PURPOSE: It has been suggested that low-grade infections could be the cause of arthrofibrosis. However, this hypothesis has not been conclusively proven. The aim of this study is to assess the incidence of unexpected positive cultures (UPC) in patients undergoing revision total joint arthroplasty for a diagnosis of arthrofibrosis.
METHODS: A retrospective single-centre review was performed. All patients who underwent an aseptic revision due to histologically confirmed arthrofibrosis (based on the synovial-like interface membrane (SLIM) criteria) were included. The incidence of UPC was then ca

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The agar dilution method is the approved method for determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) in fosfomycin susceptibility testing, whereas the broth dilution method is not recommended. This study aimed to investigate the potential of the gradient diffusion method as a more convenient alternative to agar dilution method for MIC evaluation, particularly for the susceptibility testing of Staphylococcus spp. and Enterococcus spp. to fosfomycin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 194 isolates of Staphylococcus spp. and Enterococcus spp. were collected from urine sa

Intracranial calcifications are relatively common computed tomographic findings in the field of neurosurgery, and cysticercosis, tuberculosis, HIV, and cryptococcus are acquired intracranial infections typically associated with calcifications. However, intracranial calcification caused by a bacterial brain abscess is rare. Here, we present a rare case of intracranial calcification caused by a bacterial brain abscess, from which staphylococcus hominis was isolated. To the best of our knowledge, no previous report has been published on intracranial calcification caused by bacterial brain abscess

BACKGROUND: The scabies mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, is a parasitic arachnid and cause of the infectious skin disease scabies in humans and mange in other animal species. Scabies infections are a major health problem, particularly in remote Indigenous communities in Australia, where secondary group A streptococcal and Staphylococcus aureus infections of scabies sores are thought to drive the high rate of rheumatic heart disease and chronic kidney disease.
RESULTS: We sequenced the genome of two samples of Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis obtained from unrelated patients with crusted scabies located

INTRODUCTION: Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) species are normal skin commensals but may also cause bacteremia. Therefore, isolating a CoNS species on blood culture often leads to a diagnostic dilemma about whether to consider the isolate as a true pathogen or not. This study was done to understand the distribution of various CoNS species in bloodstream infections, determine their antibiotic resistance patterns, and identify possible risk factors and patient outcomes in hospital settings.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Inpatients with confirmed bacteremia defined as isolation of the same CoN

Toxic Shock Syndrome Toxin-1 (TSST-1) producing Staphylococcus aureus associated with TSS was isolated from an abscess on buttock, from a two-year-old male child suffering from diarrhoea, high fever and shock. The isolate was subclassified into S. aureus var. hominis of CV type-D, and was lysed by phage 75 of Group-III. It was multidrug resistant, exhibited double ring (DR) CVRT pattern and also produced enterotoxin-C (SE-C). Out of 217 S. aureus strains from pyodermas, clinical sources, food poisonings and dairy foods, 139 (64.1%) produced enterotoxin. SE-C as single (33.8%) or in combination

Methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MR-CoNS) cause infectious diseases due to their potential to form biofilm and further colonization in hospital materials. This study evaluated the antibiotic susceptible phenotypes, biofilm-producing ability, and biofilm-associated genes (mecA, icaAD, bap, cna, and fnbA). Biofilm formation was detected through Congo red agar (CRA) method and MTP method. The presence of biofilm and associated genes in MR-CoNS were detected by PCR. A total of 310 (55.95%) isolates produced the biofilm. Among these isolates, Staphylococcus haemolyticus (34.8

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are one of the most common bovine mastitis pathogens found worldwide. In this study, we investigated the prevalence and distribution of CNS species in mastitis milk samples and further characterized the methicillin-resistant (MR) CNS. A total of 311 CNS were isolated from 3,692 quarter milk samples from 1,373 dairy cattle at 81 farms between 2013 and 2017. Further evaluation of the CNS isolates revealed 14 CNS species among the samples and 3 predominant species-namely, Staphylococcus chromogenes, Staphylococcus simulans, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. We report on two women (one 52-year-old who underwent kidney transplantation 15 months ago and the other, 71-year-old, undergoing hemodialysis) both with adult polycystic kidney disease who had to be hospitalized because of recurrent fever attacks up to 40 degrees C without any remarkable abdominal symptoms. Staphylococcus hominis and E. coli were recovered respectively from blood cultures of both patients. Evidence for the presence of a solitary infected cyst in the liver could only be obtained by computed tomography (CT) with i.v. administration of a contrast medium. In both cases the infect
