Killer whale (Orcinus orca) whistles from the western South Atlantic Ocean include high frequency signals.

Acoustic parameters of killer whale (Orcinus orca) whistles were described for the western South Atlantic Ocean and highlight the occurrence of high frequency whistles. Killer whale signals were recorded on December of 2012, when a pod of four individuals was observed harassing a group of sperm whales. The high frequency whistles were highly stereotyped and were modulated mostly at ultrasonic frequencies. Compared to other contour types, the high frequency whistles are characterized by higher bandwidths, shorter durations, fewer harmonics, and higher sweep rates. The results add to the knowled

Glottal opening and closing events investigated by electroglottography and super-high-speed video recordings.

Previous research has suggested that the peaks in the first derivative (dEGG) of the electroglottographic (EGG) signal are good approximate indicators of the events of glottal opening and closing. These findings were based on high-speed video (HSV) recordings with frame rates 10 times lower than the sampling frequencies of the corresponding EGG data. The present study attempts to corroborate these previous findings, utilizing super-HSV recordings. The HSV and EGG recordings (sampled at 27 and 44 kHz, respectively) of an excised canine larynx phonation were synchronized by an external TTL signa

Effect of source-tract acoustical coupling on the oscillation onset of the vocal folds.

This paper analyzes the interaction between the vocal folds and vocal tract at phonation onset due to the acoustical coupling between both systems. Data collected from a mechanical replica of the vocal folds show that changes in vocal tract length induce fluctuations in the oscillation threshold values of both subglottal pressure and frequency. Frequency jumps and maxima of the threshold pressure occur when the oscillation frequency is slightly above a vocal tract resonance. Both the downstream and upstream vocal tracts may produce those same effects. A simple mathematical model is next propos

Acoustical modeling of swallowing mechanism.

In this paper, a mathematical modeling of the swallowing sound generation is presented. To evaluate the model, its application on swallowing disorder (dysphagia) diagnosis is discussed. As a starting point, a simple linear time invariant model is assumed to represent the pharyngeal wall and tissue excited by a train of impulses. The modeling is approached by two different assumptions. In one approach, it is assumed that the impulse train, representing the neural activities to trigger swallow, is the same for both groups of control and dysphagic, and it is the pharyngeal model that accounts for

Wavelet transforms in the analysis of mechanical heart valve cavitation.

Cavitation is known to cause blood element damage and may introduce gaseous emboli into the cerebral circulation, increasing the patient's risk of stroke. Discovering methods to reduce the intensity of cavitation induced by mechanical heart valves (MHVs) has long been an area of interest. A novel approach for analyzing MHV cavitation is presented. A wavelet denoising method is explored because currently used analytical techniques fail to suitably unmask the cavitation signal from other valve closing sounds and noise detected with a hydrophone. Wavelet functions are used to denoise the cavitati

[Dysphonia: current methods of evaluation].

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review article was to provide an update on current techniques for evaluation of dysphonia in routine clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Recent medical and other scientific literature was reviewed and pertinent current theories concerning the physiology of laryngeal function described. RESULTS: Perceptual voice quality evaluation by a professional jury of listeners is still considered to be the most reliable and complete means of evaluating pathologic voice, even though it is difficult to perform in routine and the results lack reproducibility. The objective

Respiratory patterns and oxygen consumption in singing zebra finches.

Song production in birds is driven by temporally complex respiratory patterns. In zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), song consists of repetitions of a stereotyped sequence of distinct syllables (motif). Syllables correspond to distinct expiratory pulses, which alternate with short deep inspirations. We investigated the effect of the song motor pattern on respiration using a newly developed mask system to measure oxygen consumption while simultaneously monitoring subsyringeal air sac pressure. The metabolic cost of song is closely related to song duration (mean=85.7 microl O(2) g(-1) x min(-1

SIM--simultaneous inverse filtering and matching of a glottal flow model for acoustic speech signals.

A new method "simultaneous inverse filtering and model matching" (SIM) is proposed that allows one to calculate voice source measures without any user interaction. It is based on the discrete all-pole modeling (DAP) technique for inverse filtering (IF), which is modified to include a model of the glottal flow as integral part [LF model, Fant et al., STL-QPSR (Stockholm) 4/1985, 1-13 (1986)]. As the correct LF parameters are initially unknown, they are estimated in an iterative procedure using multi-dimensional optimization techniques that are initialized according to the results of an exhausti

Comparisons among aerodynamic, electroglottographic, and acoustic spectral measures of female voice.

This study examines measures of the glottal airflow waveform, the electroglottographic signal (EGG), amplitude differences between peaks in the acoustic spectrum, and observations of the spectral energy content of the third formant (F3), in terms of how they relate to one another. Twenty females with normal voices served as subjects. Both group and individual data were studied. Measurements were made for the vowel in two speech tasks: strings of the syllable /pae/and sustained phonation of /ae/, which were produced at two levels of vocal effort: comfortable and loud voice. The main results wer

Phagaquosonogram (PASG) diagnosis for cancer of gastric cardia. A preliminary study of 223 patients.

Phagaquosonographies (PASG) of 100 normal subjects and 223 patients with cardiac cancer (CC) were analyzed. The apparatus was self-designed and self-manufactured. The wave patterns and the pre-ejection period and other 8 quantitative indices in PASG were compared and patients with CC were found to have abnormal levels (P less than 0.01). The phagaquosonograms in 82 patients with esophageal, gastric or cardias (non-cancer) diseases served as controls. The PASG showed positive results in 97.3%, suspicious in 2.3% and negative in 0.4% of CC cases and 100% negative in the normal subjects. It was 1

On subglottal formant analysis.

When subglottal pressure signals which are recorded during normal speech production are spectrally analyzed, the frequency of the first spectral maximum appears to deviate appreciably from the first resonance frequency which has been reported in the literature and which stems from measurements of the acoustic impedance of the subglottal system. It is postulated that this is caused by the spectrum of the excitation function. This hypothesis is corroborated by a modeling study. Using an extended version of the well-known two-mass model of the vocal folds that can account for a glottal leak, it i

[Use of recording methods and sound analysis of cough in the study of sound phenomena associated with respiration].

The objective registration of the human body functions is one of the main tasks of the modern and prospective medicine. The registration of the heart, brain, muscles etc. activity have a long tradition. The registration of sound processes, for instance coughing was not solved completely despite their diagnostic importance. The authors worked out a new non invasive and precise method for cough sound registration and analysis which allows evaluation of the sound pattern, intensity and time duration. Application of this method for registration and analysis of the cry of new-borns gave rise to dou

Sound output of electronic laryngeal prostheses at room and body temperature.

An electronic laryngeal prosthesis, fully-implantable in the neck, is a desirable source of artificial voice. Emitted sound energy in a frequency range suitable for adult males and females must be of the correct period and intensity and rich in powerful harmonics. Any such device places severe demands on a bioencapsulant used to enclose the transducer. Location of the devices within the central neck demands a prosthesis-coating combination capable of passing sound energy at central body temperature. This study reports on four identical prostheses, coated with a polyvinylidene chloride, a copol

Development of the head, pinnae, and acoustical cues to sound location in a precocial species, the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus).

The morphology of the head and pinna shape the spatial and frequency dependence of sound propagation that give rise to the acoustic cues to sound source location. During early development, the physical dimensions of the head and pinna increase rapidly. Thus, the binaural (interaural time and level differences, ITD and ILD) and monaural (spectral shape) cues are also hypothesized to change rapidly. Complex interactions between the size and shape of the head and pinna limit the accuracy of simple acoustical models (e.g. spherical) and necessitate empirical measurements. Here, we measured the cue

Novel audio characteristic-dependent feature extraction and data augmentation methods for cough-based respiratory disease classification.

Respiratory diseases are one of the major health problems worldwide. Early diagnosis of the disease types is of vital importance. As one of the main symptoms of many respiratory diseases, cough may contain information about different pathological changes in the respiratory system. Therefore, many researchers have used cough sounds to diagnose different diseases through artificial intelligence in recent years. The acoustic features and data augmentation methods commonly used in speech tasks are used to achieve better performance. Although these methods are applicable, previous studies have not

A Chinese alligator in heliox: formant frequencies in a crocodilian.

Crocodilians are among the most vocal non-avian reptiles. Adults of both sexes produce loud vocalizations known as 'bellows' year round, with the highest rate during the mating season. Although the specific function of these vocalizations remains unclear, they may advertise the caller's body size, because relative size differences strongly affect courtship and territorial behaviour in crocodilians. In mammals and birds, a common mechanism for producing honest acoustic signals of body size is via formant frequencies (vocal tract resonances). To our knowledge, formants have to date never been do

Possible age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) and corresponding change in echolocation parameters in a stranded Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin.

The hearing and echolocation clicks of a stranded Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis) in Zhuhai, China, were studied. This animal had been repeatedly observed in the wild before it was stranded and its age was estimated to be ~40 years. The animal's hearing was measured using a non-invasive auditory evoked potential (AEP) method. Echolocation clicks produced by the dolphin were recorded when the animal was freely swimming in a 7.5 m (width)×22 m (length)×4.8 m (structural depth) pool with a water depth of ~2.5 m. The hearing and echolocation clicks of the studied dolphin were compa
