Spray drying from complex solvent systems broadens the applicability of Kollicoat IR as a carrier in the formulation of solid dispersions.

The presented study aims to explore the feasibility of preparing solid dispersions of the poorly soluble drug, itraconazole, with Kollicoat IR via spray drying, in order to broaden the application window of the polymer. In order to circumvent the need for a common solvent, Kollicoat IR was dissolved in a 50/50 (v/v) water/ethanol mixture and itraconazole was dissolved in a 50/50 (v/v) dichloromethane/ethanol mixture. In a first approach these two solutions were simultaneously spray dried via a spray nozzle with two inlets. In a second approach the two solutions were mixed prior to spray drying

Internal microstructure of spray dried particles affects viral vector activity in dry vaccines.

To maintain the activity of sensitive biologics during encapsulation by spray drying, a better understanding of deactivation pathways in dried particles is necessary. The effect of solid-air interfaces within dried particles on viral deactivation was examined with three binary excipient blends, mannitol/dextran (MD), xylitol/dextran (XD), and lactose/trehalose (LT). Particles encapsulating human serotype 5 adenovirus viral vector (AdHu5) were produced via both spray drying and acoustic levitation. The particles' internal microstructure was directly visualized, and the location of a viral vecto

Dermal exposure to dry powder spray paints using PXRF and the method of Dirichlet tesselations.

This paper describes workplace dermal exposure measurements that were carried out by the Health and Safety Laboratory as part of the EU RISKOFDERM project to measure dust contamination. Exposure to dry powder spray paints was measured at five sites on 12 subjects. Twenty-two samples were obtained, of which eight contained triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) and 14 did not. All subjects wore Tyvek whole body oversuits and some wore sampling gloves. These were either analysed in their entirety to extract the TGIC or surface scanned over representative areas using a portable X-ray fluorescence spectr

Double-Flame Spray Pyrolysis Synthesized Stabilized Cobalt Nanoparticles for Dry Reforming of Methane.

The CO2 dry reforming of methane (DRM) to produce hydrogen-rich syngas offers a promising solution transforming two major greenhouse gases into a high-value product. DRM has the potential for commercial application, but the limited stability of catalysts poses a significant barrier to its widespread application. Flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) has emerged as an innovative technique for designing catalysts with distinct structures that enhance both activity and durability. In this study, double-flame spray pyrolysis (DF-FSP) has been utilized to design cobalt-based nanoparticles on an alumina suppo

Fabrication of large pore mesoporous silica microspheres by salt-assisted spray-drying method for enhanced antibacterial activity and pancreatic cancer treatment.

Large-pore mesoporous silica (LPMS) microspheres with tunable pore size have received intensive interest in the field of drug delivery due to their high storage capacity and fast delivery rate of drugs. In this work, a facile salt-assisted spray-drying method has been developed to fabricate LPMS microspheres using continuous spray-drying of simple inorganic salts as pore templates and colloidal SiO2 nanoparticles as building blocks, followed by washing with water to remove the templates. More importantly, the porosity of the LPMS microspheres can be finely tuned by adjusting the furnace temper

Development of Ternary Amorphous Solid Dispersions Manufactured by Hot-Melt Extrusion and Spray-Drying─Comparison of In Vitro and In Vivo Performance.

Producing amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) by hot-melt extrusion (HME) is favorable from an economic and ecological perspective but also limited to thermostable active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). A potential technology shift from spray-drying to hot-melt extrusion at later stages of drug product development is a desirable goal, however bearing the risk of insufficient comparability of the in vitro and in vivo performance of the final dosage form. Hot-melt extrusion was performed using API/polymer/surfactant mixtures with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose acetate succinate (HPMCAS) as the

Nano-in-Micro-Particles Consisting of PLGA Nanoparticles Embedded in Chitosan Microparticles via Spray-Drying Enhances Their Uptake in the Olfactory Mucosa.

Intranasal delivery has gained prominence since 1990, when the olfactory mucosa was recognized as the window to the brain and the central nervous system (CNS); this has enabled the direct site specific targeting of neurological diseases for the first time. Intranasal delivery is a promising route because general limitations, such as the blood-brain barrier (BBB) are circumvented. In the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) or Alzheimer's disease, for example, future treatment prospects include specialized particles as delivery vehicles. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles are we

Acid-base interactions in amorphous solid dispersions of lumefantrine prepared by spray-drying and hot-melt extrusion using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

This study investigates drug-excipient interactions in amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) of the model basic compound lumefantrine (LMN), with five acidic polymers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to measure the extent of the protonation of the tertiary amine in LMN by the five acidic polymers. The extent/efficiency of protonation of the ASDs was assessed a function of polymer type, manufacturing process (hot-melt extrusion vs. spray drying), and drug loading (DL). The most strongly acidic polymer, polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) was found to be the most efficient polymer in p

Comparative study on Al-SBA-15 prepared by spray drying and traditional methods for bulky hydrocarbon cracking: Properties, performance and influencing factors.

Mesoporous aluminosilicates Al-SBA-15 with large pore sizes and suitable acid properties are promising substitutes to zeolites for catalytic cracking of bulky hydrocarbons without molecular diffusion limitation. The conventional processes to synthesize Al-SBA-15 are time-consuming and often suffer from low "framework" Al contents. Herein, Al-SBA-15 microspheres are synthesized using the rapid and scalable microfluidic jet spray drying technique. They possess uniform particle sizes (45-60 μm), variable surface morphologies, high surface areas (264-340 m2/g), uniform mesopores (3.8-4.9 nm) and r

Stability of Trans-Resveratrol Encapsulated in a Protein Matrix Produced Using Spray Drying to UV Light Stress and Simulated Gastro-Intestinal Digestion.

Trans-resveratrol has demonstrated the potential to provide both therapeutic and preventive activities against chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer. The incorporation of trans-resveratrol into food products would allow for broader access of this bioactive compound to a larger population. However, this strategy is limited by instability of trans-resveratrol under environmental conditions and within the digestive system leading to isomerization of trans-resveratrol (bioactive form) to cis-resveratrol (bio-inactive form). Studies in the stabilization of trans-resveratrol into protein
