The inability of cochlear implant (CI) users to accurately localize sound sources poses daily safety risks and impedes social communication. While future augmented reality (AR) glasses are an ideal platform for delivering real-time visual and tactile assistive cues, their potential is hampered by a critical knowledge gap: how to design effective, non-distracting interfaces for this specific user group. To address this, we introduce a novel methodological approach using a virtual reality (VR) platform with high-fidelity color passthrough. This platform functions as an ecologically valid yet ful

Sound localization involves information analysis in the lateral superior olive (LSO), a conspicuous nucleus in the mammalian auditory brainstem. LSO neurons weigh interaural level differences (ILDs) through precise integration of glutamatergic excitation from the cochlear nucleus (CN) and glycinergic inhibition from the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB). Sound sources can be localized even during sustained perception, an accomplishment that requires robust neurotransmission. Virtually nothing is known about the sustained performance and the temporal precision of MNTB-LSO inputs after

Congenital unilateral conductive hearing loss (UCHL) jeopardizes directional hearing and speech perception in noisy conditions. Potentially, children with congenital UCHL can benefit from fitting a hearing device, such as a bone-conduction device (BCD). However, the literature reports limited benefit from fitting a BCD, and often, surprisingly, relatively good sound localization in the unaided condition is reported. In this study, we hypothesized that the limited benefit with a BCD is related to (i) insufficient access to binaural cues and (ii) relying on monaural spectral pinna cues for sound

The human external ears, or pinnae, have an intriguing shape and, like most parts of the human external body, bilateral symmetry is observed between left and right. It is a well-known part of our auditory sensory system and mediates the spatial localization of incoming sounds in 3D from monaural cues due to its shape-specific filtering as well as binaural cues due to the paired bilateral locations of the left and right ears. Another less broadly appreciated aspect of the human pinna shape is its uniqueness from one individual to another, which is on the level of what is seen in fingerprints an

Neuroimaging studies show that permanent peripheral lesions such as unilateral deafness cause functional reorganization in the auditory pathways. However, functional reorganization of the auditory pathways as a result of higher-level damage or abnormalities remains poorly investigated. A relatively recent behavioural study points to functional changes in the auditory pathways in some, but interestingly not in all, of the acallosal individuals that were tested. The present study uses fMRI to investigate auditory activities in both cerebral hemispheres in those same acallosal subjects in order t

Although the contributions of primary auditory cortex (AI) to sound localization have been extensively studied in a large number of mammals, little is known of the contributions of nonprimary auditory cortex to sound localization. Therefore the purpose of this study was to examine the contributions of both primary and all the recognized regions of acoustically responsive nonprimary auditory cortex to sound localization during both bilateral and unilateral reversible deactivation. The cats learned to make an orienting response (head movement and approach) to a 100-ms broad-band noise stimulus e

Stark declines in the abundance and distribution of bull kelp and reduced genetic diversity have been observed in Puget Sound, Washington, especially in southernmost areas. Introducing new variation through genetic rescue has emerged as a promising restoration strategy. However, its success hinges on preserving local adaptation, which has not been studied in the region. To that end, we performed whole-genome sequencing using Illumina next-generation sequencing on 65 gametophyte individuals from our biobank, sourced from 19 sites across Puget Sound. We identified three genetic clusters, corresp

Cardiac auscultation is an essential part of physical examination and plays a key role in the early diagnosis of many cardiovascular diseases. The analysis of phonocardiography (PCG) recordings is generally based on the recognition of the main heart sounds, i.e., S1 and S2, which is not a trivial task. This study proposes a method for an accurate recognition and localization of heart sounds in Forcecardiography (FCG) recordings. FCG is a novel technique able to measure subsonic vibrations and sounds via small force sensors placed onto a subject's thorax, allowing continuous cardio-respiratory

BACKGROUND: Individuals with unilateral hearing loss show poor spatial hearing, but individual variability is high.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To investigate if the degree of hearing loss in unilateral ear canal atresia affects horizontal sound localization and speech recognition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve subjects with unilateral ear canal atresia without childhood hearing intervention. Previously published data from eight normal-hearing subjects in normal binaural as well as experimentally induced unilateral hearing loss served as a reference. Horizontal sound localization and recognition of spe

An unexpected loud sound can elicit an acoustic startle reflex and potentially cause a temporary threshold shift (TTS) for hearing and noise-induced tinnitus for a short period of time. This occurs, for example, with the high-amplitude noise burst that accompanies a bright light and impulsive force when police or military use a "flashbang" grenade to temporarily disable or confuse an adversary. This pilot study evaluated the effects of an unexpected loud acoustic impulse sound on human subject performance in terms of (1) word recognition in noise, and (2) sound localization, both examined in a

Spatial hearing, which largely relies on binaural time/level cues, is a challenge for patients with asymmetric hearing. The degree of the deficit is largely variable, and better sound localization performance is frequently reported. Studies on the compensatory mechanism revealed that monaural level cues and monoaural spectral cues contribute to variable behavior in those patients who lack binaural spatial cues. However, changes in the monaural level cues have not yet been separately investigated. In this study, the use of the level cue in sound localization was measured using stimuli of 1 kHz

Patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) often experience poor sound localization, reduced speech understanding in noise, reduced quality of life, and tinnitus. The present study aims to evaluate effects of tinnitus and duration of deafness on sound localization and speech recognition in noise by SSD subjects. Sound localization and speech recognition in noise were measured in 26 SSD and 10 normal-hearing (NH) subjects. Speech was always presented directly in front of the listener. Noise was presented to the deaf ear, in front of the listener, or to the better hearing ear. Tinnitus severity w

BACKGROUND: Single-sided deafness (SSD) impairs spatial hearing because of the loss of binaural cues. However, some individuals with SSD show unexpectedly accurate localization, suggesting compensatory mechanisms. This study investigated whether residual hearing in the poorer-hearing ear is related to localization ability and whether this relationship varies across frequency bands.
METHODS: Fourteen SSD patients participated in a sound localization task using broadband (BB), low-pass (LP), and high-pass (HP) filtered noise stimuli. Residual hearing thresholds (125-20 000 Hz) were measured acr

Objectives: It has been proven that patients with unilateral conductive hearing loss (UCHL) may encounter typical problems associated with asymmetric hearing, especially in challenging listening environments. In this study, we aimed to determine how UCHL affects speech recognition under multisource competing environments and the ability of sound source localization, as well as whether assistance with a bone conduction device (BCD) can confer hearing benefits in such listening tasks. Design: Acquired UCHL was simulated using an earplug combined with an earmuff in 10 listeners (mean age: 29.9 ±

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implantation (CI) for the treatment of single-sided deafness (SSD) is a relatively new treatment modality. Although comparing the effectiveness of CI and contralateral routing of signal (CROS) hearing aids (HAs) is important, very few reports on this topic exist. In this study, objective assessments and subjective assessments were conducted to determine which SSD individuals would prefer CI or CROS HAs.

Background: Proximal gastrectomy (PG) with double tract reconstruction (DTR) offers organ preservation for early gastric cancers, leading to reduced vitamin B12 deficiency, less weight loss, and improved quality of life. The JCOG1401 study confirmed excellent long-term outcomes for PG in stage I gastric cancer. However, in locally advanced proximal gastric cancer (LAPGC), preserving the gastric body and lymph node station 4d may compromise margin clearance and adequate lymphadenectomy. Methods: We propose a modified PG that removes the distal esophagus, gastroesophageal junction (GEJ), cardia,

Spatial cell organization and biofabrication of microcapillary networks in vitro has a great potential in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. This study explores the impact of local cell density enhancement achieved through an innovative sound-based patterning on microcapillary networks formation and their proteomic profile. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and human pericytes from placenta (hPC-PL) were mixed in a fibrin suspension. The mild effect of sound-induced hydrodynamic forces condensed cells into architected geometries showing good fidelity to the numerical si
