Subcutaneous spirocercosis in a dog from Costa Rica and first molecular confirmation of Spirocerca lupi in Central America.

Spirocerca lupi is the etiological agent of spirocercosis in canids from tropics and subtropics in the world. This parasite can lead to life threatening complications, including the formation of fibro and osteosarcomas. A 5-year-old crossbreed Maltese dog from Costa Rica was presented to a veterinary clinic with two nodules in the subcutaneous tissues of the cervical region. One of the nodules resolved with intramuscular antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment. However, the other nodule persisted and became purulent. The content of the nodule was excised releasing two coiled 3-cm reddish wo

Laboratory breeding of two Phortica species (Diptera: Drosophilidae), vectors of the zoonotic eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda.

BACKGROUND: Some species of drosophilid flies belonging to the genus Phortica feed on ocular secretions of mammals, acting as biological vectors of the zoonotic eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda. This study describes an effective breeding protocol of Phortica variegata and Phortica oldenbergi in insectary conditions. METHODS: Alive gravid flies of P. oldenbergi, P. variegata and Phortica semivirgo were field collected in wooded areas of Lazio region (Italy) and allowed to oviposit singularly to obtain isofamilies. Flies were maintained in ovipots (200 ml) with a plaster-covered bottom to maintain h

Case report: intraocular gnathostomiasis in Vietnam.

This is the report of the first case of intraocular gnathostomiasis diagnosed in Vietnam. The disease progressed in two months in two distinct phases: in the first phase, the patient had swellings, which appeared at different times and in different locations, on his face--this phase lasted around one month; the second phase was the embedding of the parasite in the vitreous cavity of the right eye and uveitis. Surgical extraction of a living Gnathostoma larva was carried out. Based on morphological, histological criteria, the larva may have been an atypical third-stage of Gnathostoma spinigerum

Parasites of the stomach in donkeys of the highveld of Zimbabwe.

Fourteen donkeys from a communal area of the Zimbabwean highveld were examined for stomach parasites during July and November of 1986 and January and April of 1987. All 14 animals were infected. Habronema muscae occurred in 12, Draschia megastoma in 11, H. majus in 9, Trichostrongylus axei in 9, Gasterophilus intestinalis in 14 and G. nasalis in 1 donkey. The lowest level of infection was in January for the helminths and in April for Gasterophilus larvae. The peak burdens of parasites were in July for Habronema spp. and in November for D. megastoma and Gasterophilus larvae. Infections with spi

Thelazia callipaeda (Spirurida, Thelaziidae): First record of an imported ocular parasite in dogs from the Canary Islands, Spain.

The ocular parasite Thelazia callipaeda is a nematode transmitted by dipterans of the genus Phortica that affects various species of domestic and wild carnivores and, sporadically, humans. Although the presence of this parasite has been widely documented on the Iberian Peninsula, no cases have been reported in the Canary Islands (Spain). In the present study, ocular parasitosis in dogs from Tenerife and Gran Canaria are reported. The affected animals, a nine-year-old Border Collie, a five-year-old Labrador Retriever and a three-year-old crossbreed dog, presented clinical signs compatible with

Transmission of the eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda: between fantasy and reality.

BACKGROUND: Thelazia callipaeda is transmitted by Phortica variegata, a drosophilid that feeds on lachrymal secretions of mammals. Scientific information on human thelaziosis is still relatively limited, mainly for physicians and ophthalmologists. Indeed, the literature is full of misleading information on the transmission of T. callipaeda to humans. FINDINGS: A recent paper reported a case of human intraocular infestation in a patient from Karnataka. The information presented in that article as well as in other articles in the international literature is outdated and incorrect in several ins

Pila ampullacea and Pomacea canaliculata, as new paratenic hosts of Gnathostoma spinigerum.

Aquatic snails, Pila ampullacea and Pomacea canaliculata were experimentally found to be suitable paratenic hosts for advanced third-stage larvae (L3) of the nematode Gnathostoma spinigerum, the causative parasite of gnathostomiasis in humans. G. spinigerum (L3) were found to be encapsulated in the tissue of the snail's foot and its internal organs. The infection, intensity and survival of third-stage larvae of G. spinigerum in both species of aquatic snails are described. This is the first evidence to reveal that not only vertebrates but also invertebrates (snails) can serve as paratenic host

Human thelaziosis--a neglected parasitic disease of the eye.

The oriental eyeworm, Thelazia callipaeda (Spirurida, Thelaziidae), infects a range of definitive hosts, such as dogs, cats, foxes, rabbits, and humans. This parasite usually lives under the nictitating membrane of the eye, where the adult females release first-stage larvae into the lachrymal secretions; these larvae are subsequently ingested by the intermediate arthropod host within which they develop to the infective, third-stage larvae. The latter larvae are then deposited into the eyes of the definitive host. Recently, T. callipaeda has been reported to infect dogs, foxes, and/or cats in E

Contrasting shifts in potential climatic suitability of two Thelazia callipaeda vectors (Phortica okadai and Phortica variegata) across China and Europe under climate change.

BACKGROUND: Phortica okadai and Phortica variegata are the primary vectors of the zoonotic eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda, which infects humans and various mammals. Climate change and intensified human activities have altered the potential suitable habitats of these vectors, posing a risk of expanded T. callipaeda transmission. This study aims to predict the current potential suitable habitats and future distribution patterns of the two species, providing a scientific basis for vector-borne disease prevention and control. METHODS: Species occurrence records were compiled from the Global Biodiver

First Report of Philometroides sanguineus (Nematoda: Philometridae) in Farmed Goldfish (Carassius auratus) in Italy.

The ornamental fish trade has facilitated the global dissemination of parasites, posing significant biosecurity risks. This study documents the first detection of the nematode Philometroides sanguineus in farmed goldfish (Carassius auratus) in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Specimens of gravid females, found in the caudal fins, and males, collected from the swim bladder, were identified through morphological, molecular and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses. This report underscores the risk of nonnative pathogen introduction via ornamental fish translocation, and the possibility of their spre

Morphological and molecular analysis of Spinitectus notopteri (Nematoda: Cystidicolidae) from freshwater fish in Thailand.

The nematode Spinitectus notopteri Karve et Naik, 1951 was collected from two species of freshwater fish belonging to the family Notopteridae, namely Chitala ornata (Gray) and Notopterus notopterus (Pallas), at Khun Thale Swamp in Surat Thani province of southern Thailand. The overall prevalence of the parasite was found to be 88% (94 fish infected/106 fish examined). A higher prevalence was found in C. ornata (96%), while a higher intensity was noted for N. notopterus (117 parasites/fish). The most important morphological characters were the presence of cephalic and cuticular structures, prec

Acute mesenteric ischemia-like syndrome associated with suspected Spirocerca lupi aberrant migration in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To describe acute mesenteric infarction due to suspected Spirocerca lupi aberrant migration in 5 dogs. CASE SERIES SUMMARY: All dogs were large breed, none of which exhibited typical clinical signs associated with spirocercosis. All dogs were eventually diagnosed with septic peritonitis. On exploratory laparotomy, thickening of the jejunal arteries, surrounding mesojejunum, and segmental necrosis were identified. Similar thickening and hematoma formation were found in other regions of the mesentery. In 4 of the cases, the necrotic segment was located in the distal jejunum. Histolog

Gnathostomiasis possibly caused by Gnathostoma malaysiae.

Gnathostomiasis is rarely reported in travelers, although the disease remains a major public health problem in Southeast Asia. A creeping eruption and Quincke's edema (slowly migrating erythema with pruritus) appeared in two Japanese men who had eaten raw freshwater shrimp in Myanmar. A Gnathostoma larva was found in subcutaneous tissue from one of the men. Four species causing human gnathostomiasis, G. hispidum, G. doloresi, G. nipponicum and G. spinigerum, can be distinguished based on the number of nuclei in intestinal epithelial cells of infected larvae, in cross-section. In G. hispidum, o
