PURPOSE: Oral and speech motor abilities are key components of assessments of Cantonese speakers with speech sound disorder (SSD), especially childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). This study aims to investigate the oral and speech motor abilities of Cantonese preschool children with and without SSD using an adapted version of a popular English assessment protocol.
METHOD: A total of 104 Cantonese-speaking children, aged between 3 and 5 years, were assigned to three main groups: typical development (TD), non-CAS SSD, and CAS. They were tested using the Cantonese Oral and Speech Motor Assessment (

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a severe and rare form of speech sound disorder (SSD). CAS is typically sporadic, but may segregate in families with broader speech and language deficits. We hypothesize that genetic changes may be involved in the etiology of CAS. We conduct whole-genome sequencing in 27 families with CAS, 101 individuals in all. We identify 17 genomic regions including 19 unique copy number variants (CNVs). Three variants are shared across families, but the rest are unique; three events are de novo. In four families, siblings with milder phenotypes co-inherited the same CN

Currently, not all children that need speech therapy have access to a therapist. With the current international shortage of speech-language pathologists (SLPs), there is a demand for online tools to support SLPs with their daily tasks. Several online speech therapy (OST) systems have been designed and proposed in the literature; however, the implementation of these systems is lacking. The technical knowledge that is needed to use these programs is a challenge for SLPs. There has been limited effort to systematically identify, analyze and report the findings of prior studies. We provide the res

Purpose This study aims to give an insight in clinical reasoning (diagnosis and intervention) of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the Netherlands for children with speech sound disorder (SSD). Method The study featured a mixed-method (qualitative and quantitative) design. Semistructured interviews containing nondirective, open-ended questions were conducted with 33 SLPs, which were analyzed using a constant comparative analysis. Other SLPs (137) filled out a questionnaire on the same topics. Multiple-choice questions were analyzed by descriptive frequencies, while open-ended questions we

Speech sound distortion is considered to be a salient feature of neuromotor speech disorders such as cerebellar dysarthria and apraxia of speech. The aim of this study was to compare the temporal and spatial aspects of speech of two persons with acquired cerebellar dysarthria and of one person with acquired apraxia of speech. Voice onset time of [d], duration of articulatory closure of [d], duration of [s] and [l], formants of [l] and the range of acoustic energy of [s] were analysed spectrographically in a number of utterances with various sound structures. The results indicated that spatial

PURPOSE: to measure the effect of Brief Computerized Auditory Training (Brief-CAT) on behavioral auditory and speech skills in children with Speech Sound Disorder (SSD).
METHODS: 14 children, aged 6 and 9, diagnosed with SSD participated. All children presented one or more altered auditory skills in the behavioral assessment of Central Auditory Processing (CAP). They underwent six sessions of Brief-CAT. CAP's behavioral auditory skills and speech were assessed and a questionnaire was administered pre and post Brief-CAT. Inferential analysis was carried out.
RESULTS: Brief-CAT had an effect o

PURPOSE: The clinical diagnosis of motor speech disorders (MSDs) is mainly based on perceptual approaches. However, studies on perceptual classification of MSDs often indicate low classification accuracy. The aim of this study was to determine in a forced-choice dichotomous decision-making task (a) how accuracy of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in perceptually classifying apraxia of speech (AoS) and dysarthria is impacted by speech task, severity of MSD, and listener's expertise and (b) which perceptual features they use to classify.
METHOD: Speech samples from 29 neurotypical speakers,

Purpose The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate whether preschool- and early school-age children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) have difficulties with speech perception. Method Systematic searching of 8 electronic databases identified 73 eligible studies across 71 articles examining the speech perception skills of children with SSDs. The findings and methodological characteristics of each study were reviewed, and the reporting of methodological information in each article was rated. A meta-analysis was conducted with studies that used the m

A group of Finnish-speaking students (n = 451) was examined clinically to study occurrence of articulatory disorders in speech, controlling for the possible effects of age, sex, and previous speech therapy. Distortions of the /s/ sound were found in 16%, of the /r/ sound in 3%, and of the /l/, /n/, or /d/ sounds in about 1% of the subjects; the rarest faultily produced sounds were usually combined with other articulatory disorders. According to fitted log-linear functions, age and sex were not related to prevalence of articulatory disorders in speech among young adults, while there was a tende

PURPOSE: Perceptual learning paradigms involving written feedback appear to be a viable clinical tool to reduce the intelligibility burden of dysarthria. The underlying theoretical assumption is that pairing the degraded acoustics with the intended lexical targets facilitates a remapping of existing mental representations in the lexicon. This study investigated whether ties to mental representations can be strengthened by way of a somatosensory motor trace.
METHOD: Following an intelligibility pretest, 100 participants were assigned to 1 of 5 experimental groups. The control group received no

OBJECTIVE: In December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread around the world and caused massive restrictions in our daily life. Many educational facilities and practices delivering speech therapy were temporally closed (so-called lockdown). Children with a speech and language disorder were forced to pause their therapy. The aim of this study was to describe if and how speech therapy was delivered during lockdown and what psychological burden was associated to affected parents.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Parents of children with a speech and language disorder were asked about their child's t

PURPOSE: Children with speech sound disorder (SSD) and reading disability (RD) have poor phonological awareness, a problem believed to arise largely from deficits in processing the sensory information in speech, specifically individual acoustic cues. However, such cues are details of acoustic structure. Recent theories suggest that listeners also need to be able to integrate those details to perceive linguistically relevant form. This study examined abilities of children with SSD, RD, and SSD+RD not only to process acoustic cues but also to recover linguistically relevant form from the speech

BACKGROUND: It is thought that approximately 6% of children have speech and language difficulties of which the majority will not have any other significant developmental difficulties. Whilst most children's difficulties resolve, children whose difficulties persist into primary school may have long-term problems concerning literacy, socialisation, behaviour and school attainment.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the effectiveness of speech and language interventions for children with primary speech and language delay/disorder.
SEARCH STRATEGY: The following databases were searched: The Cochrane Control
