Exome sequencing in severe non-syndromic specific learning and language disorders in a French cohort.

BACKGROUND: Specific learning disorders (SLDs) affect approximately 5% of school-age children. In France, genetic investigations of complex non-syndromic SLD cases include chromosomal microarray analysis and fragile X syndrome testing. However, the examples of genes being described in intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder and also reported in patients with complex and severe SLDs are multiplying. International efforts using exome sequencing have identified monogenic diseases that explain severe SLDs in some instances. The aim of our study was to investigate the value of exome seq

The relationship between digit ratio (2D:4D) and intelligence levels in specific learning disorders.

BACKGROUND: Higher prenatal testosterone exposure regulates brain development and affects learning and intelligence directly. The digit ratio (2D:4D) is regarded as an indicator of prenatal testosterone exposure. This study aims to investigate the 2D:4D ratios and intelligence levels in individuals with specific learning disorders (SLD) and compare the ratios with healthy subjects. METHODS: The study included a total of 117 patients diagnosed with SLD and 67 healthy controls. We measured the 2D:4D ratios and administered the Wechsler-Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised to assess intellige

Improvement of Self-Esteem in Children with Specific Learning Disorders after Donkey-Assisted Therapy.

Dyslexia is a learning disorder related to receptive language characterized by difficulties with decoding, fluent word recognition, automatic naming skills and/or reading comprehension skills. It usually leads to severe functional impairment and the permanent need for support and interventions. Since animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) have been found to improve physical, emotional, cognitive and/or social functioning in humans, the aim of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of onotherapy on children with SLD by improving self-esteem and school performance. Sixteen patients with a

Specific Learning Disorders: Variation Analysis of 15 Candidate Genes in 9 Multiplex Families.

Background and Objectives: Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) is a complex neurobiological disorder characterized by a persistent difficult in reading (dyslexia), written expression (dysgraphia), and mathematics (dyscalculia). The hereditary and genetic component is one of the underlying causes of SLD, but the relationship between genes and the environment should be considered. Several genetic studies were performed in different populations to identify causative genes. Materials and Methods: Here, we show the analysis of 9 multiplex families with at least 2 individuals diagnosed with SLD per fam

[The private pediatrician in the clinical care pathway for children affected by specific learning disorders in France].

The clinical care pathway for children presenting specific learning disorders, including language, motor coordination, and attention disorders is based on different levels of assessment by the professionals involved. In France, a first step of organization was established in 2002 by founding of a network of structures devoted to clinical assessment of complex cases, research, and teaching for the professionals involved. Although this organization proved to contribute an essential service, the demand largely exceeded the availability of access. A three-level organization was therefore suggested

Reduced autobiographical memory specificity is associated with impaired discrimination learning in anxiety disorder patients.

Associative learning plays an important role in the development of anxiety disorders, but a thorough understanding of the variables that impact such learning is still lacking. We investigated whether individual differences in autobiographical memory specificity are related to discrimination learning and generalization. In an associative learning task, participants learned the association between two pictures of female faces and a non-aversive outcome. Subsequently, six morphed pictures functioning as generalization stimuli (GSs) were introduced. In a sample of healthy participants (Study 1), w

Sociodemographic risk factors and WISC-IV cognitive profile in children with specific learning disorder: a case-control study.

Specific learning disorder (SLD) stems from genetic, environmental, and cognitive factors; however, their relative contributions and the diagnostic validity of cognitive measures remain unclear. This case-control study compared 35 children aged 8-12 diagnosed with SLD according to DSM-5-TR criteria with 35 healthy controls of comparable age and sex. Sociodemographic characteristics, developmental history, and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-IV (WISC-IV) profiles were examined using t-tests, chi-square analysis, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, and Firth-penalized logi

Sleep, executive functions, and functional impairment in children with specific learning disorder: An investigation of the mediating pathways.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep problems and executive dysfunction are associated with functional impairment in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. In this study, we aimed to investigate these aspects in children with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) and SLD with comorbid Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), while also evaluating differences with typically developing (TD) children. Our study hypothesizes that children with SLD, especially those with comorbid ADHD, face greater sleep disturbances and executive function challenges compared to TD peers. We also propose that sleep disturbanc

Professor and Peer Perceptions of Requests for Academic Accommodations in College: An Examination of ADHD and Specific Learning Disorder.

University students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorder (SLD) have higher rates of academic difficulty than their unaffected peers. Thus, some academic accommodations may be useful to them. However, research suggests that college students are hesitant to use their approved academic accommodations for fear of negative perceptions. The aim of the current study was to examine the perceptions of professors and fellow college students (i.e., peers) who were presented with a vignette depicting a fictitious student requesting an academic accommodation.
