Treatment of a synthetic solution of galvanization effluent via the conversion of sodium cyanide into an insoluble safe complex.

Wastewater discharged from metal-finishing processes usually contains cyanide, a hazardous substance that is used extensively in the surface finishing industry. In the present study, a synthetic solution resembling the contaminated wastewater was chemically treated using ferrous sulfate. This simple one-step process was applied successfully to remove cyanide from metal finishing wastewater. The experiments were carried out on a synthetic solution containing ions of cyanide and zinc. The effects of mixing velocity, ratio of ferrous ions to cyanide ions, ferrous ions concentration, initial cyani

Prevention of fetal and maternal cyanide toxicity from nitroprusside with coinfusion of sodium thiosulfate in gravid ewes.

Coadministration of sodium thiosulfate with sodium nitroprusside (SNP) to children and adults prevents increases in cyanide concentrations during anesthesia or long-term SNP infusions. We wondered whether maternally administered sodium thiosulfate would prevent increases in fetal red cell cyanide concentrations in gravid ewes receiving SNP infusions. Under anesthesia, the fetal head was delivered through a lateral hysterotomy for catheterization of the jugular vein; the fetus was left in utero. Six control ewes near term received SNP at 25 micrograms.kg-1.min-1 for 4 h. Norepinephrine was used

Effect of sub-acute oral cyanide administration in rats: protective efficacy of alpha-ketoglutarate and sodium thiosulfate.

Chronic toxicity of cyanide in humans and animals has been previously described. Alpha-ketoglutarate (alpha-KG) and sodium thiosulfate (STS) are known to confer remarkable protection against acute cyanide poisoning in rodents. Their efficacy against sub-acute or chronic cyanide exposure is not known. The objective of the present study was to assess the sub-acute toxicity of potassium cyanide (KCN) in female rats following oral administration of 7.0 mg/kg (0.5 LD50) for 14 d. The effect of alpha-KG (oral; 1.0 g/kg) and/or STS (intraperitoneal, 1.0 g/kg) on cyanide toxicity was also evaluated. V

Therapeutic efficacy of sodium nitrite and 4-dimethylaminophenol or hydroxylamine co-administration against cyanide poisoning in rats.

1. The therapeutic efficacy of combined treatment of sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and 4-dimethylaminophenol (DMAP) or hydroxylamine (H2NOH) was investigated in potassium cyanide (KCN) intoxication in male rats. 2. Therapy with NaNO2 (0.27 mmol kg-1) + DMAP (0.09 mmol kg-1) or NaNO2 + H2NOH (0.09 mmol kg-1, produced a protection index (ratio of LD50 of KCN in rats receiving therapy to an LD50 of KCN in rats given only 0.9% saline) of 2.5 and 2.0 respectively. 3. Both the regimens exhibited a beneficial effect in terms of improving the survival time and postural defects in rats exposed to 2 LD50 KCN.

Effects of sodium cyanide upon swimming performance in guinea-pigs and the conferment of protection by pretreatment with p-aminopropiophenone.

The swimming performance of guinea-pigs was degraded following administration of sodium cyanide (NaCN) at doses which were not lethal for individual animals. Decrements in performance were observed two minutes following subcutaneous administration of NaCN, were maximal at 8-16 minutes and, at the highest dose tested, did not return to control levels until 64-128 minutes. Pretreatment with p-aminopropiophenone (PAPP) at a dose inducing 7-15% methemoglobinemia (met.Hb), 15-90 minutes after administration, protected animals against the effects of NaCN upon swimming performance. However, the prote

Interactions between dietary selenium, copper and sodium nitroprusside, a source of cyanide in growing chicks and laying hens.

1. Diets containing supplements of selenium (10 mg/kg as sodium selenite), copper (500 mg/kg as copper (II) sulphate) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP 300 mg/kg) as a source of cyanide, were fed singly and in all possible combinations to chicks from 14 to 35 d of age. 2. Both copper and SNP individually alleviated the growth depression caused by excess selenium but interacted adversely with one another. The effect of SNP was to decrease liver selenium but copper increased it. Despite this contrast it is suggested that both achieve their beneficial effects through influences on the fraction of liv

Cardiovascular responses of embryonic alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) exposed to 10% O2 and sodium cyanide (NaCN), a chemoreflex-inducing compound.

The possibly interactive effects of changes in atmospheric respiratory gases (hypoxia or hypercapnia) and pharmacological chemoreceptor stimulation have not been assessed previously. We present a series of experimental protocols investigating embryonic alligators' capacity to modulate a cardiovascular neural chemoreflex response to a known chemoreceptor stimulant, sodium cyanide (NaCN). We incubated alligator embryos in 21 % (normoxia) and 10 % O2 (hypoxia) beginning at 20 % of embryonic incubation, and at 70 % and 90 % of incubation we measured heart rate and blood pressure responses to NaCN.

Deciphering the nitric oxide, cyanide and iron-mediated actions of sodium nitroprusside in cotyledons of salt stressed sunflower seedlings.

Nitric oxide (NO) is an endogenous signaling molecule in plants. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP), an established NO donor used in plant science research, simultaneously releases NO, cyanide (CN-) and iron (Fe) in solution. Since cyanide and iron mask NO effect of SNP, its use in NO research is debatable. Deciphering the action of SNP through NO, CN- or Fe has been undertaken in the present work. Cotyledons from salt stressed sunflower seedlings grown in the presence of NO donors were subjected to spectrofluorometric analysis of NO, CN- and Fe contents, and proteome and biochemical analyses. Diethyl

Cyanide Antidote inspired Ecofriendly Preparation of Sodium-rich, High-crystallinity Prussian Blue Cathode Materials from a Single-iron Source Method.

Sodium-rich Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) are promising cathode candidates for sodium-ion batteries, offering high crystallinity, excellent electrochemical performance, and low cost. However, traditional hydrothermal synthesis often necessitates acid treatment, which presents a safety risk due to the potential release of toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN). Inspired by sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) as a known cyanide antidote, we developed a novel synthesis method that mitigates the risks of HCN leakage, yields high-crystallinity products with minimal defects while promoting the formation of sodium-ric
