Spatial and spatio-temporal clustering of overall and serovar-specific Leptospira microscopic agglutination test (MAT) seropositivity among dogs in the United States from 2000 through 2007.

Leptospirosis is a re-emerging disease of dogs in the United States (U.S.). This paper reports the findings of a retrospective study conducted to determine if seroreactivity to Leptospira microscopic agglutination test (MAT) among dogs in the U.S. clustered in space and time. The study utilized canine sera submitted to a commercial laboratory for leptospiral MAT from January 2000 through December 2007. There were 31,869 serum samples submitted by veterinarians from 3156 zip code locations across the U.S. Results of MAT were considered positive at titers of > or = 1:1600. Spatial and spatial-te

[Application of space-time scan statistics in early warning of distribution of schistosome infected Oncomelania hupensis snails].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the application of space-time scan statistics in the early warning of distribution of schistosome infected Oncomelania hupensis snails. METHODS: The data of distribution of infected snails in Anhui Province from 2006 to 2012 were collected, and a spatial database was established by ArcGIS 9.3. The prospective spatial-temporal cluster analysis was done by SaTscan 9.1.1 at the village level. RESULTS: Four space-time clusters, which were distributed over the Yangtze River and its branch rivers, were detected. CONCLUSION: The space-time scan statistics could detect the dis

Characteristics of child daycare centres associated with clustering of major enteropathogens.

Insights into transmission dynamics of enteropathogens in children attending daycare are limited. Here we aimed at identifying daycare centre (DCC) characteristics associated with time-clustered occurrence of enteropathogens in DCC-attending children. For this purpose, we used the KIzSS network, which comprises 43 DCCs that participated in infectious disease surveillance in The Netherlands during February 2010-February 2013. Space-time scan statistics were used to identify clusters of rotavirus, norovirus, astrovirus, Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium spp. in a two-dimensional DCC characteri

Epidemiology and genetics of neural tube defects: an application of the Utah Genealogical Data Base.

The distribution and prevalence of births with neural tube defects in Utah from 1940 to 1979 are analyzed with regard to prevalence rates, secondary sex ratios, seasonality, yearly rates, and time-space clustering. The overall prevalence rate of 1.00 per thousand live births is comparable to that of other populations in the western United States. Analysis of sex ratios indicates a substantially higher proportion of females than males. No significant secular trends or time-space clustering are observed. No seasonality is seen for spina bifida; however, the anencephaly cases are delivered more f

Descriptive epidemiology of equine influenza in India (2008-2009): temporal and spatial trends.

Equine influenza is a contagious viral disease that affects all members of the family Equidae, i.e., horses, donkeys and mules. The authors describe the pattern of equine influenza outbreaks in a number of states of India from July 2008 to June 2009. The disease was first reported in June 2008 in Katra (Jammu and Kashmir) and spread to ten other states within a year. All outbreaks of equine influenza in the various states were confirmed by laboratory investigations (virus isolation and/or serological confirmation based on haemagglutination inhibition [HI] assays of paired samples) before decla

Temporal-spatial-social parameters in the spread of contagious disease.

A conceptual theoretical model was built on the basis of prominent concepts of the generally accepted knowledge on the spread of contagious disease. Subsequently, the model was applied to a real epidemic of variola minor (the mild form of smallpox) and four phases of the epidemic were disclosed. The phases discriminated themselves through their relationships to invasion of certain city subdivisions and rural districts and particularly, through the type of social units involved and the type of persons introducing the disease into these units. Introduction of variola minor into day schools with

A generalised scan statistic test for the detection of clusters.

The scan statistic can be used for the testing of clusters of disease in time. However, it is not valid in situations in which there is some change in the population at risk or in the detection rate of the disorder. Furthermore, it cannot distinguish between a cluster due to the changing pattern of known risk factors for the disease and one due to other causes. A generalised scan statistic is proposed which overcomes these limitations. Its use is illustrated with previously published birth defects data.

Impact and trend of COVID-19 in the Brazilian prison system: an ecological study.

Given the rapid spread of new coronavirus within the prison system, this study's objective was to identify spatial clusters for the occurrence of COVID-19 in the incarcerated population and analyze temporal trends of confirmed cases in the Brazilian prison system. This ecological study considered the five Brazilian macro-regions to be units of analysis, with its 26 states and the Federal District. The population was composed of all COVID-19 cases confirmed from April 14th to August 31st, 2020. The source used to collect data was the COVID-19 Monitoring Panel from the National Prison Department

[The spatial-temporal structure of fluctuations in tick-borne encephalitis morbidity in the Maritime Territory].

The annual dynamics of the epidemic process in tick-borne encephalitis and its spread in the Maritime Territory, endemic for this infection, have been studied. The study has shown that in the central mountainous regions grown with boreal forest, in contrast to the rest of this focal area, a higher morbidity level and more severe outcomes of this infection are observed. This indicates that in those regions more ancient nuclei of the endemic area of this infection with the main stable elements of the natural focus are preserved.

Seroepidemiology of adult T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV-I/ATLV): origin of virus carriers in Japan.

There are two large clusters of HTLV-I/ATLV carriers in the world. One large endemic area could be Africa, but available information is not yet sufficient to prove this. The other definitely large endemic area is Japan. Much smaller endemic areas and sporadic cases of the virus-carriers have been found in many parts of the world, including the Caribbean basin and Taiwan. Where did ATL virus carriers in Japan come from? From seroepidemiological studies, it is postulated that the carriers originated among Jomon people, who were the earliest inhabitants of Japan in 300 to 10,000 B.C. or earlier.

An objective reconstruction of the chain of contagion.

North's clustering method, which is based on a much used ecological model, the nearest neighbor distance, was applied to the objective reconstruction of the chain of household-to-household transmission of variola minor (the mild form of smallpox). The discrete within-household outbreaks were considered as points which were ordered in a time sequence using a 10-40 day interval between introduction of the disease into a source household and a receptor household. The closer points in the plane were assumed to have a larger probability of being links of a chain of household-to-household spread of

Variola minor in Braganca Paulista County, 1956: household aggregation of the disease and the influence of household size on the attack rate.

Household aggregation of cases, one possible characteristic of person-to-person transmitted disease, was formally tested in one epidemic of variola minor by using a pair statistic. A significant result was found for all households as well as for households grouped by the type of environment, or by the phase of the epidemic growth in time. Secondary attack rates, when related to household size (number of susceptibles) showed only a marginal trend in rural households but no trend in urban or semi-rural households.

Epidemic patterns of infectious diseases from the results of the surveillance of infectious diseases in Japan.

Epidemic patterns of 12 infectious diseases based on the data derived from the surveillance system of infectious diseases in Japan are analyzed. Weekly numbers of patients per one monitor station (general clinics and hospitals) are calculated by prefecture. Based on these data, the patterns of epidemic are classified into five categories: Category 1, nationwide outbreak of short duration (rotavirus enteritis, hand-foot-mouth disease and herpangina); Category 2, nationwide outbreak of long duration (varicella); Category 3, concurrent outbreaks in several districts (rubella and erythema infectio

Use of variograms to detect critical spatial distances for the Knox's test.

We aimed to find critical spatial distances (as an input quantity for the Knox's test) using geostatistical methods. The spatiotemporal data set included all individual-chamois cases of scabies observed in Styrian chamois populations in 137 of 2837 game preserves in Styria (a province in the south of Austria) over the time period between 1952 and 1998. Theoretical variogram models were fitted to empirical variograms, which were calculated for cycles of 5 years. The unit of analysis was the mean quadratic deviation between individual-chamois cases of scabies. The "range" (which represents the t
