Contribution of Verbal Learning & Memory and Spectro-Temporal Discrimination to Speech Recognition in Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Existing cochlear implant (CI) outcomes research demonstrates a high degree of variability in device effectiveness among experienced CI users. Increasing evidence suggests that verbal learning and memory (VL&M) may have an influence on speech recognition with CIs. This study examined the relations in CI users between visual measures of VL&M and speech recognition in a series of models that also incorporated spectro-temporal discrimination. Predictions were that (1) speech recognition would be associated with VL&M abilities and (2) VL&M would contribute to speech recognition outcome

Consonant-vowel lateralization in dyslexic children: deficit or compensatory development?

Two studies with the same subjects examined dyslexic children's puzzling superiority in forced left ear (LE) dichotic recall with consonant-vowel (CV) combinations. Thirty dysphonemic dyslexics were compared to 30 age-matched and 30 younger reading-matched normal readers. The children were tested in directed attention dichotic listening and in pseudoword decoding, word recognition, reading comprehension, spelling, arithmetic, and general intelligence (IQ). Failure to replicate the LE effect in the first experiment or in free-recall trials suggests its probable origin in aberrant attention/arou

Normative data for the Maryland CNC Test.

BACKGROUND: The Maryland consonant-vowel nucleus-consonant (CNC) Test is routinely used in Veterans Administration medical centers, yet there is a paucity of published normative data for this test. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to provide information on the means and distribution of word-recognition scores on the Maryland CNC Test as a function of degree of hearing loss for a veteran population. RESEARCH DESIGN: A retrospective, descriptive design was conducted. STUDY SAMPLE: The sample consisted of records from veterans who had Compensation and Pension (C&P) examinations at a Vete

Auditory word identification in dyslexic and normally achieving readers.

The integrity of phonological representation/processing in dyslexic children was explored with a gating task in which children listened to successively longer segments (gates) of a word. At each gate, the task was to decide what the entire word was. Responses were scored for overall accuracy as well as the children's sensitivity to coarticulation from the final consonant. As a group, dyslexic children were less able than normally achieving readers to detect coarticulation present in the vowel portion of the word, particularly on the most difficult items, namely those ending in a nasal sound. Is there a relationship between speech and nonspeech auditory processing in children with dyslexia?

A group of 8 young teenagers with dyslexia were compared to age-matched control participants on a number of speech and nonspeech auditory tasks. There were no differences between the control participants and the teenagers with dyslexia in forward and simultaneous masking, nor were there any differences in frequency selectivity as indexed by performance with a bandstop noise. Thresholds for backward masking in a broadband noise were elevated for the teenagers with dyslexia as a group. If this deficit in backward masking had an influence on speech perception, we might expect the perception of "b

Adults' item and order errors on sequences of time-compressed rhyming words.

This investigation provided normative data for the intelligibility of time-compressed (TC) phonemes in 40 normal-hearing adults aged 18-26 yrs. Individual Ss were presented with 5-word rhyming sequences from the Fairbanks Rhyme Test (e.g., cat-bat-hat-mat-rat) sent to a monaural earphone at 40 db re SRT, and required to write the initial phonemes in the order as heard. Sequences were either at normal speed or at 60% TC, either unmasked or under contralateral multitalker masking at 65 db re SRT, counterbalanced for ear (R,L) and presentation order (R-L, L-R). Significant effects for both TC and

Auditive and cognitive factors in speech perception by elderly listeners.

A key issue in research on speech perception in the elderly is whether the difficulties in understanding speech are caused by auditive and/or cognitive factors. Resolving this issue is not only scientific interest but has many practical, i.e. diagnostic and rehabilitative, implications as well. We developed a test battery comprising auditive (sensitivity, frequency selectivity and temporal resolution), cognitive (memory performance, processing speed and intellectual abilities), and speech perception tests (at the phoneme, spondee and sentence level). This test battery was administered to 72 el

[The Freiburg speech intelligibility test : A pillar of speech audiometry in German-speaking countries].

The Freiburg speech intelligibility test according to DIN 45621 was introduced around 60 years ago. For decades, and still today, the Freiburg test has been a standard whose relevance extends far beyond pure audiometry. It is used primarily to determine the speech perception threshold (based on two-digit numbers) and the ability to discriminate speech at suprathreshold presentation levels (based on monosyllabic nouns). Moreover, it is a measure of the degree of disability, the requirement for and success of technical hearing aids (auxiliaries directives), and the compensation for disability an

Heidelberg Phoneme Discrimination Test (HLAD): normative data for children of the third grade and correlation with spelling ability.

OBJECTIVE: The Heidelberg Phoneme Discrimination Test (HLAD), developed and standardized in 1998, is widely used in the differential diagnosis of dyslexia. Normative data have only been available for children of the 2nd and 4th grades, while norms for the 3rd grade are still missing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We assessed three HLAD subtests [auditory phoneme discrimination, kinesthetic phoneme discrimination (repeating minimal pairs) and phoneme analysis] in 140 children of the 3rd grade from eight elementary schools. Writing capacity was tested via DRT3. RESULTS: Comparing children of the 2nd,

Impaired perception of harmonic complexity in congenital amusia: a case study.

This study investigates whether congenital amusia (an inability to perceive music from birth) also impairs the perception of musical qualities that do not rely on fine-grained pitch discrimination. We established that G.G. (64-year-old male, age-typical hearing) met the criteria of congenital amusia and demonstrated music-specific deficits (e.g., language processing, intonation, prosody, fine-grained pitch processing, pitch discrimination, identification of discrepant tones and direction of pitch for tones in a series, pitch discrimination within scale segments, predictability of tone sequence

Auditory functions in anaesthesia residents during exposure to operating room noise.

Twenty anaesthesia residents were exposed to a pre-recorded audio cassette of operating room noise. The noise level during exposure was maintained at 77.32 +/- 1 dB (A), which was the calculated average operating room noise in our institute. Two auditory functions i.e., speech reception threshold and speech discrimination were studied before and during exposure to noise in a pre-fixed order. The right and left ears were tested separately. Speech reception threshold showed a mean increase of 23.75 +/- 6.86 dB (A) for the right ear and 26.25 +/- 6.90 dB(A) for the left ear during exposure to noi

[Clinical comparison of a digital with an analog hearing aid].

The benefit of innovative hearing aid technology can be evaluated in clinical trials. The present study describes the comparison of a new digital hearing aid with an analogue device serving as a reference. The tests were carried out with 15 experienced hearing aid wearers. To prevent the influence of different fitting algorithms such as prescriptive or loudness-based the digital devices were not renewed fitted but their level- and frequency-depending gain was adjusted to that of the reference. Different tests concerning loudness perception (category loudness scaling) speech discrimination in n

Auditory Acuity and Response to Altered Auditory Feedback in Children with and without Rhotic Distortions.

Introduction Children with residual speech sound disorder (RSSD) exhibit speech production patterns that differ from their dialect community and persist beyond the typical developmental window. Differences in sensory acuity or sensory feedback response may contribute to these persisting deviations. Methods To assess this, the present study evaluated response to altered auditory feedback in 46 children aged 9-15 who represented two groups: children with RSSD (5 female, 15 male) and children without RSSD (13 female, 13 male). Participants heard their speech in near real-time with the first forma

Neurophysiological evidence for cortical discrimination impairment of prosody in Asperger syndrome.

Asperger syndrome (AS), belonging to the autism spectrum of disorders, is one of the pervasive developmental disorders. Individuals with AS usually have normal development of formal speech but pronounced problems in perceiving and producing speech prosody. The present study addressed the discrimination of speech prosody in AS by recording the mismatch negativity (MMN) and behavioural responses to natural utterances with different emotional connotations. MMN responses were abnormal in the adults with AS in several ways. In these subjects, fewer significantly elicited MMNs, diminished MMN amplit

Analysis of glottal source parameters in Parkinsonian speech.

Diagnosis and monitoring of Parkinson's disease has a number of challenges as there is no definitive biomarker despite the broad range of symptoms. Research is ongoing to produce objective measures that can either diagnose Parkinson's or act as an objective decision support tool. Recent research on speech based measures have demonstrated promising results. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of the glottal source signal in Parkinsonian speech. An experiment is conducted in which a selection of glottal parameters are tested for their ability to discriminate between healthy and Pa

The intelligibility of sentences in quiet and in noise in aged listeners.

The monaural speech-reception threshold (SRT) for sentences was investigated in quiet and under four noise conditions for 80 male subjects (age 60-90) and 30 female subjects (age 71-89). The noise levels used were 28, 43, 58, and 73 dBA. The noise had the long-term average spectrum of speech. It is shown that a model developed by Plomp [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 63, 533-549 (1978)], which interprets any hearing loss for speech (SHL) as a combination of a loss of class A (attenuation of both speech and noise) and a loss of class D (distortion of the sound signals), enables one to make an accurate des
