Iron (Fe) oxyhydroxides can be reductively dissolved or transformed under Fe reducing conditions, affecting mineral crystallinity and the sorption capacity for other elements. However, the pathways and rates at which these processes occur under natural soil conditions are still poorly understood. Here, we studied Fe oxyhydroxide transformations during reduction-oxidation cycles by incubating mesh bags containing ferrihydrite or lepidocrocite in paddy soil mesocosms for up to 12 weeks. To investigate the influence of close contact with the soil matrix, mesh bags were either filled with pure Fe

Reduction in soil fertility and depletion of natural resources due to current intensive agricultural practices along with climate changes are the major constraints for crop productivity and global food security. Diverse microbial populations' inhabiting the soil and rhizosphere participate in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and thereby, improve soil fertility and plant health, and reduce the adverse impact of synthetic fertilizers on the environment. Sulphur is 4th most common crucial macronutrient required by all organisms including plants, animals, humans and microorganisms. Effective st

Coccidioidomycosis, also known as Valley fever, is a disease that can result in substantial illness and death. It is most common in the southwestern United States and areas of Latin America with arid climates, though reports increasingly suggest its range is wider than previously recognized. The natural habitat of the causative organisms, Coccidioides spp., have been associated with certain soil properties and climatic conditions. Current understanding of its geographic range is primarily defined by skin test studies and outbreak locations. We developed a fuzzy system model to predict suitable

A large proportion (60-90%) of ingested tetracyclines are released to slurry, soils, surface waters and ground water, which has raised extensive concerns and may pose a risk to the soil ecosystem. A 56-day experiment was conducted to study the bioremediation by earthworms on soil microbial diversity and partial nitrification processes in oxytetracycline (OTC)-contaminated soil. The results showed that high OTC concentration significantly decreased the activity of soil bacteria, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA). Earthworms were found to accelerate the degradation efficiency an

In this work, it is studied a wind-powered electrokinetic soil flushing process for the removal of pesticides from soil. This approach aims to develop an eco-friendly electrochemical soil treatment technique and to face the in-situ treatment of polluted soils at remote locations. Herbicide 2,4 dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is selected as a model pollutant for the soil treatment tests. The performance of the wind-powered process throughout a 15 days experiment is compared to the same remediation process powered by a conventional DC power supply. The wind-powered test covered many different

Methyl bromide (MB) and other alternatives were evaluated for suppression of Fusarium spp., Phytophthora spp., and Meloidogyne spp. and their influence on soil microbial communities. Both Fusarium spp. and Phytophthora spp. were significantly reduced by the MB (30.74 mg kg-1), methyl iodide (MI: 45.58 mg kg-1), metham sodium (MS: 53.92 mg kg-1) treatments. MS exhibited comparable effectiveness to MB in controlling Meloidogyne spp. and total nematodes, followed by MI at the tested rate. By contrast, sulfuryl fluoride (SF: 33.04 mg kg-1) and chloroform (CF: 23.68 mg kg-1) showed low efficacy in

Interest in identifying pools of antibacterial-resistance genes has grown over the last decade, with veterinary antibiotics (VAs) receiving particular attention. In this paper, a mesoscale study aimed at evaluating the vertical transport of common VAs-namely, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and lincosamides in agricultural soil subjected to drip irrigation-was performed under greenhouse conditions. Accordingly, leachates of cropped and uncropped soil, amended with swine-slurry leading to 19-38 μg kg(-1) (dry mass) antibiotics in the soil, were analyzed over the course of the pro

The biochar amendment to soil proved to be beneficial to improve soil quality and provide nutrients. However, the effect of biochar on the availability of P is still controversial. We aim to study the effect of adding phosphate fertiliser and biochar on the P bioavailability in soils of different mineralogies. Eight biochars derived from biomass (rice husk and coffee husk), soil (sandy and clayey), and phosphate fertiliser (triple superphosphate) were produced. The biochar enrichment process with superphosphate was carried out before and after pyrolysis. Thus, we tested two biochar groups: (1)

The fate and transport of microplastics (MPs) in heterogeneous soil systems remain poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the transport behaviors of three distinct MP polymers, polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), with twelve representative Chinese soil colloids using saturated column experiments packed with quartz sand. Without soil colloids, PS and PP exhibited high transport with breakthrough mass recoveries ranging from ∼70 to 90%. Notably, the introduction of various soil colloids exerted a negligible impact on the transport of PS

Soil degradation caused by intensive agricultural management has become a major constraint on sustainable crop production, highlighting the need for multifunctional soil amendments capable of simultaneously improving soil structural quality and crop performance. In this greenhouse pot experiment, the effects of Trichoderma viride-fermented xylose residue on soil physical and chemical properties, aggregate stability, soil nutrient status, root development, photosynthetic characteristics, and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) growth were evaluated. The fermented amendment was incorporated into soil

BACKGROUND: Soil moisture availability strongly constrains the establishment of cyanobacteria-based biological soil crusts (BSCs). This study investigated whether fungal co-inoculation could improve drought tolerance during biocrust development.
METHODS: Cyanobacterial crusts (C) and cyanobacterial-fungal composite crusts (CF) were cultivated for 60 days under five soil-moisture levels (0-20%) using sand from the Hobq Desert, China. Chlorophyll a, chlorophyll fluorescence, soil nutrients, enzyme activities, EPS fractions, and GC-MS-based exometabolomics were measured.
RESULTS: CF crusts main

Plant-soil feedbacks (PSFs) may determine plant-species coexistence. They may stabilize coexistence, but frequently destabilize it by increasing fitness differences between species. Most studies focus on pairwise models in greenhouses. Thus, whether PSFs favor or deter coexistence is still unclear, especially in multispecies field contexts. We analyzed pairwise and multispecies coexistence over a hydric gradient in a semiarid grassland. Using PSF strength estimates between 17 species, we measured stability and fitness differences between all species pairs, and built all possible multispecies c

Insect farming is expected to increase in coming years, thus generating high quantities of frass (insect excreta). Frass valorization hinges on basic agronomic research prior to industry upscaling. Here, we investigated soil physiochemical properties, SMAF (Soil Management Assessment Framework) soil health, CO2 efflux, and bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] yield and quality as affected by yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.) frass [3400 and 6800 kg ha-1, low (LF) and high (HF) rates], poultry litter (PL; 3400 kg ha-1), and ammonium nitrate (AN; 67 kg N ha-1). Polyacrylic acid (PAA), a synthetic superabsorbent polymer (SAP), enhances the maximum water holding capacity (WHCmax), soil structural stability, and aeration of soil but may simultaneously affect soil microbiome by altering soil properties. However, its effects on microbial activity under different moisture regimes remain insufficiently understood. We examined the impact of PAA on soil microbial activity in a sand and loam treated with PAA at three concentrations (25, 250, 2500 mg kg- 1 dry soil) either incubated under constant moisture or subjected to ten drying-rewetting cycles. During inc

Soil salinity is a significant abiotic stress that restricts plant growth and agricultural productivity. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) offer an eco-friendly and sustainable strategy to mitigate the detrimental effects of salinity by enhancing nutrient availability and promoting plant development. In this study, twelve halophilic bacterial isolates were obtained from saline soils of coastal regions in India and screened for PGPR traits, including siderophore production, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), ammonia production, exopolysaccharide (EPS), cellulase activ

Flooding and salinization triggered by storm surges threaten the survival of coastal forests. The forest root zone (top 40 cm of soil) is the most affected by surge flooding. Determining the effect of a storm surge on edaphic conditions is essential to estimate vegetation response. Pre-storm soil hydrology could mitigate or enhance the salinization effect, ultimately determining the resilience of the forest. Here we assess the influence of pre-storm soil water content and salinity on storm surge effects in coastal vegetated areas. A 1D model (HYDRUS-1D) is used to simulate saltwater infiltrati

Microbial fertilizers have the characteristics of high efficiency and environmental protection in improving saline soils, and the application of functional microbial fertilizers is of great significance for the green abatement of saline barriers and the improvement of soil quality in coastal areas. The experiment was based on moderately saline soil in the coastal area of Hebei Province, with corn as the indicator crop, on the basis of conventional chemical fertilizer application. Different microbial fertilizer treatments, namely, T1 (conventional chemical fertilizer 750 kg·hm-2 + compound micr

BACKGROUND: One-fifth of the global population is infected with soil-transmitted helminths (STH). Mass drug administration (MDA) with deworming medication is widely implemented to control morbidity associated with STH infections. However, surveillance of human infection prevalence by collecting individual stool samples is time-consuming, costly, often stigmatized, and logistically challenging. Current methods of STH detection are poorly sensitive, particularly in low-intensity and low-prevalence populations.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We aimed to develop a sensitive and specific molecula

The effects of different fertilization on microbial communities and resistome in agricultural soils with a history of fresh manure application remains largely unclear. Here, soil antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and microbial communities were deciphered using metagenomics approach from a long-term field experiment with different fertilizer inputs. A total of 541 ARG subtypes were identified, with Multidrug, Macrolides-Lincosamides-Streptogramins (MLS), and Bacitracin resistance genes as the most universal ARG types. The abundance of ARGs detected in manure (2.

Massive use of pesticides in conventional agriculture leads to accumulation in soil of complex mixtures, triggering questions about their potential ecotoxicological risk. This study assessed cropland soils containing pesticide mixtures sampled from conventional and organic farming systems at La Cage and Mons, France. The conventional agricultural field soils contained more pesticide residues (11 and 17 versus 3 and 11, respectively) and at higher concentrations than soils from organic fields (mean 6.6 and 10.5 versus 0.2 and 0.6 μg kg-1, respectively), including systemic insecticides belonging
