The value of combined soft-tissue and vessel visualisation before transarterial chemoembolisation of the liver using C-arm computed tomography.

The purpose of the study was to prospectively evaluate intrahepatic vessel depiction on C-arm CT (CACT) and the influence of the additional combined tissue and three-dimensional vessel visualisation on the positioning of the TACE catheter in comparison to DSA alone. Thirty consecutive patients scheduled for their first transarterial chemoembolisation underwent biphasic CACT and DSA of the liver. After assessing the DSA images for procedure planning, the CACT images were reviewed. The number and origin of the tumour-feeding arteries and the ideal position of the catheter for TACE on both DSA an

Mechanobiology of soft skeletal tissue differentiation--a computational approach of a fiber-reinforced poroelastic model based on homogeneous and isotropic simplifications.

The material properties of multipotent mesenchymal tissue change dramatically during the differentiation process associated with skeletal regeneration. Using a mechanobiological tissue differentiation concept, and homogeneous and isotropic simplifications of a fiber-reinforced poroelastic model of soft skeletal tissues, we have developed a mathematical approach for describing time-dependent material property changes during the formation of cartilage, fibrocartilage, and fibrous tissue under various loading histories. In this approach, intermittently imposed fluid pressure and tensile strain re

The validity of the prediction of Soft Tissue profile changes after LeFort I osteotomy using the dentofacial planner (computer software).

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the prediction of soft tissue changes after LeFort I osteotomy with the DentoFacial Planner (DFP) (computer software). The preoperative and postoperative lateral cephalograms of 21 white adult orthodontic patients (10 males and 11 females) who underwent only LeFort I osteotomy as part of their overall treatment were digitized. A coordinate system of X and Y axes were used to assess the amount and direction of movement of the maxilla. The SN + 7 degrees was the X axis, and a perpendicular to this plane from nasion was the Y axis. The samp

Association Between Soft Tissue Measures From Computed Tomography and Upper Airway Collapsibility on Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy.

OBJECTIVE: Positive airway pressure (PAP) titration during drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) provides objective measures of upper airway collapsibility. While skeletal measurements relate to collapsibility measures on DISE, the influence of soft tissue dimensions on upper airway collapsibility is not known. We analyzed the relationship of measures of upper airway soft tissue volumes, specifically soft palate, pharyngeal lateral walls, and tongue, with metrics of collapsibility. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis from a prospective cohort. SETTING: Academic medical center. METHODS: Pat

Cadaveric Study and Micro-Computed Tomography of the Anatomy of Palatine Aponeurosis and its Link to the Soft Palate Muscles and Pharyngeal Muscles.

OBJECTIVE: There have been few studies on the anatomy of palatine aponeurosis (PA). Herein, we elucidated the relationship between the PA and soft palate muscles and pharyngeal muscles. DESIGN: Two cadaveric specimens were dissected to observe the gross anatomy of the PA. Six cadaveric specimens were processed and scanned by micro-computed tomography to determine the elaborate anatomy. Images were exported to Mimics software to reconstruct a three-dimensional model. RESULTS: The PA covered the anterior (32.1%-38.8%) of the soft palate, extending from the tensor veli palatini (TVP) and connec

Three-dimensional analysis of craniofacial bones and soft tissues in obstructive sleep apnea using cone beam computed tomography.

A total of 154 adult patients with sleep complaints underwent a polysomnography and a craniofacial cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). OSA was defined as an apnea and hypopnea index (AHI) or an oxygen desaturation index (ODI) ≥ 10. Soft tissues and craniofacial bones volumes were prospectively measured by CBCT and collected blindly from sleep polysomnography. Among the study patients, 127 (83%) suffered from OSA and 27 (17%) did not. OSA patients demonstrated a narrower maxillo-palatine core volume (11.7±3.2 vs 14.6±4.9cm3) even when adjusting for age, gender, height, neck circumference and

Influence of maxillary advancement surgery on skeletal and soft-tissue changes in the nose - a retrospective cone-beam computed tomography study.

OBJECTIVES: Surgical correction of skeletal maxillary retroposition is often associated with changes in the morphology of the nose. Unwanted alar flaring of the nose is observed in many cases. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate the influence of surgical advancement of the maxilla on changes in the soft-tissue morphology of the nose. Having a coefficient that allows prediction of change in the nasal width in Caucasian patients after surgery would be helpful for treatment planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All 33 patients included in this retrospective study were of Caucasi

A Computational Model Reveals How Varying Muscle Activation in the Lateral Pharyngeal Wall and Soft Palate Differentiates Velopharyngeal Closure Patterns.

PURPOSE: Finite element (FE) models have emerged as a powerful method to study biomechanical complexities of velopharyngeal (VP) function. However, existing models have overlooked the active contributions of the lateral pharyngeal wall (LPW) in VP closure. This study aimed to develop and validate a more comprehensive FE model of VP closure to include the superior pharyngeal constrictor (SPC) muscle within the LPW as an active component of VP closure. METHOD: The geometry of the velum and the lateral and posterior pharyngeal walls with biomechanical activation governed by the levator veli pala

Facial soft-tissue asymmetry in three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography images of children with surgically corrected unilateral clefts.

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) is a relatively common craniofacial malformation involving bony and soft-tissue disruptions of the nasolabial and dentoalveolar regions. The combination of CL/P and subsequent craniofacial surgeries to close the cleft and improve appearance of the cutaneous upper lip and nose can cause scarring and muscle pull, possibly resulting in soft-tissue depth asymmetries across the face. We tested the hypothesis that tissue depths in children with unilateral CL/P exhibit differences in symmetry across the sides of the face. Twenty-eight tissue depths were m

Volumetric comparison of maxillofacial soft tissue morphology: computed tomography in the supine position versus three-dimensional optical scanning in the sitting position.

OBJECTIVE: Three-dimensional (3-D) surgical simulation has become popular, but the accuracy of such simulation is difficult to assess. Because maxillofacial soft tissue profiles vary with posture, we compared such profiles obtained in the supine and sitting positions. STUDY DESIGN: In total, 28 patients with skeletal Class III jaw deformities underwent computed tomography in the supine position and 3-D optical scanning in the sitting position. The 2 sets of 3-D data were superimposed, and linear and volumetric differences were calculated. We evaluated the cheeks, the subauricular and infraorb
