This is also true for the other available drugs. Accordingly, drug-resistant flukes have been emerging at an increasing rate making it desirable to identify alternative drug targets. Here, we focused on the fact that adult F. hepatica persists in the hostile environment of the bile ducts of infected organisms. A common

Effect of diuretics on sodium and chloride permeability in the rat papillary collecting duct.

While in vivo data suggests that diuretics such as furosemide and hydrochlorothiazide alter inner medulla collecting duct (IMCD) cell electrolyte transport, this has not been confirmed by in vivo studies nor have the mechanisms been evaluated. This study evaluated the direct effect of these diuretics as well as amiloride on sodium and chloride unidirectional permeability in the isolated perfused rat IMCD. In the absence of diuretics, the permeability of sodium was lower than that of chloride (0.63 +/- 0.05 compared with 0.83 +/- 0.08 micrometer/s), although both were relatively impermeable whe

Use of ammonium chloride and sodium bicarbonate in acute heat exposure of broilers.

Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) were added separately to the drinking water of 42- to 52-day-old broilers. Birds were given access to the water ad libitum for a total of 42.5 hr consisting of 18.5 hr prior to an 8-hr interval of severe heat exposure and a further 16 hr-post exposure. Water and feed intake during the treatment period were unaffected by either NH4Cl at 6.25 g/liter (.63%) of distilled water (DW) or NaHCO3 at 3.15 g/liter (.32%) DW. Water intake was increased by approximately 20% in birds given water containing 6.25 g of NaHCO3/liter (.63%) DW, while bot
