International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand: effects of dietary antioxidants on exercise and sports performance.

Following a comprehensive review, the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) has developed an official position on the role of dietary antioxidants in exercise and sport. Antioxidants play a complex, context-dependent role in vivo; they can facilitate recovery from exercise but may also hinder training adaptations when consumed at supraphysiological doses. While endogenous antioxidant systems can effectively maintain redox balance, dietary sources, particularly whole foods, can help mitigate excessive oxidative stress following intense/heavy training or inadequate recovery. The influ

The sagittal sways of back lordosis and sacral orientation during still standing at different arm positions.

Lumbo-pelvic parameters in the sagittal plane are normally measured from lateral radiographs obtained at a single time point during upright standing with arms held forward to expose anatomical bony structures. However, the human trunk naturally sways during still standing, which potentially alters the targeted parameters. We therefore aimed to investigate the effect of postural sway on lumbo-pelvic parameters during still standing at different arm positions. A non-radiological back measurement device was used to determine the absolute changes of back lordosis and sacral orientation during one-

The Effect of Standing and Different Sitting Positions on Lumbar Lordosis: Radiographic Study of 30 Healthy Volunteers.

STUDY DESIGN: Radiographic review of healthy volunteers. PURPOSE: To determine the ideal sitting positions by measuring changes in lumbar lordosis (LL) and pelvic parameters (PPs) in various positions. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Prolonged sitting is generally accepted as an important risk factor for low back pain (LBP). It is now recognized that spinopelvic alignment is important for maintaining an energy-efficient posture. METHODS: Lateral spine radiographs of thrirty healthy volunteers (male participants) were taken in standing and five sitting positions. Radiographic measurement of LL and P

American College of Sports Medicine position stand. Heat and cold illnesses during distance running.

Many recreational and elite runners participate in distance races each year. When these events are conducted in hot or cold conditions, the risk of environmental illness increases. However, exertional hyperthermia, hypothermia, dehydration, and other related problems may be minimized with pre-event education and preparation. This position stand provides recommendations for the medical director and other race officials in the following areas: scheduling; organizing personnel, facilities, supplies, equipment, and communication; providing competitor education; measuring environmental stress; prov

Variation in lumbar regional kyphosis between supine and standing positions. Implications for spinal fracture management.

PURPOSE: The variation of lumbar lordosis between standing and supine position is poorly explored in literature. This study sought to analyze variation of lumbar regional angulations (RA) in healthy volunteers between standing and supine positions, according to pelvic incidence (PI). METHODS: This study included 171 patients who had an abdominal CT-scan in supine position and 879 healthy volunteers with full-body stereoradiographs. The two populations were matched using a propensity score including age, PI, and sex. PI and RAs for all vertebrae from T12 to L5 (measured between the overlying v

How Does Radiographic Acetabular Morphology Change Between the Supine and Standing Positions in Asymptomatic Volunteers?

BACKGROUND: The radiographic appearance of the acetabulum differs between the supine and standing positions in patients with hip conditions. The pelvis undergoes a change in tilt when transitioning between positions, resulting in variations in version and acetabular coverage. However, the extent of these variations in well-functioning volunteers without compensatory patterns caused by pain is unknown. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We performed this study to (1) quantify differences in radiographic acetabular measurements when transitioning between supine and standing among asymptomatic, well-functionin

Pulse oxygen saturation measured in standing and squatting positions may be useful in evaluating tetralogy of Fallot.

BACKGROUND: Left-ventricular end-diastolic volume index (LVEDVI) and Nakata index, which in most cases are evaluated by echocardiography and cardiac catheterization, are 2 important predictors for the prognosis of surgical correction of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Nonetheless, performing these procedures on TOF patients is not always feasible. We therefore investigated whether the difference in transcutaneous pulse oxygen saturation between the standing position and squatting position (DeltaSPO2) reflected the LVEDVI and Nakata index, allowing DeltaSPO2 to be used as a supplement to echocardiog

Functional anatomy of trunk flexion-extension in isokinetic exercise: muscle activity in standing and seated positions.

AIM: This study examined the functional differences existing in the trunk flexion-extension movement in standing and seated positions during isokinetic exercises, as well as the influence of position on overload of the lumbar column. METHODS: Nine females underwent an isokinetic test at 60 and 180 degrees /s in standing and seated positions. Muscle electrical activity was assessed by means of surface electromyography (EMG). Motion angles related to the different body segments were extrapolated from video images. RESULTS: The range of motion for hip movements was statistically significantly h

American College of Sports Medicine position stand. Exertional heat illness during training and competition.

Exertional heat illness can affect athletes during high-intensity or long-duration exercise and result in withdrawal from activity or collapse during or soon after activity. These maladies include exercise associated muscle cramping, heat exhaustion, or exertional heatstroke. While certain individuals are more prone to collapse from exhaustion in the heat (i.e., not acclimatized, using certain medications, dehydrated, or recently ill), exertional heatstroke (EHS) can affect seemingly healthy athletes even when the environment is relatively cool. EHS is defined as a rectal temperature greater t

The efficacy of mechanical spinal manipulation in the standing position in patients with non-specific low back pain: a randomised placebo-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) is not attributable to a known cause and is a leading contributor to the global disease burden. The effect of specific spinal manipulation in patients with NSLBP using the vertical adjustment position standing (VAPS) technique described by Hartman remains unclear. This technique is used to address spinal restrictions and improve mobility. The main aim of the study was to examine the immediate and medium-term effects of VAPS on pain (VAS), mobility of the lumbar spine (MSt), and pain-related disability (ODI) in patients with non-specific low back

Moving from stable standing to single-limb stance or an up-on-the-toes position: The importance of vision to dynamic balance control.

Understanding the contribution vision has to dynamic balance control may help in understanding where/why loss of balance occurs during everyday locomotion. The current study determined how body-centre-of-mass (BCoM) dynamics and postural stability when moving to and holding a single-limb-stance (SS) or an up-on-the-toes (UTT) position were affected by visual occlusion. From standing on a force platform, 18 adults (mean (SD) 26.7 (4.8) years; 1.73 (0.08) m; 84.0 (22.9) kg; 7 females) completed repeated trials (x3) with and without vision in which they moved to either a SS or an UTT position (or

Surface electromyography studies in standing position confirm that ankle strategy remains disturbed even following successful treatment of patients with a history of sciatica.

[Purpose] It is hypothesized that ankle strategy can be changed in patients with a history of sciatica. The aim of this study was to detect residual disturbances following successful treatment. [Subjects and Methods] In patients with a history of sciatica (N=11) and pseudo-sciatica (N=9), differences in muscle activity were recorded with bilateral surface polyelectromyography and stability measurements (center of foot pressure sway and center of spectrum) in normal standing and tandem positions. Results were compared with recordings in healthy people (N=9) to identify abnormalities in electrom

Reproductive features and use of an anti-inflammatory drug in estrus-induced dairy goats artificially inseminated in a standing position with cervix immobilization.

This study evaluated reproductive features and role of Flunixin-Meglumine at timed artificial insemination (AI), using a new technique of standing position with cervix immobilization. In Experiment 1, 10 goats (n=5 nulliparous [Null] and 5 pluriparous [Plu]) were evaluated after estrus induction by recorded reproductive parameters to define the ideal time for AI. In Experiment 2, goats were artificially inseminated 51-54h after sponge removal with frozen-thawed semen. At AI, 1mL saline (CONTROL; 18 Null and 14 Plu) or 50mg Flunixin-Meglumine (FLUNIXIN; 15 Null and 18 Plu) was administered i.m.

Self-motion perception and vestibulo-ocular reflex during whole body yaw rotation in standing subjects: the role of head position and neck proprioception.

Self-motion perception and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were studied during whole body yaw rotation in the dark at different static head positions. Rotations consisted of four cycles of symmetric sinusoidal and asymmetric oscillations. Self-motion perception was evaluated by measuring the ability of subjects to manually track a static remembered target. VOR was recorded separately and the slow phase eye position (SPEP) was computed. Three different head static yaw deviations (active and passive) relative to the trunk (0°, 45° to right and 45° to left) were examined. Active head deviations had

Changes in lumbar spondylolisthesis on axial-loaded MRI: do they reproduce the positional changes in the degree of olisthesis observed on X-ray images in the standing position?

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Axial-loaded magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can partially simulate the lumbar spine in patients in a standing position and potentially provides additional imaging findings that cannot be obtained with conventional MRI in the clinical assessment of patients with degenerative lumbar disease. Previous studies have shown that axial-loaded MRI demonstrates a significant reduction in the size of the dural sac compared with conventional MRI. However, there has been no study to compare the degree of olisthesis among conventional MRI, axial-loaded MRI, and upright X-ray imaging in

Visual-Vestibular Modification of Egomotion Perception in Patients With Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness in Supine and Standing Positions.

BACKGROUND: Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) has been classified by the Bárány Society as a chronic functional dizziness disorder with perceived unsteadiness. Symptoms typically worsen by upright posture or exposure to moving visual stimuli or complex visual patterns. The specific visual features remain poorly defined. We investigated how visual, vestibular, and combined visual-vestibular stimulation affects egomotion perception in PPPD patients, comparing responses in upright and supine positions to those of age-matched healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Participants performed a
