The ipsilateral registered stapedius reflex is often reduced for intensity levels greater than 105 dB (SPL). Because of a reduced impedance, that is not influenced by the reflex arc, an "inverse" reflex curve can be registered. This phenomenon described by Lehnhardt et al. (1) as a "acoustic'mechanical effect" occurs without latency and interferes at levels higher than 105 dB (SPL) with the reflectory impedance change. This effect often dominates and causes a pronounced inverse ipsilateral reaction characterized by an impedance reduction. Frequently middle ears with a steep gradient of the tym

To determine the brainstem origins and axonal routes of stapedius motoneurons, we labeled motoneurons by injecting cat stapedius muscles with horseradish peroxidase. Some injections were made in normal cats and some in cats in which the middle segment of the internal facial genu had been cut. By tracing labeled axons and by comparing the locations of labeled cell bodies in normal and lesioned cats, we divided stapedius motoneurons into two groups: "perifacial" and "accessory." Perifacial stapedius motoneurons have cell bodies located around the motor nucleus of the facial nerve and axons which

Tympanometric peak pressure, peak compensated static acoustic admittance (peak Ytm) and acoustic stapedius reflex (ASR) thresholds were obtained for a representative sample of 1565 older Australians who were participants in the Blue Mountains Hearing Study (BMHS). No significant age or gender effects were found for tympanometric peak pressure. Peak Ytm measures, however, decreased with age in the left ear only across all age groups and were consistently higher for men than for women. After allowing for hearing loss, the effect of age on ASR thresholds was inconsistent. An increase in ASR thres

The effect of stimulus duration on the threshold of the contralateral stapedius reflex was investigated in patients supplied with a Vienna cochlear implant (analog stimulation via CI) and compared to results of a normal-hearing reference group in case of acoustic stimulation. Changes in reflex threshold were determined at four frequencies (125, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz in case of electrostimulation and at 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 4,000 Hz for acoustic stimulation) and for five durations (30, 50, 100, 300 and 500 ms). The comparison of the two stimulation modes was accomplished by using the same in

The acoustic stapedius reflex (ASR) threshold on non-anesthetized rabbits was compared to some measures of the single auditory nerve fiber activity of rabbits. The observations were made on normal-hearing animals, with some additional data from noise-exposed individuals. The results showed that the ASR threshold was reached at a sound level above saturation of discharge rate for individual neurons at their characteristic frequency (CF) in normal animals. It was found, on the other hand, that the ASR threshold measured across frequencies from 0.25 to 12.0 kHz were at a level similar to that of

INTRODUCTION: The stapedius nerve is one of the branches of the facial nerve in the temporal bone. It supplies the stapedius muscle, which is responsible for the attenuation reflex that protects the inner ear from loud noises. The stapedius (acoustic) reflex (SR) test is useful in identifying the site of facial nerve injury. The return of the SR (acoustic) to normal after an injury is a good prognostic factor in the treatment of facial nerve palsy.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of FNP on the SR (acoustic) response and determine the acoustic reflex threshold (ART)

The tendon of the human stapedius muscle was studied in normal post mortem material and in clinical otosclerotic patients, using light and electron microscopy. Cross section profiles of collagen fibrils were measured in various regions of the tendon and the amount of elastin was estimated. The normal stapedius tendon consisted of three concentrically arranged portions: A cylindrical central part, a tube-like mid-portion, and a cortical layer. The central part was made up of collagen fibrils with only a few elastic fibers, the mid-portion contained collagen fibrils together with significantly m

The authors present the preliminary results of a range of their aero-space medicine studies, carried out in hypobaric chamber, in simulated flight and at different atmospheric pressures, to asses the tubal function in normal hearing people. The tympanometric determination through a Z072 Madsen inpendenzometer in static and dynamic conditions of barometric depression gave a clear and exact indications about the impedence variation capacity of the middle ear in similated flight, giving homogenous data which allow the use of this method in flying recruitment aptitude test routine.

The recording of intra-aural muscle reflexes elicited by acoustic stimulation is a routine method in clinical audiology. The most important quantitative examinations of the reflex dynamic, i.e. Metz recruitment and reflex decay in low frequencies, allow the judgement of function of the afferent pathway in the stimulated inner ear and acoustic nerve. Quantitative determinations of the efferent branch were carried out by several authors in a few normal subjects and in several patients with multiple sclerosis or facial palsy. Absolute acoustic impedance - a method yielding wide scattering - was u

BACKGROUND: One of the most important steps for good user performance with a cochlear implant (CI) is activation and programming, aimed at determining the dynamic range. In adults, current levels are determined by psychophysical measures. In babies, small children, or individuals with multiple disorders, this procedure requires techniques that may provide inconsistent responses because of auditory inexperience or the age of the child, making it a very difficult process that demands the collaboration of both the patient and the family.
PURPOSE: To study the relationship between the electricall

We tested 94 male and female persons with normal hearing. From these persons we elicited from the external ear canal the ipsilateral tactile stapedius muscle reflex and examined its dynamic properties. The electric stimulus consisted of a series of electric impulses of a duration of 30 msec lasting for 1 sec. The intensity ranged from 2.0-8.0 mA increasing in steps of 0.5 mA. Statistical evaluation showed a significant reflex dependence on stimulus intensity and sex of the volunteers but not on the volunteer's age. Starting with a stimulus intensity of 3.5 mA all tested persons showed good ref

A modified method for eliciting a stapedius reflex by electrical stimulation of the meatal skin is presented. In contrast to the acoustically elicited stapedius reflex, the electrically-induced response is only ipsilateral, and can be ablated by anesthesia of the meatal skin. Contralateral acoustical and ipsilateral electrical stimulations lead to a summation effect of the amplitude off the stapedius reflex. When presented simultaneously, subthreshold electrical and acoustical stimulations may produce a reflectory contraction of the stapedius muscle. Similar responses can be found in diseases

OBJECTIVES: The study compared stapedius reflex thresholds during presentation of acoustic stimuli in an open sound field (sf-SRT) in paediatric cochlear implant (CI) users with the MED-EL system and children with bilateral normal hearing sensitivity.
DESIGN: The sf-SRT was measured using open-sound-field acoustic stimulation with narrow-band noise (NBN) centred at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz, and broad-band noise (BBN). The sf-SRTs were measured twice in two different sessions.
STUDY SAMPLE: Nineteen unilateral paediatric CI users and twenty children with bilateral normal hearing sensitivity, with

The estimation of the maximum comfort loudness levels (MCL) by measurements of the electrically elicited stapedius reflex was examined in six experienced cochlear implant users supplied with the COMBI 40 implant system. The stapedius reflex was tested and loudness scaling was performed simultaneously using an up/down stimulation protocol close to the reflex threshold with automated recording of both test procedures. The electrical stapedius reflex threshold (ESRT) and loudness scaling were evaluated separately. Scaling at the reflex threshold ranged between normal and loud. The range of stimul

This study aimed to discuss the clinical implications associated with the absence of the stapedius muscle and concomitant otosclerosis. The causes of mixed hearing loss are presented based on its embryonic development, audiological tests, and high-resolution computed tomography (CT) imaging. This case describes a 35-year-old female patient diagnosed due to bilateral conductive hearing loss. The patient complained of a significant deterioration of hearing and speech understanding lasting for several months. Preoperative audiometric work-up revealed air-bone gap with the presence of Carhart's no
