Intimate partner violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a common problem affecting many women who present to obstetrics and gynecology practices. It takes on many forms, including psychologic/emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, and its effects on the health of victims and their children vary. Although many women's health care professionals may be uncomfortable inquiring about IPV, a knowledge of patients' IPV victimization may help physicians develop a better understanding of patients' presenting symptoms and health risks, form more effective therapeutic relationships, and work toward reducing the myriad health

Exposure to alcohol problems and its association with sexual behaviour and biologically confirmed Trichomonas vaginalis among women living with HIV.

OBJECTIVES: Only a small number of studies have examined the association between alcohol use and risky sexual behaviour among women living with HIV, particularly African-American women. The present study examined the association between alcohol problems, sexual behaviour and biologically confirmed sexually transmitted infections (STI) among a sample of predominantly African-American women living with HIV. METHODS: A sample of 366 women living with HIV between the ages of 18 and 50 years participated in the study. The majority of women were African-American (84.2%). Participants completed a fa

A Validated Screening Instrument for Identifying Intimate Partner Violence in South Asian Immigrant Women.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) for South Asian immigrants is prevalent and has many unique sociodemographic and cultural factors associated with it. Current screening instruments do not address the unique cultural factors associated with IPV in this population. The South Asian Violence Screen (SAVS) is a 14-item screening tool for IPV designed based on the specific demographic and cultural issues affecting South Asian immigrant women in the United States. The tool was validated using the Index of Spouse Abuse (ISA), a well-established survey instrument for detecting IPV. The participants in t

Factors associated with domestic violence in south-east Nigeria.

A cross-sectional survey was carried out at two tertiary health institutions in south-east Nigeria from 1 January 2005 to 31 March 2005 to determine the factors associated with domestic violence (DV). The study group comprised of 600 consecutive men seen at the General Outpatient department of the two hospitals during the study period. More than two-thirds (70%) of respondents reported abuse in their family, with 92% (n=385) of the victims being female partners and the remaining 8% (n=35) male. DV was significantly associated with lower social class, alcohol consumption, increasing age dispari

Family of origin violence and MCMI-II psychopathology among partner assaultive men.

This study examined associations between family of origin violence, self-reports of psychopathology on the MCMI-II, and current spouse abuse among partner assaultive men. Compared to nonviolent men in discordant (n = 24) and well-adjusted (n = 24) relationships, partner assaultive men (n = 24) were significantly more likely to report childhood histories of physical abuse and physical abuse of the mother in the family of origin. The partner assaultive men also reported significantly higher scores on a variety of MCMI-II personality disorder and Axis I disorder scales. When negative affectivity

Child emotional maltreatment: a 2-year study of US Army cases.

OBJECTIVE: Reports of childhood emotional maltreatment have increased greatly over the past decade. The objective of this research was to determine the types of emotional maltreatment substantiated in a community of US Army families residing temporarily in Germany. Such a description may help to improve the understanding of how a jurisdictional body defines emotional maltreatment in day-to-day practice. METHOD: Data were obtained from a review of the minutes of case review committees (CRCs) for 181 cases of child emotional abuse in 1997-1998. We determined the type, number, and severity of in

Lethal domestic violence in eastern North Carolina.

Strategies for preventing domestic violence can be tailored to a particular geographic or socioeconomic area if the patterns of domestic violence in the area are known. National statistics, although widely available, may not be applicable to a specific region. We reviewed homicide deaths in Eastern North Carolina between 1978 and 1999 to identify patterns in this rural area. Approximately 20% of the homicide deaths in eastern North Carolina are caused by intimate partners. Women accounted for 53% of the victims in 1976, similar to national figures but not rising to 72% as seen nationally in 19

Culture and domestic violence amongst ever-married women in Malawi: an analysis of emotional, sexual, less-severe physical and severe physical violence.

Nearly 42% of ever-married women in Malawi have experienced some form of physical, sexual or emotional violence perpetrated by their current or most recent spouse - higher than the global estimate of 35%. This study used national-level data for ever-married women aged 15-49 years from the 2015 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey to explore the association between cultural factors and the likelihood of women experiencing sexual, physical and emotional violence after controlling for socioeconomic factors using multilevel logistic regression modelling. Key cultural factors found to be associated

Correlates of attitudes toward wife beating among married/partnered individuals in Lao PDR: results from the 2023 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey.

BACKGROUND: The pervasiveness of wife-beating attitudes (WBA) acceptance is alarming and significantly influences intimate partner violence (IPV). Understanding correlates of this acceptance is important for designing targeted interventions and policies to reduce IPV. METHODS: Using de-identified data from the Lao PDR Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2023, a secondary analysis of WBA and their correlates in currently married/partnered men and women aged 15-49 years was conducted, with separate analyses performed for each sex. The correlates analyzed were age, educational attainment, residenc

Contextual Factors Associated with Abuse of Home-Dwelling Persons with Dementia: A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study of Informal Caregivers.

One in six community-dwelling older adults experience elder abuse yearly, and persons with dementia are especially at risk. Although many risk factors for elder abuse have been identified, there are still knowledge gaps concerning risk and protective factors. This cross-sectional survey among Norwegian informal caregivers (ICGs) aimed to find individual, relational, and community factors associated with psychological and physical abuse of home-dwelling persons with dementia. This study involved 540 ICGs and was conducted from May to December 2021. Statistical analysis using penalized logistic

Differences in stressful life events between men and women experiencing homelessness.

People experiencing homelessness are particularly vulnerable to experiencing stressful life events (SLEs) at some point in their lives; these SLEs are crucial for understanding the etiology and maintenance of homelessness. This study analyses the differences between men and women experiencing homelessness in the suffering of SLEs throughout their lives (childhood, adolescence, and adulthood). The sample consisted of a group of 293 people experiencing homelessness in Madrid (Spain): 156 men and 137 women. The results suggest that the number and type of SLEs experienced by men and women are diff

Abusive episodes among home-dwelling persons with dementia and their informal caregivers: a cross-sectional Norwegian study.

BACKGROUND: Elder abuse is a serious issue with a global prevalence of 15.7% in the community setting. Persons with dementia are at higher risk of elder abuse than the older population in general. With a high and increasing prevalence of dementia this issue cannot be neglected. Hence, the aims of this study were 1) to describe the proportion of abusive episodes among home-dwelling persons with dementia and their informal caregivers, and 2) to explore differences between informal caregivers who have reported committing and not committing abusive acts. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was cond

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms among low-income, African American women with a history of intimate partner violence and suicidal behaviors: self-esteem, social support, and religious coping.

There is a dearth of research on risk/protective factors for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among low-income African American women with a history of intimate partner violence (IPV), presenting for suicidal behavior or routine medical care in a large, urban hospital. We examined self-esteem, social support, and religious coping as mediators between experiences of child maltreatment (CM) and IPV and symptoms of PTSD in a sample (N = 134) of low-income African American women. Instruments used included the Index of Spouse Abuse, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Taylor Self-Esteem Inv

Relationship Quality Trajectories and Financial Abuse Among Older Adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Financial abuse is a prevalent yet underreported form of elder abuse with serious health and economic consequences. Prior research has linked poor relationship quality to financial abuse risk, but most studies rely on cross-sectional designs and focus on a single relationship type. This study examined whether 10-year changes in relationship quality with spouses, family, and friends are associated with subsequent financial abuse. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Guided by social exchange theory, this study used data from three waves of the National Social Life, Health, a

Risk of Psychiatric Disorders Among Spouses of Patients With Cancer in Denmark and Sweden.

IMPORTANCE: There is emerging evidence that spouses of patients with cancer may have a higher prevalence of mental illness, but these studies have been limited by pre-post designs, focus on a single mental illness, and short follow-up periods. OBJECTIVES: To assess the overall burden of psychiatric disorders among spouses of patients with cancer vs spouses of individuals without cancer and to describe possible changes in this burden over time. Childhood maltreatment, emotion regulation strategies and depressive symptoms during spousal bereavement.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment increases the risk of depression, especially after experiencing a stressful life event, such as bereavement. Employing emotion regulation strategies can mitigate the impact childhood maltreatment has on depression later in life following the loss of a spouse. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated how cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression moderated the impact of childhood maltreatment and depressive symptoms following spousal bereavement. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We examined 130 bereaved individuals 3 months after the death of a spouse, 4 months after the deat
