Effects of synthetic speech output in the learning of graphic symbols of varied iconicity.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of additional auditory feedback from synthetic speech on the learning of high translucent symbols versus low translucent symbols. METHOD: Two adults with little or no functional speech and severe intellectual disabilities served as participants. A single-subject ABACA/ACABA design was used to study the relative effects of two treatments: symbol training in the presence and absence of synthetic speech output. RESULTS: The results clearly indicated that the two treatments, rather than extraneous variables were responsible for gains in the symbol learning. Both p

Automated telephone communication systems for preventive healthcare and management of long-term conditions.

BACKGROUND: Automated telephone communication systems (ATCS) can deliver voice messages and collect health-related information from patients using either their telephone's touch-tone keypad or voice recognition software. ATCS can supplement or replace telephone contact between health professionals and patients. There are four different types of ATCS: unidirectional (one-way, non-interactive voice communication), interactive voice response (IVR) systems, ATCS with additional functions such as access to an expert to request advice (ATCS Plus) and multimodal ATCS, where the calls are delivered as

Design and evaluation of nonverbal sound-based input for those with motor handicapped.

Most personal computing interfaces rely on the users' ability to use their hand and arm movements to interact with on-screen graphical widgets via mainstream devices, including keyboards and mice. Without proper assistive devices, this style of input poses difficulties for motor-handicapped users. We propose a sound-based input scheme enabling users to operate Windows' Graphical User Interface by producing hums and fricatives through regular microphones. Hierarchically arranged menus are utilized so that only minimal numbers of different actions are required at a time. The proposed scheme was

Feasibility and effectiveness of a digital voice assistant for improving anti-osteoporosis medication adherence, and osteoporosis knowledge and attitudes, in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis: A 12-month randomised controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: Digital voice assistants (DVAs) are feasible for delivering a digital health intervention designed to improve osteoporosis self-management in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. However, the DVA intervention did not improve anti-osteoporosis drug adherence, nor did it enhance osteoporosis knowledge or attitudes in this population. PURPOSE: To determine feasibility and effectiveness of a digital voice assistant (DVA) intervention for improving anti-osteoporosis medication adherence, and osteoporosis knowledge and attitudes, in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. METHODS: T

Automated Question-and-Answer-Based Speech-In-Noise Hearing Test Using a Large Language Model.

A conversational speech-in-noise test administered without human supervision is desirable to reduce the need to attend the clinic. This study aimed to create and evaluate a novel question-and-answer-based speech-in-noise test called 'CHAT', where stimuli were synthesised using text-to-speech (TTS), responses captured using automatic speech recognition (ASR), and responses evaluated using a large language model (LLM). Three tests were compared: the newly developed CHAT, the Adaptive Sentence List (ASL) and the Four Alternative Auditory Feature Test (FAAF). CHAT used synthetic speech while ASL a

[Speech intelligibility degree and coping after multimodal therapy of oral squamous carcinoma].

BACKGROUND: Multimodal treatment of oral cancer can cause speech disorders and diminish speech intelligibility. Speech intelligibility is an essential part of social interaction and therefore important for coping with the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of speech intelligibility on coping strategies and a standardized questionnaire. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Speech recordings from 76 patients 60.7 ± 11.4 years old (19 women, 57 men) were performed at least 6 months after multimodal treatment of T1-T4 squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and evaluated by autom

eXCube2: Explainable Brain-Inspired Spiking Neural Network Framework for Emotion Recognition from Audio, Visual and Multimodal Audio-Visual Data.

This paper introduces a biomimetic framework and novel brain-inspired AI (BIAI) models based on spiking neural networks (SNNs) for emotional state recognition from audio (speech), visual (face), and integrated multimodal audio-visual data. The developed framework, named eXCube2, uses a three-dimensional SNN architecture NeuCube that is spatially structured according to a human brain template. The BIAI models developed in eXCube2 are trainable on spatio- and spectro-temporal data using brain-inspired learning rules. Such models are explainable in terms of revealing patterns in data and are adap

User evaluation of a communication system that automatically generates captions to improve telephone communication.

This study examined the subjective benefit obtained from automatically generated captions during telephone-speech comprehension in the presence of babble noise. Short stories were presented by telephone either with or without captions that were generated offline by an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system. To simulate online ASR, the word accuracy (WA) level of the captions was 60% or 70% and the text was presented delayed to the speech. After each test, the hearing impaired participants (n = 20) completed the NASA-Task Load Index and several rating scales evaluating the support from the c

The Intelligibility-Based Repeat-Recall Test: I. Bayesian-Guided Estimation of Multiple Speech Reception Thresholds.

OBJECTIVES: The intelligibility-based Repeat-Recall Test (i-RRT) seeks to compare secondary speech-in-noise (SiN) test outcomes, such as listening effort, against normative references measured at equal levels of SiN intelligibility. The present study evaluates the reliability, sensitivity, and accuracy of the easy speech reception threshold ("ezSRT") test, the first part of the i-RRT, a Bayesian-guided adaptive SiN test for quickly estimating a listeners' complete performance-intensity functions and deriving estimated SRTs. DESIGN: Single-blind mixed design. Twenty normal hearing and 19 heari

Cochlear implantation in unilateral hearing loss: impact of short- to medium-term auditory deprivation.

INTRODUCTION: Single sided deafness (SSD) results in profound cortical reorganization that presents clinically with a significant impact on sound localization and speech comprehension. Cochlear implantation (CI) has been approved for two manufacturers' devices in the United States to restore bilateral function in SSD patients with up to 10 years of auditory deprivation. However, there is great variability in auditory performance and it remains unclear how auditory deprivation affects CI benefits within this 10-year window. This prospective study explores how measured auditory performance relat

Does probe-tube verification of real-ear hearing aid amplification characteristics improve outcomes in adult hearing aid users? A protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Using a probe-tube microphone to measure and adjust the real-ear performance of the hearing aid to match the prescription target is recommended and widely used in clinical practice. Hearing aid fitting software can approximately match the amplification characteristics of the hearing aid to the prescription without real-ear measurements (REMs), but using REM improves the match to the prescribed target. What is unclear is if the improved match results in a better patient-reported outcome. The primary objective of this review is to determine whether the use of REM improves patient-r
