First Report of Blood Parasites in Black-Capped Sparrow (Arremon abeillei) from Neotropical Dry Deciduous Forest.

Avian haemosporidian parasites (Order: Haemosporida) are a diverse group of microorganisms that spend part of their life cycle in the erythrocytes of avian hosts. Parasite presence has been confirmed in all Ecuadorian regions, but some ecosystems, such as the deciduous dry forest of the Coastal region, have not been evaluated for parasite presence. Data on presence or absence, and prevalence, of haemosporidian blood parasites were obtained from avian blood samples collected in two different dry deciduous forests in Guayaquil, Ecuador: Bosque Protector Prosperina and Área Nacional de Recreación

Adaptive host-abandonment of ectoparasites before fledging? Within-brood distribution of nest mites in house sparrow broods.

We studied the within-brood distribution of a haematophagous mite Pellonyssus reedi living on nestling house sparrows (Passer domesticus) near the time of fledging. We measured the natural level of infestation of individual nestlings, and determined the feeding efficiency of mites, by scoring their feeding status. Within-brood distribution of mite loads was unrelated to nestling body mass, tarsus length, or immunocompetence. These results did not support parasite preference for large or susceptible hosts. Mite feeding-efficiency was also unrelated to these nestling characteristics, confirming

Effect of melatonin on circadian rhythm, locomotor activity and body temperature in the intact house sparrow, Japanese quail and owl.

We compared the effect of melatonin on circadian rhythm, body temperature, and locomotion in the intact house sparrow, Japanese quail and owl. Daily treatment with melatonin at a fixed time did not entrain the free-running rhythm of locomotor activity in the house sparrow and the disrupted rhythm in Japanese quail under constant dim light. However, melatonin clearly inhibited movement for several hours after treatment. The duration of resting after injection of melatonin was dose-dependent. Body temperature was significantly decreased after melatonin treatment, the effect being more potent dur

Characterization of the host response in systemic isosporosis (atoxoplasmosis) in a colony of captive American goldfinches (Spinus tristis) and house sparrows (Passer domesticus).

Systemic isosporosis, also known as atoxoplasmosis, is a common parasitic disease of passerines. Infection is thought to be endemic in wild birds with fulminant, fatal disease occurring under the influence of stress, concurrent infections, or immunosuppression. Here, we describe the histologic and immunohistochemical characteristics of the cellular infiltrate occurring in captive colonies of American goldfinches and house sparrows. Necropsies were performed on 9 birds, and histologic examination was performed on the intestines of 7 additional birds. Lesions were most severe in the proximal sma

Adaptive sliding mode controller based on improved Sparrow search algorithm for tracking control of human lower limb exoskeleton.

This study presents an Adaptive Sliding Mode Controller enhanced by an Improved Sparrow Search Algorithm (ISSA-SMC) for accurate motion tracking of lower-limb assistive exoskeletons. By incorporating human joint torque inputs into the exoskeleton's dynamic model, ISSA-SMC achieves real-time adaptation to user variability, external disturbances, and modeling uncertainties. A softmax strategy combined with the branch and bound method efficiently optimizes controller parameters, enhancing tracking accuracy and robustness with low computational cost. Effectiveness is validated through simulations

The Modified Sparrow Search Algorithm with Brown Motion and Levy Flight Strategy for the Class Integration Test Order Generation Problem.

Software testing identifies potential errors and defects in software. A crucial component of software testing is integration testing, and the generation of class integration test orders (CITOs) is a critical topic in integration testing. The research shows that search-based algorithms can solve this problem effectively. As a novel search-based algorithm, the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) is good at finding the optimal to optimization problems, but it has drawbacks like weak population variety later on and the tendency to easily fall into the local optimum. To overcome its shortcomings, a modi

Season and migration alters the corticosterone response to capture and handling in an Arctic migrant, the white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii).

The Gambel's race of white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii) migrates each year from their wintering grounds in the Southwestern United States to the Arctic to breed. Associated with this migration is a change in both the nonstressed and the stress-induced levels of circulating plasma corticosterone. Birds were captured at two sites on their wintering grounds (New Mexico and Arizona). Although stress-induced corticosterone levels were elevated at each site compared to nonstressed levels, there were no differences between wintering sites. These were also similar to levels in bir

Neuroendocrine signatures of urban aggression: Arginine vasotocin (AVT) receptor distribution and expression in male song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) brain.

Urbanization drastically alters environments, presenting wildlife with novel challenges to which they must adjust to persist. Often, an animal's first response to environmental change is to shift behavior, which requires processing environmental cues into neural signals that can govern adaptive behavior. However, the neural mechanisms underpinning behavioral responses to urbanization are largely unresolved. During the breeding season, urban songbirds of several species are more aggressive than their rural counterparts. Among the many neural mechanisms that regulate aspects of aggression, argin

Ammonia and ethanol detection via an electronic nose utilizing a bionic chamber and a sparrow search algorithm-optimized backpropagation neural network.

Ammonia is widely acknowledged to be a stressor and one of the most detrimental gases in animal enclosures. In livestock- and poultry-breeding facilities, a precise, rapid, and affordable method for detecting ammonia concentrations is essential. We design and develop an electronic nose system containing a bionic chamber that imitates the nasal-cavity structure of humans and canines. The sensors are positioned based on fluid simulation results. Response data for ammonia and ethanol gases and the response/ recovery times of an ammonia sensor under three concentrations are collected using the ele

Acute stress and restricted diet reduce bill-mediated heat dissipation in the song sparrow (Melospiza melodia): implications for optimal thermoregulation.

We used thermal imaging to show that two environmental factors - acute stress and diet - influence thermoregulatory performance of a known thermal window, the avian bill. The bill plays important roles in thermoregulation and water balance. Given that heat loss through the bill is adjustable through vasoconstriction and vasodilation, and acute stress can cause vasoconstriction in peripheral body surfaces, we hypothesized that stress may influence the bill's role as a thermal window. We further hypothesized that diet influences heat dissipation from the bill, given that body condition influence

Human antibodies against antigens of the sparrow, blackbird, weaver finch, canary, budgerigar, pigeon and hen using the indirect immunofluorescent technique.

Detection of antibodies against various birds, particularly against exotic birds, can be facilitated using the sensitive immunofluorescent technique on avian fixed-intestine cryostat sections. Different fluorescent patterns corresponding to different human anti-avian antibodies have been observed. Sixty of 100 human sera containing antibodies against one avian species, predominantly pigeon, reacted also with all other avian species intestines; the remaining forty were more specific and reacted with a few species only. Cross reactions with antigens in song bird intestines indicated the presence

Seasonal changes in the reproductive system of the female white-crowned sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii, in captivity and in the field. 2. The incubation patch.

The ventral apterium of free-living female White-crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii) becomes an incubation patch during the breeding season. At this time, it loses its feathers, increases in wet and defatted dry weight, and undergoes marked histological alterations. At times of year other than the breeding season, the apterium consists of a low squamous epidermis and a thin, poorly vascularized dermis of dense connective tissue. The dermis is separated from subcutaneous tissue by an internal elastic lamina. During the breeding season, the epidermis is a proliferative, stratified

Comparison of circadian oscillation of melatonin release in pineal cells of house sparrow, pigeon and Japanese quail, using cell perfusion systems.

We compared the circadian oscillation of melatonin release from cultured pineal cells in Japanese quail, pigeon and house sparrow, to determine whether the pineal gland of these species retains the circadian oscillator function in vitro. After dissociated pineal cells have been cultured for 4 days under 12 h: 12 h light-dark (LD) cycle, they were perfused at a flow rate of 0.25 ml/h for 6-7 days under LD or constant darkness (DD). Melatonin release increased during the dark period and low during the light period in all pineal cell cultures. Under DD conditions, the circadian rhythm of melatoni

Developmental stress has sex-specific effects on nestling growth and adult metabolic rates but no effect on adult body size or body composition in song sparrows.

Variation in the prenatal and postnatal environments can have long-term effects on adult phenotype. In humans and other animals, exposure to stressors can lead to long-term changes in physiology. These changes may predispose individuals to disease, especially disorders involving energy metabolism. In addition, by permanently altering metabolic rates and energy requirements, such effects could have important fitness consequences. We determined the effects of early-life food restriction and corticosterone (CORT) treatment on growth and adult body size, body composition (assessed via quantitative

Resistance to gapeworm parasite has both additive and dominant genetic components in house sparrows, with evolutionary consequences for ability to respond to parasite challenge.

Host-parasite relationships are likely to change over the coming decades in response to climate change and increased anthropogenic stressors. Understanding the genetic architecture of parasite resistance will aid prediction of species' responses to intensified parasite challenge. The gapeworm "Syngamus trachea" is prevalent in natural bird populations and causes symptomatic infections ranging from mild to severe. The parasite may affect ecological processes by curtailing bird populations and is important due to its propensity to spread to commercially farmed birds. Our large-scale data set on

Effect of withdrawing long days from male American tree sparrows (Spizella arborea): implications for understanding thyroid-dependent programming of seasonal reproduction and postnuptial molt.

In previous studies, we withdrew thyroid hormones by thyroidectomy before, at, or after the onset of photostimulation and showed that male American tree sparrows (Spizella arborea) are programmed for seasonal reproduction and postnuptial molt by or before Week 3 on long days. In this corollary study, we withdrew long days before or after the control circuits had been programmed. After 1 day to 4 wk on long days, groups of thyroid-intact males were returned to short days until Week 7, when they were moved to constant light and evaluated for photosensitivity or photorefractoriness and postnuptia

Research on seedling grading of Platycladus orientalis based on fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm improved by genetic sparrow family search optimization.

Platycladus orientalis seedlings possess significant ecological and economic value, but large individual quality variation often leads to poor post-transplant performance. Existing grading standards are oversimplified with ambiguous boundaries. In this study, eight-month-old P. orientalis seedlings were evaluated using in situ electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for non-destructive root assessment, combined with three aboveground morphological parameters (stem diameter, plant height, branch number). These five indices served as reliable quality predictors. To overcome the limitations of co

Widespread Distribution of Toxic Trace Elements in House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) Feathers: Evidence of a Homogeneous Urban Signature in a Petroleum-Industrial Hub.

Trace element pollution in industrial urban environments poses a significant threat to wildlife and human health, yet the spatial resolution of these contaminants is often poorly defined. This study investigated the distance-dependent accumulation of toxic trace elements-lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and mercury (Hg)-in the feathers of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) across urban and rural gradients in Gachsaran County, Iran, a major center for oil extraction. A stratified spatial design was employed, establishing concentric buffer zones at 500, 1000, and 1500 m fr
