Insight into mechanisms of reduced orthostatic performance after exposure to microgravity: comparison of ground-based and space flight data.

Since the beginning of human spaceflight, the value of understanding mechanisms of physiological adaptation to microgravity became apparent to life scientists who were interested in maintining crew health and developing countermeasures agains adverse effects of the mission. However, several characteristics associated the the logistics of spaceflight presented significant limitations to the scientific study of human adaptation to microgravity. Because space missions are so infrequent and involve minimal numbers of crewmembers, meaninful statistical analysis of data are limited. Reproducibility

[Effect of short-term space flights on the activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and on the blood concentration of cyclic nucleotides and prostaglandins].

After short-term flights renal excretion of aldosterone increased, thus suggesting its enhanced production and metabolism. An adequate increase of aldosterone synthesis was accompanied by an increase of its concentration in blood. An inadequate activation of mineralocorticoids manifested as a lower concentration of blood aldosterone and a greater excretion of aldosterone in the urine. These differences in the mineralocorticoid activity were determined by the renin-angiotensin system whose activity was associated not only with fluid-electrolyte metabolism but also with changes in the concentrat

Chest Ultrasonography in Modern Day Extreme Settings: From Military Setting and Natural Disasters to Space Flights and Extreme Sports.

Chest ultrasonography (CU) is a noninvasive imaging technique able to provide an immediate diagnosis of the underlying aetiology of acute respiratory failure and traumatic chest injuries. Given the great technologies, it is now possible to perform accurate CU in remote and adverse environments including the combat field, extreme sport settings, and environmental disasters, as well as during space missions. Today, the usage of CU in the extreme emergency setting is more likely to occur, as this technique proved to be a fast diagnostic tool to assist resuscitation manoeuvres and interventional p

Blood volume regulating hormones, fluid and electrolyte modifications during 21 and 198-day space flights (Altair-MIR 1993).

During the Altair MIR '93 mission we studied several parameters involved in blood volume regulation. The experiment was done on two cosmonauts before (B-60, B-30), during (D6, D12, D18 for French and D7, D12, D17 for Russian) and after the flight (R+1, R+3 and R+7). Space flight durations were different for two cosmonauts: for the Russian the flight duration was 198 days and for the French 21 days. On board the MIR station only urinary (volume and electrolytes, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and catecholamines) and salivary (cGMP and cortisol) samples w

Detrimental Effects of Space Flight on the Lumbar Spine May Be Correlated to Baseline Degeneration: Insights From an Advanced MR Imaging Study.

INTRODUCTION: Pain in lower back is a common condition reported by astronauts, both during and after space missions. Investigating the alterations in the spine and the mechanisms driving these changes is essential for a deeper understanding of how microgravity impacts the human spine. This knowledge could also open pathways for therapeutic or preventive interventions. Nevertheless, there is a limited evidence regarding changes in intervertebral discs (IVDs) due to space travel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 2 astronauts were enrolled in a space travel. Before the space flight, a lower

Radiation transport modeling and assessment to better predict radiation exposure, dose, and toxicological effects to human organs on long duration space flights.

NASA is very interested in improving its ability to monitor and forecast the radiation levels that pose a health risk to space-walking astronauts as they construct the International Space Station and astronauts that will participate in long-term and deep-space missions. Human exploratory missions to the moon and Mars within the next quarter century, will expose crews to transient radiation from solar particle events which include high-energy galactic cosmic rays and high-energy protons. Because the radiation levels in space are high and solar activity is presently unpredictable, adequate shiel

[Effect of weightlessness and artificial gravitation on morphological manifestations of the adrenal cortex reaction in rats after space flight on board the biosatellite "Cosmos-936"].

Comparing the changes revealed in the adrenals of rats subjected to weightlessness and artificial gravitation, it has been stated that rotation of the animals in the centrifuge, while flying (with an acceleration of lg), prevents development of morphological stress reaction as a response to landing. After the effect of weightlessness, return to normal gravitation is accompanied with definite signs of an acute stress-reaction in the rat adrenal cortex. Differences in the adrenal reaction of the animals of the groups compared speak in favour of the fact that application of artificial gravitation

Regulation of Bone by Mechanical Loading, Sex Hormones, and Nerves: Integration of Such Regulatory Complexity and Implications for Bone Loss during Space Flight and Post-Menopausal Osteoporosis.

During evolution, the development of bone was critical for many species to thrive and function in the boundary conditions of Earth. Furthermore, bone also became a storehouse for calcium that could be mobilized for reproductive purposes in mammals and other species. The critical nature of bone for both function and reproductive needs during evolution in the context of the boundary conditions of Earth has led to complex regulatory mechanisms that require integration for optimization of this tissue across the lifespan. Three important regulatory variables include mechanical loading, sex hormones

Homo sapiens-A Species Not Designed for Space Flight: Health Risks in Low Earth Orbit and Beyond, Including Potential Risks When Traveling beyond the Geomagnetic Field of Earth.

Homo sapiens and their predecessors evolved in the context of the boundary conditions of Earth, including a 1 g gravity and a geomagnetic field (GMF). These variables, plus others, led to complex organisms that evolved under a defined set of conditions and define how humans will respond to space flight, a circumstance that could not have been anticipated by evolution. Over the past ~60 years, space flight and living in low Earth orbit (LEO) have revealed that astronauts are impacted to varying degrees by such new environments. In addition, it has been noted that astronauts are quite heterogene

Monitoring antioxidant defenses and free radical production in space-flight, aviation and railway engine operators, for the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress, immunological impairment, and pre-mature cell aging.

Degenerative diseases, immune impairment, and premature ageing commonly affect professional categories exposed to severe environmental and psychological stress. Among these, cosmonauts routinely experience extreme conditions due to microgravity, space radiation, altered oxygen supply, physical and mental fatigue during training, spaceflight, and post-flight. Long route aviation pilots display elevated oncogenic risk, connected with cosmic radiation overexposure, and high mortality rates for cardiovascular causes. Engine drivers, like pilots, are affected by health consequences of psycho-emotio

Analog habitat health and safety protocol: replicable standard system for analyzing data related to human factors in simulations.

As space exploration emerges as the next frontier for humanity, challenges related to health and safety in isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments become increasingly relevant. This study examines the development of integrated monitoring protocols to establish a replicable standard for collecting and analyzing human factors indicators in both analogous and real space missions, adapting existing approaches from polar environments. A one-month analog mission was conducted with a six-member crew, during which protocols were designed for pre-, during-, and post-mission phases. The metho

Spaceflight Respiratory System from a Nursing Perspective.

The pulmonary system is sensitive to aerospace exposures, including changes in atmospheric composition and pressure, alterations in gravitational forces, and exposure to radiation and toxins. Providing nursing care in the aerospace environment requires understanding of pulmonary conditions such as high-altitude pulmonary edema, decompression-related illness and injury, arterial gas embolism, acceleration atelectasis, hypoxia, hypercapnia, and exposure syndromes. In addition to these conditions, we discuss changes in pulmonary physiology in microgravity, in-flight nursing medical capabilities,

Distributions of energy imparted to a micro-volume by secondary charged fragments of nuclear interactions in space radiation field.

The field of cosmic radiation at low-Earth orbit (LEO) has a complex composition. It always contains a component of secondary charged particles, formed by the products of nuclear interactions of the primary high-energy radiation with the nuclei of spacecraft's shielding material, electronic components and biological matter on board. Generation of this secondary radiation can be observed in some track detectors in the form of "stars" formed by tracks-fragments with a common vertex. The energy absorbed by the medium in the region adjacent to the interaction vertex can reach abnormally high value

Suited versus unsuited analog astronaut performance using the Aouda.X space suit simulator: the DELTA experiment of MARS2013.

Space suit simulators are used for extravehicular activities (EVAs) during Mars analog missions. Flight planning and EVA productivity require accurate time estimates of activities to be performed with such simulators, such as experiment execution or traverse walking. We present a benchmarking methodology for the Aouda.X space suit simulator of the Austrian Space Forum. By measuring and comparing the times needed to perform a set of 10 test activities with and without Aouda.X, an average time delay was derived in the form of a multiplicative factor. This statistical value (a second-over-second
