Acoustic study of pharyngeal swallowing as a function of the volume and consistency of the bolus.

Cervical auscultation is a noninvasive technique for the exploration of swallowing and has been used since the 1960s. The aim of our study was to describe how the volume and consistency of the bolus affect swallowing acoustic sound characteristics in healthy subjects. Twenty-three subjects aged from 20 to 59 years were included (13 women and 10 men). A microphone mounted on a stethoscope chest piece, positioned on the skin on the right side in front of the posteroinferior border of the cricoid cartilage, was used; it was connected to a computer for acoustic recordings. Each subject swallowed 2

Fusion of Low-Level Descriptors of Digital Voice Recordings for Dementia Assessment.

Digital voice recordings can offer affordable, accessible ways to evaluate behavior and function. We assessed how combining different low-level voice descriptors can evaluate cognitive status. Using voice recordings from neuropsychological exams at the Framingham Heart Study, we developed a machine learning framework fusing spectral, prosodic, and sound quality measures early in the training cycle. The model's area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.832 (±0.034) in differentiating persons with dementia from those who had normal cognition. This offers a data-driven framewor

Acoustic imaging of the human chest.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: A novel method for acoustic imaging of the human respiratory system is proposed and evaluated. DESIGN: The proposed imaging system uses simultaneous multisensor recordings of thoracic sounds from the chest wall, and digital, computer-based postprocessing. Computer simulations and recordings from a life-size gelatin model of the human thorax are used to evaluate the system in vitro. Spatial representations of thoracic sounds from 8-microphone and 16-microphone recordings from five subjects (four healthy male adults and one child with lung consolidation) are used to evaluate t

Intense low-frequency sound transiently biases human sound lateralisation.

Intense low-frequency (LF) sound exposure transiently alters hearing thresholds and other markers of cochlear sensitivity, and for these changes the term 'Bounce phenomenon' (BP) has been coined. Under the BP, hearing thresholds slowly oscillate for several minutes involving both stages of hyper- and hyposensitivity and it is reasonable to assume that the perception of sounds at levels well above threshold will also be affected. Here, we evaluated the effect of the BP on auditory lateralisation in healthy human subjects. Sound lateralisation crucially depends on the processing of either intera

High-speed video analysis of the phonation onset, with an application to the diagnosis of functional dysphonias.

An objective method for the diagnosis of functional dysphonias is presented. The mathematically motivated approach was evaluated on 71 female subjects with normal voice or functional dysphonia. Using digital high-speed recordings, the phonation onset process was recorded in real-time for 8-10 different sound pressure levels for each subject. From these recordings two parameters were mathematically estimated, reflecting the phonation onset dynamics. The growth of the vocal fold amplitudes during the phonation onset process was described by a parameter a for which its lower threshold value a(th)

Separation of heart sound signal from noise in joint cycle frequency-time-frequency domains based on fuzzy detection.

Noise is generally unavoidable during recordings of heart sound signal. Therefore, noise reduction is one of the important preprocesses in the analysis of heart sound signal. This was achieved in joint cycle frequency-time-frequency domains in this study. Heart sound signal was decomposed into components (called atoms) characterized by time delay, frequency, amplitude, time width, and phase. It was discovered that atoms of heart sound signal congregate in the joint domains. On the other hand, atoms of noise were dispersed. The atoms of heart sound signal could, therefore, be separated from the

Removing of Snoring Segments from Tracheal Breathing Sounds using a Wavelet-based Algorithm.

Tracheal sounds represent information about the upper airway and respiratory airflow, however, they can be contaminated by the snoring sounds. The sound of snoring has spectral content in a wide range that overlaps with that of breathing sounds during sleep. For assessing respiratory airflow using tracheal breathing sound, it is essential to remove the effect of snoring. In this paper, an automatic and unsupervised wavelet-based snoring removal algorithm is presented. Simultaneously with full-night polysomnography, the tracheal sound signals of 9 subjects with different levels of airway obstru

AI-Based Detection of Coronary Artery Occlusion Using Acoustic Biomarkers Before and After Stent Placement.

Goal: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the USA. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) in particular is responsible for over 40% of cardiovascular disease deaths. Early detection and treatment are critical in the reduction of deaths associated with CAD. Methods: Sound signatures of CAD vary for individual patients depending on where and how severe the blockage is. We propose the use of the artificial intelligence (AI, specifically the DeepSets architecture) to learn patient-specific acoustic biomarkers which distinguish heart sounds before and after percutaneous coronary interven

Origin of the sound components during pharyngeal swallowing in normal subjects.

The aim of this study was to identify the origin of swallowing sound components by using modern techniques that can provide numeric, synchronized acoustic-radiologic data. We enrolled 15 volunteer subjects (10 men and 5 women, average age = 29.5 +/- 8 years) and used an X-ray camera connected to a video acquisition card to obtain synchronized acoustic-radiologic data (25 images/s). The subjects were asked to swallow 10 ml of a barium suspension. Each sound component was associated with a specific position of the bolus and the anatomic structure that was moving. The average duration of the phar

Acoustic analysis of pathological cries, stridors and coughing sounds in infancy.

In the examination of respiratory pathological sound phenomena in infancy (pathological crying, stridor and coughing sounds), besides the subjective-auditive observations and traditional examination methods (X-ray, endoscopy), acoustic analysis, as a new branch of bioacoustics, may be of much help. The various pathological infant vocalizations originating from the air passageways are merely symptoms, but they may furnish important diagnostic clues. Approximately 200 recordings of pathological sound signals derived from 180 infants suffering from 40 different diseases or anomalies were analyzed

Are orthopaedic trauma surgeons at risk of occupational noise-induced hearing loss?

OBJECTIVES: Orthopaedic surgeons are at risk of occupational, noise-induced hearing loss due to exposure to instruments in the operating room. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether orthopaedic trauma procedures exceed recommended decibel (dB) limits. The secondary objective was to demonstrate which actions during a case create the highest sound levels. METHODS: Intraoperative recordings were taken during orthopaedic trauma surgeries and classified into open reduction internal fixation (ORIF), intramedullary nailing, closed reduction percutaneous pinning, external fixati

The Coupling between Ca2+ Channels and the Exocytotic Ca2+ Sensor at Hair Cell Ribbon Synapses Varies Tonotopically along the Mature Cochlea.

The cochlea processes auditory signals over a wide range of frequencies and intensities. However, the transfer characteristics at hair cell ribbon synapses are still poorly understood at different frequency locations along the cochlea. Using recordings from mature gerbils, we report here a surprisingly strong block of exocytosis by the slow Ca2+ buffer EGTA (10 mM) in basal hair cells tuned to high frequencies (∼30 kHz). In addition, using recordings from gerbil, mouse, and bullfrog auditory organs, we find that the spatial coupling between Ca2+ influx and exocytosis changes from nanodomain in

Auscultation System for Acquisition of Vascular Sounds - Towards Sound-Based Monitoring of the Carotid Artery.

INTRODUCTION: Atherosclerotic diseases of the carotid are a primary cause of cerebrovascular events such as stroke. For the diagnosis and monitoring angiography, ultrasound- or magnetic resonance-based imaging is used which requires costly hardware. In contrast, the auscultation of carotid sounds and screening for bruits - audible patterns related to turbulent blood flow - is a simple examination with comparably little technical demands. It can indicate atherosclerotic diseases and justify further diagnostics but is currently subjective and examiner dependent. METHODS: We propose an easy-to-u

[Use of a body acoustic probe and the conduction of brain stem potentials for the determination of sound conduction during tympanoplasty].

A new procedure of evoking brain stem potentials is introduced. Contrary to evoking brain stem potentials by acoustic stimulation via earphone or loudspeaker, we touch the middle ear apparatus at various locations using a piezoelectric transducer with a screwed-on probe, thus causing physiological movements within the sound conducting structures (Fig. 3). As a reaction to this kind of stimulation--1000 clicks with a duration of 0.1 ms were given--far field brain stem potentials can be recorded. The calibration of this special sound probe--not bigger than a pencil (Fig. 1)--was made by equalizi

The aortic closure sound in pure aortic insufficiency.

The second sound in aortic insufficiency has been described as accentuated, normal, or moderately diminished. A study of intracardiac phonocardiograms was performed to evaluate its intensity and to eliminate extracardiac factors. Pressure and intracardiac sound measurements were made in 28 patients undergoing diagnostic cardiac catheterization. Recordings were obtained above the aortic valve and within the left ventricle in 14 patients with normal aortic valves and 11 patients with aortic insufficiency uncomplicated by aortic stenosis. The amplitude of the aortic closure sound in the patients

Performance of an Automated Detection Algorithm to Assess Objective Pulsatile Tinnitus.

OBJECTIVES: In this paper we describe an automated detection algorithm that objectively detects pulsatile tinnitus (PT) and investigate its performance. DESIGN: Sound measurements were made with a sensitive microphone placed in the outer ear canal in 36 PT-patients referred to our tertiary clinic, along with a registration of the heart rate. A novel algorithm expressed the coherence between the recorded sound and heart rate as a pulsatility index. This index was determined for 6 octave bands of the recorded sound. We assessed the performance of the detection algorithm by comparing it with the

Long-Lasting Sound-Evoked Afterdischarge in the Auditory Midbrain.

Different forms of plasticity are known to play a critical role in the processing of information about sound. Here, we report a novel neural plastic response in the inferior colliculus, an auditory center in the midbrain of the auditory pathway. A vigorous, long-lasting sound-evoked afterdischarge (LSA) is seen in a subpopulation of both glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus of normal hearing mice. These neurons were identified with single unit recordings and optogenetics in vivo. The LSA can continue for up to several minutes after the offset of

Social anxiety, voice confrontation and voice recognition: A bilingual exploration.

Many people dislike the sound of their voices, especially when listening back to audio recordings (voice confrontation). Previous research reports that disliking the sound of one's voice is associated with elevated levels of social anxiety. The present study investigated the relationship between social anxiety and voice dislike and voice misrecognition among a bilingual population: Arabic (L1) and English (L2). Participants (N = 176) completed self-report measures of social anxiety and own voice liking. Additionally, they performed a novel own voice recognition task, assessing their ability to

New tracheal sound feature for apnoea analysis.

Sleep apnoea syndrome is common in the general population and is currently underdiagnosed. The aim of the present work was to develop a new tracheal sound feature for separation of apnoea events from non-apnoea time. Ten overnight recordings from apnoea patients containing 1,107 visually scored apnoea events totalling 7 h in duration and 72 h of non-apnoea time were included in the study. The feature was designed to describe the local spectral content of the sound signal. The median, maximum and mean smoothing of different time scales were compared in the feature extraction. Sound Measurement in Patient-Specific 3D Printed Bench Models of Venous Pulsatile Tinnitus.

HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize patient-specific flow models to be an adequate in vitro surrogate to allow for characterization of pulsatile tinnitus (PT) that affects three to five million Americans. BACKGROUND: PT, rhythmic sounds without an extracorporeal source that patients appreciate, can be caused by aberrant blood flow in large cerebral veins near the cochlea. To investigate the sound production mechanism, we created 3D printed flow models based on patient-specific cerebral venous anatomies. METHODS: Magnetic resonance angiography datasets from two patients with PT were used to generate p
