Acoustic neuroma: deterioration of speech discrimination related to thresholds in pure-tone audiometry.

Pure-tone and speech audiometry were performed in 231 patients with a unilateral acoustic neuroma. Tumor sizes were obtained through imaging. Audiometric parameters, such as the mean pure-tone thresholds, the maximum discrimination, the slope of the speech audiogram, the roll-over index and the difference between the speech reception threshold and the Fletcher index, were studied and compared with data in the literature. Results showed that patients with an acoustic neuroma have worse speech discrimination than can be expected from the pure-tone audiogram. However, the results presented here i

Objective speech outcomes after surgical treatment for oral cancer: An acoustic analysis of a spontaneous speech corpus containing 32.850 tokens.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment for oral cancer leads to lasting changes of the vocal tract and individuals treated for oral cancer (ITOC) often experience speech problems. The purpose of this study was to analyse the acoustic properties of the spontaneous speech of individuals who were surgically treated for oral cancer. It was investigated (1) how key spectral measures of articulation change post-treatment; (2) whether changes are more related to target manner or place of articulation; and (3) how spectral measures develop at various time points following treatment. METHOD: A corpus consis

Music Is Quasi-Rhythmic Too: Comparing Bandwidth in Speech and Music Acoustic Modulation Spectra.

Speech and music both unfold over time. However, these dynamics are perceived quite differently: music as rhythmic, and speech as quasi-rhythmic. Here, we aim to identify whether this distinction between rhythm and quasi-rhythm is sourced from the raw acoustic waveform by analyzing the modulation spectrum of the acoustic envelope. We analyzed several large corpora on three scales: the coarsest scale containing recordings of each corpus, the intermediate scale of individual speakers/songs, and the finest scale of individual sentences or short musical segments. We confirm previous findings that

Perceived Naturalness and Acoustic Characteristics of Habitual Versus Clear Speech for Individuals With Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: This study examined the impact of clear speech on perceived naturalness. We compared habitual speech (HS), untrained clear speech (UCS), and clear speech after a brief training (trained clear speech [TCS]) and examined whether acoustic variables differed between conditions and predicted naturalness. METHOD: Twelve adult female talkers read sentences in three conditions (HS, UCS, TCS). Twenty-eight normal-hearing adults rated naturalness on a 1-9 scale. Along with naturalness, acoustic measures of speech rate, number of pauses, and pause duration were obtained and compared between spe

Beyond acoustic features: Incorporating linguistic variables in automatic speech analysis for depression detection.

BACKGROUND: Most research on automatic speech analysis (ASA) has focused on acoustic features, while the potential of linguistic markers remains underexplored, particularly in clinically diagnosed, non-English-speaking populations. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the integration of acoustic and linguistic markers for detecting depression in a Spanish-speaking clinical sample. METHODS: The sample comprised 151 participants: 80 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) or persistent depressive disorder (PDD) recruited from the Psychiatry Department of Vall d'Hebron University Hospital and

Acoustic speech features are associated with late-life depression and apathy symptoms: Preliminary findings.

BACKGROUND: Late-life depression (LLD) is a heterogenous disorder related to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative processes, raising a need for the development of novel biomarkers. We sought to provide preliminary evidence for acoustic speech signatures sensitive to LLD and their relationship to depressive dimensions. METHODS: Forty patients (24 female, aged 65-82 years) were assessed with the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Vocal features were extracted from speech samples (reading a pre-written text) and tested as classifiers of LLD using random forest and XGBoost models. Post hoc anal

Visible pre-acoustic lip motion aids listeners' judgments of speech onset times.

Interlocutors in conversation coordinate to achieve very short transitions between acoustic turns. The mechanisms supporting this coordination remain an area of active investigation. A large body of work has considered the cues that might clue next speakers (i.e., interlocutors awaiting their upcoming turn in conversation) that the floor is about to be yielded. Less attention has been given to the cues that next speakers might emit when preparing to take the floor. Most work that has considered cues from next speakers has emphasized manual gestures and nonspeech facial movements, and it has se

Harnessing acoustic speech parameters to decipher amyloid status in individuals with mild cognitive impairment.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by a gradual decline in cognitive functions. Currently, there are no effective treatments for AD, underscoring the importance of identifying individuals in the preclinical stages of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to enable early interventions. Among the neuropathological events associated with the onset of the disease is the accumulation of amyloid protein in the brain, which correlates with decreased levels of Aβ42 peptide in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Consequently, the development of non-invasive, low-cost, and easy

Acoustic Characterization of the Voice With a Tracheoesophageal Speech in Laryngectomized Patients. Similarities and Differences With the Laryngeal Voice.

BACKGROUND: Voice with tracheoesophageal speech (TES) is an effective, widely recognized option to restore the ability of oral communication to laryngectomized patients. In this study, we try to characterize the TES, taking account different variables and making an acoustic analysis of voice with TES versus laryngeal voice (LV). METHODS: We compare different acoustic and subjective variables like GRABS or VHI in 34 patients with TES and 31 controls with LV. RESULTS: Patients with TES reach a good quality of voice with F0, F1, F2, F3, Jitter, Shimmer, and Yanahigara test similar to control gr

Investigating Acoustic Correlates of Intelligibility Gains and Losses During Slowed Speech: A Hybridization Approach.

Purpose This exploratory study sought to identify acoustic variables explaining rate-related variation in intelligibility for speakers with dysarthria secondary to multiple sclerosis. Method Seven speakers with dysarthria due to multiple sclerosis produced the same set of Harvard sentences at habitual and slow rates. Speakers were selected from a larger corpus on the basis of rate-related intelligibility characteristics. Four speakers demonstrated improved intelligibility and three speakers demonstrated reduced intelligibility when rate was slowed. A speech analysis resynthesis paradigm termed

Late cortical tracking of ignored speech facilitates neural selectivity in acoustically challenging conditions.

Listening requires selective neural processing of the incoming sound mixture, which in humans is borne out by a surprisingly clean representation of attended-only speech in auditory cortex. How this neural selectivity is achieved even at negative signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) remains unclear. We show that, under such conditions, a late cortical representation (i.e., neural tracking) of the ignored acoustic signal is key to successful separation of attended and distracting talkers (i.e., neural selectivity). We recorded and modeled the electroencephalographic response of 18 participants who atte

Automatic identification of hypernasality in normal and cleft lip and palate patients with acoustic analysis of speech.

Hypernasality is seen in cleft lip and palate patients who had undergone repair surgery as a consequence of velopharyngeal insufficiency. Hypernasality has been studied by evaluation of perturbation, noise measures, and cepstral analysis of speech. In this study, feature extraction and analysis were performed during running speech using six different sentences. Jitter, shimmer, Mel frequency cepstral coefficients, bionic wavelet transform entropy, and bionic wavelet transform energy were calculated. Support vector machines were employed for classification of data to normal or hypernasal. Final

Speech privacy and annoyance considerations in the acoustic environment of passenger cars of high-speed trains.

It is necessary to consider not only annoyance of interior noises but also speech privacy to achieve acoustic comfort in a passenger car of a high-speed train because speech from other passengers can be annoying. This study aimed to explore an optimal acoustic environment to satisfy speech privacy and reduce annoyance in a passenger car. Two experiments were conducted using speech sources and compartment noise of a high speed train with varying speech-to-noise ratios (SNRA) and background noise levels (BNL). Speech intelligibility was tested in experiment I, and in experiment II, perceived spe

Logopenic and nonfluent variants of primary progressive aphasia are differentiated by acoustic measures of speech production.

Differentiation of logopenic (lvPPA) and nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA) variants of Primary Progressive Aphasia is important yet remains challenging since it hinges on expert based evaluation of speech and language production. In this study acoustic measures of speech in conjunction with voxel-based morphometry were used to determine the success of the measures as an adjunct to diagnosis and to explore the neural basis of apraxia of speech in nfvPPA. Forty-one patients (21 lvPPA, 20 nfvPPA) were recruited from a consecutive sample with suspected frontotemporal dementia. Patients were diagnosed

Speech acoustic markers of early stage and prodromal Huntington's disease: a marker of disease onset?

Speech disturbances (e.g., altered prosody) have been described in symptomatic Huntington's Disease (HD) individuals, however, the extent to which speech changes in gene positive pre-manifest (PreHD) individuals is largely unknown. The speech of individuals carrying the mutant HTT gene is a behavioural/motor/cognitive marker demonstrating some potential as an objective indicator of early HD onset and disease progression. Speech samples were acquired from 30 individuals carrying the mutant HTT gene (13 PreHD, 17 early stage HD) and 15 matched controls. Participants read a passage, produced a mo

Effects of transitory lingual nerve impairment on speech: an acoustic study of sibilant sound /s/.

By measuring spectral characteristics of the sibilant /s/ this study investigated whether the reduced orosensory feedback caused by lingual nerve impairment affects the acoustics and articulation of sibilants. A further goal was to examine speakers' capability to compensate for the deviant control of the delicate movements required for the proper production of /s/ by experimentally modifying the function of the tongue in a way that reduces the necessary somatosensory information in articulation. Five healthy men with no speech, language or hearing abnormalities were enrolled. They produced the

Aerodynamic and acoustical measures of speech, operatic, and Broadway vocal styles in a professional female singer.

Understanding how the voice is used in different styles of singing is commonly based on intuitive descriptions offered by performers who are proficient in only one style. Such descriptions are debatable, lack reproducibility, and lack scientifically derived explanations of the characteristics. We undertook acoustic and aerodynamic analyses of a female subject with professional experience in both operatic and Broadway styles of singing, who sang examples in these two styles. How representative the examples are of the respective styles was investigated by means of a listening test. Further, as a
