Human health risk assessment of occupational exposure to NORMs using deterministic and Monte Carlo-based methods: a case study of artisanal gold mining areas.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining is a critical livelihood for many in developing regions, yet it poses momentous environmental and health risks, principally through the release of naturally occurring radioactive materials. The study evaluates the annual effective dose received by artisans engaged in several mining activities at Itagunmodi and Iperindo in Osun State, Nigeria. The soil and rock samples were analysed for the activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides (40K, 226Ra, and 232Th) using gamma spectrometry. These concentrations were then used to determine the annua

Soil radioactivity and radiation absorbed dose rates at roadsides in high-traffic density areas in Ibadan metropolis, southwestern Nigeria.

The effect of ionising radiation on biological systems depends among other factors on time and place of exposure and population involved. Socio-economic factors in human daily activities have subjected humans to certain environmental health risks. In most cases the risk appears to be higher outdoors than indoors. In order to quantify the radiation exposure levels to individuals in the outdoors in areas with high human and vehicular densities, roadside soil samples were collected from major bus stops and round-about in the metropolis of Ibadan and were analysed for their activity concentration

Plants experiencing chronic internal exposure to ionizing radiation exhibit higher frequency of homologous recombination than acutely irradiated plants.

Ionizing radiation (IR) is a known mutagen responsible for causing DNA strand breaks in all living organisms. Strand breaks thus created can be repaired by different mechanisms, including homologous recombination (HR), one of the key mechanisms maintaining genome stability [A. Britt, DNA damage and repair in plants, Annu. Rev. Plant. Phys. Plant Mol. Biol., 45 (1996) 75-100; H. Puchta, B. Hohn, From centiMorgans to basepairs: homologous recombination in plants, Trends Plant Sci., 1 (1996) 340-348.]. Acute or chronic exposure to IR may have different influences on the genome integrity. Effects of coal ash containing elevated uranium decay chain radionuclides on native Octodrilus lissaensis in landfills, focusing on element transfer, radiation dosage, and toxicity assessment.

In this study, the effects of long-term exposure of native earthworms (Octodrilus lissaensis Michaelsen, 1891) that inhabit the disposal site of coal ash with enhanced content of uranium decay chain radionuclides were investigated. The concentrations of V, Fe, Ni, As, Se, Rb, Mo, Sn, Sb, Th and Hg were significantly higher in earthworms from the disposal site, while those of Na, K, Ca, Mn and Co were lower compared to the control. The activity concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, 210Pb and 210Po were six to nine times higher than those in the control group. The mean dose rate of ionizing radiation t

Evaluation of DNA damage in the root cells of Allium cepa seeds growing in soil of high background radiation areas of Ramsar-Iran.

Plants are unique in their ability to serve as in situ monitors for environmental genotoxins. We have used the alkaline comet assay for detecting induced DNA damage in Allium cepa to estimate the impact of high levels of natural radiation in the soils of inhabited zones of Ramsar. The average specific activity of natural radionuclides measured in the soil samples for 226Ra was 12,766 Bq kg(-1) whereas in the control soils was in the range of 34-60 Bq kg(-1). A positive strong significant correlation of the DNA damage in nuclei of the root cells of A. cepa seeds germinated in the soil of high b

Chlorine cycling and the fate of Cl in terrestrial environments.

Chlorine (Cl) in the terrestrial environment is of interest from multiple perspectives, including the use of chloride as a tracer for water flow and contaminant transport, organochlorine pollutants, Cl cycling, radioactive waste (radioecology; 36Cl is of large concern) and plant science (Cl as essential element for living plants). During the past decades, there has been a rapid development towards improved understanding of the terrestrial Cl cycle. There is a ubiquitous and extensive natural chlorination of organic matter in terrestrial ecosystems where naturally formed chlorinated organic com

[Effect of ionizing radiation on the living body].

Since the Fukushima nuclear plant accident following the great East Japan earthquake on March 11, 2011, we have been warned to be careful about possible radiation exposure almost every day in newspapers and on TV. Radioactive iodine ((131)I) and cesium ((134)Cs, (137)Cs) produced by nuclear reactions were released into the air during and after the accident, and have been scattered by the winds in Tohoku and in the Kanto district. Even today, 2 years after the accident, there is great public concern about possible pollution of foodstuffs and fishery products with radioactive cesium, not only in

Sensitivity of Ostracods to U, Cd and Cu: The Case of Cypridopsis vidua.

The development of uranium mines has been necessary to obtain abundant and scarce uranium resources, but they also bring inevitable radioactive contamination to the surrounding soil, rivers and lakes. This paper explores the sensitivity of Cypridopsis vidua to the radioactive element uranium and the heavy elements cadmium and copper with single and combined acute toxicity experiments and combined toxicity model predictions. The results from the single toxicity experiments showed that the degree of toxic effects was cadmium > copper > uranium. The combined toxicity experiments showed that the c

Radiogeochemistry, mineralogy, lithology, radiogenic heat production, and health implication using airborne radiometric data of Ilesha and its surroundings.

The current study analyzed and interpreted airborne radiometric data from Ilesha's basement complex rock and its surroundings. At the surface, the concentrations of the most frequent primordial radionuclides notably K, elemental concentration of uranium eU, and elemental concentration of thorium eTh were measured. The weighted mean elemental and activity concentrations were 0.85%, 2.75 ppm, 10.22 ppm, and 267.54 Bq kg-1, 34.41 Bq kg-1, 41.51 Bq kg-1 for 40 K, 238U, and 232Th, respectively. The low concentration of 40 K was certainly due to the effects of weathering, kaolinization of granites,

Environmental implications of phosphate-based fertilizer industrial waste and its management practices.

During the green revolution in the mid-twentieth century, the consumption of inorganic phosphorous and phosphate-based fertilizers (P-fertilizers) in the developing world skyrocketed, resulting in a proliferation of P-fertilizer industries. Phosphate-based fertilizer industries are ranked among the most environment-polluting industries. The worldwide phosphorus market, which was 68.5 million metric tons in 2020, is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.5% to 81 million metric tons by 2027. The release of untreated hazardous pollutants from these fertilizer industrie

[Lichens as rapid bioindicators of pollution and habitat disturbances in the tropics].

Lichens have value as bioindicators of environmental pollution, climate change, and ecological continuity. Extensive work has been undertaken in temperate areas, but in only few cases have the techniques been applied in the tropics. Most tropical studies to date are in relation to air pollution and forest disturbance, but these are scattered geographically and remain to be undertaken in most tropical regions. The potential of lichens as rapid bioindicators in the tropics can start to be realized even where the species described are not fully identified as they are perennial and separable by ey

Interaction of hydration, aging, and carbon content of soil on the evaporation and skin bioavailability of munition contaminants.

Water plays a key role in enhancing the permeability of human skin to many substances. To further understand its ability to potentially increase the bioavailability of soil contaminants, artificial sweat was applied to excised pig skin prior to dosing with munition-contaminated soils. Skin was mounted in chambers to allow simultaneous measurement of evaporation and penetration and to control air flow, which changed the dwell time of skin surface water within a l-h period post application of test materials. Additional variables included type of compound, aging of spiked soil samples, and carbon

CONTRIBUTION OF THE G1691A ALLELE CARRYING OF THE COAGULATION FACTOR V GENE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THROMBOSES IN RADIATION-EXPOSED PATIENTS WITH REACTIVE CHANGES IN PERIPHERAL BLOOD.

UNLABELLED: Thrombosis triggers, in addition to «classic» risk factors (RFs) of cardiovascular events, includes the reactive changesof peripheral blood (RCPB), markers of the hereditary thrombophilia and radiation anamnesis. However, results ofmost studies suggest the «classic» RFs are able to neutralize the prothrombogenic potential of the hereditary thrombophilia and other, less powerful predictors of thrombosis. OBJECTIVE: to determine the influence of the G1691A allele of the proaccelerin gene carrying to the thrombosis development, taking into account the vascular type of their occurrenc

Elevated radiological hazards in a legacy coal mining area: unveiling hidden cancer risks from natural radionuclides in Enugu Iva Valley, Southeast Nigeria.

The Okpara (Iva Valley) coal mine in Enugu State, Nigeria, represents an unmanaged legacy site where uranium- and thorium-enriched Enugu Shale waste releases radionuclides into a densely populated agricultural community through acid mine drainage (AMD) and aeolian dispersal. Certified gamma spectrometric analysis of 40K, 226Ra, and 232Th was conducted on 24 environmental samples (Activation Analysis Lab (Actlabs), Ancaster, Canada and Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) , Ahmadu Bello University). Eight hazard indices, compliant with UNSCEAR and ICRP frameworks, were derived alongsi

Reducing radiation exposure using commonly available objects.

OBJECTIVES: One and a half years have passed since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. The environmental radiation dose rate was not critical, but an existing exposure situation has been identified in a large part of Fukushima Prefecture. Although people continue to live and work in the contaminated area, they are not provided with sufficient information to reduce their exposure to radiation by themselves. In this study, we attempt to evaluate the efficiency of radiation shielding by using everyday items widely available to people. METHODS: NaI scintillation and Geiger-Müller
