Mostly studied as a zoonosis, leptospirosis is also an environment-borne infection and most human cases originate from soil or water contaminations. Yet, only few studies have been interested in the survival of pathogenic Leptospira in freshwater. In this study, water microcosms were designed to evaluate the survival and virulence of Leptospira spp. for 2 years. Four commercial bottled drinking waters and a non-ionized water, all previously filter-sterilized, were studied. Either one of two Leptospira interrogans strains, one Leptospira borgpetersenii strain, or a saprophytic Leptospira biflex

Inorganic phosphate (Pi) starvation severely affects the normal growth and development of plants. Here, a Pi-responsive gene, named MdMYB2 (MDP0000823458), was cloned and functionally identified in apple. Overexpression of MdMYB2 regulated the expression of Pi starvation-induced (PSI) genes and then promoted phosphate assimilation and utilization. The ectopic expression of MdMYB2 in Arabidopsis influenced plant growth and flowering, which was partially rescued by application of exogenous gibberellin (GA). These results indicated that MdMYB2 may be an essential regulator in phosphate utilizatio

Autologous melanocyte transplantation for vitiligo treatment by use of melanocyte suspension has drawbacks including cell damage in cell preparation and transportation, difficult manipulation and low engraftment rate in acral vitiligious lesions. We have proposed the concept of cellular patch as an alternative solution. In the development of melanocyte patches, we have shown that chitosan membrane supports the growth and phenotype expression of melanocytes. Surprisingly, melanocytes spontaneously grow into three-dimensional spheroids on chitosan-coated surface. In this work, we demonstrate tha

The purpose of this work was to clarify the essentiality of glucose production from amino acids in obese subjects undergoing prolonged starvation and to provide an explanation for death after the depletion of lean body mass when some body fat is still available to meet body energy requirements. Five obese subjects fasted for 21 d. Nitrogen balance studies were combined with measurements of blood metabolite and hormone concentrations, indirect calorimetry, determination of body-composition changes, and catheterization techniques. Phenylacetate was administered from day 19 to day 21 to remove gl

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to establish an in vitro model of feline endothelial cells (FECs) undergoing apoptosis when cultured under various nutrient deprivation (starvation) conditions to investigate the protective effects of beraprost and its stereoisomers on endothelial cells.
METHODS: Various starvation conditions were tested to induce apoptosis in immortalized feline aortic endothelial cells as assessed by measuring caspase-3/7 activity. The anti-apoptotic effects of the racemic mixture of beraprost and the stereoisomers beraprost-314d and beraprost-315d contained in the racemic mixtu

Starvation-induced non-diabetic ketoacidosis (NDKA) is a typically mild condition. Here, we report life-threatening NDKA induced by a brief period of starvation in a patient with undiagnosed hyperthyroidism. A Japanese woman in her mid-30s, with intellectual disabilities and selective mutism, presented with a 3 day history of vomiting and anorexia. She developed severe high-anion-gap metabolic acidosis, marked by elevated serum ketone bodies and normal blood glucose levels. Furthermore, mild-to-moderate hyperthyroidism was detected, which was later diagnosed as Graves' disease. The patient req

Nicotinic acid receptor agonists have previously been shown to cause acute reductions in cardiac contractility. We sought to uncover the changes in cardiac metabolism underlying these alterations in function. In nine humans, we recorded cardiac energetics and function before and after a single oral dose of nicotinic acid using cardiac MRI to demonstrate contractile function and Phosphorus-31 (31 P) magnetic resonance spectroscopy to demonstrate myocardial energetics. Nicotinic Acid 400 mg lowered ejection fraction by 4% (64 ± 8% to 60 ± 7%, P = .03), and was accompanied by a fall in phosphocre

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is an important health problem worldwide. The only available vaccine is M. bovis/BCG, an attenuated mycobacterium that activates the innate and the acquired immune system after being phagocytosed by macrophages and dendritic cells. Vaccination fails to prevent adult pulmonary tuberculosis although it may have a protective effect in childhood infection. Understanding how BCG interacts with macrophages and other immunocompetent cells is crucial to develop new vaccines.
RESULTS: In this study we showed that macrophages phagocytose M. bovis/BCG bacilli with higher efficie

To become fertile, mammalian sperm must undergo a series of biochemical and physiological changes known as capacitation. These changes involve crosstalk between metabolic and signaling pathways and can be recapitulated in vitro. In this work, sperm were incubated in the absence of exogenous nutrients (starved) until they were no longer able to move. Once immotile, energy substrates were added back to the media and sperm motility was rescued. Following rescue, a significantly higher percentage of starved sperm attained hyperactivated motility and displayed increased ability to fertilize in vitr

The endogenous processes of Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis (referred to as Accumulibacter), a known polyphosphate-accumulating organism (PAO) responsible for enhanced biological phosphorus removal systems (EBPR), were characterized during 8-day starvation under anaerobic, anoxic, aerobic and intermittent aerobic-anaerobic conditions. A lab-scale EBPR culture with Accumulibacter representing over 85% of the entire bacterial population as quantified with fluorescence in-situ hybridization was used in the study. Cell decay rates were found to be negligible under anaerobic and anoxic conditi

A case of severe starvation ketoacidosis developing during pregnancy is presented. The insulinopenic/insulin-resistant state found during fasting in late gestation predisposes to ketosis. Superimposition of stress hormones, which further augment lipolysis, exacerbates the degree of ketoacidosis. In our patient, gestational diabetes, twin pregnancies, preterm labor, and occult infection were factors that contributed to severe starvation ketoacidosis. Diagnosis was delayed because starvation ketosis is not generally considered to be a cause of severe acidosis, and because the anion gap was not e

Normal human lymphoblasts starved for each of several essential, but not essential, amino acids had decreased DNA and RNA synthesis but no change in free intracellular purine nucleotides. The rates of purine nucleotide synthesis via the de novo and salvage pathways were measured by incorporating [14C]formate and [14C]hypoxanthine labels, respectively, into lymphoblasts starved for an amino acid or treated with a protein synthesis inhibitor. After 3 h of starvation, purine synthesis via the de novo pathway decreased 90% and via the salvage pathway decreased 60%. Cycloheximide and puromycin each

Three months after gastric partitioning for morbid obesity, two patients developed an unusual and severe form of polyneuropathy that affected their sense of position maximally. This disorder produced severe ataxia of the upper extremities and trunk, and pseudochorea. One patient died and the autopsy showed an extensive demyelinating polyneuropathy. Neuronal cell bodies in the anterior horns and dorsal root ganglia showed extensive accumulations of lipofuscin and Schwann cells showed extensive accumulations of lipid. This neuronal and Schwann cell lipidosis appears to result from starvation of

BACKGROUND: Research has highlighted the physical complications of starvation, but there is less research examining the psychological effects of starvation in humans.
AIMS: This scoping review synthesises literature on the non-physical effects of starvation in humans.
METHOD: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Global Health for studies published between 1946 and 2023 examining the non-physical effects of starvation in individuals aged 2-79 years, including those who were starved, malnourished, stunted, wasted, underweight, had a restrictive eating disorder, o

Starvation-related deaths are not uncommon worldwide particularly in economically underdeveloped regions. However, the forensic characterization of such cases remains limited due to underdeveloped local forensic systems. Here we presented a case of a neonate who died of starvation after being abandoned in the wild for 14 days, and 9 additional reported cases were identified by a systematic search of PubMed and MEDLINE databases. Based on these findings, the key forensic characteristics were summarized. Significant reductions in body or organ weight were consistently documented across all ten c

OBJECTIVES: Starvation ketosis may occur in children during intercurrent illnesses due to metabolic adaptation to fasting, resulting in significant ketonemia and sometimes ketoacidosis. Also known as accelerated starvation, common symptoms are vomiting, lethargy, and seizures. Previous studies found the prevalence of ketotic hypoglycemia to be 4 per 100,000 presentations to the emergency department (ED). We hypothesized that the prevalence had been underestimated due to the retrospective nature and restricted definitions of previous studies. Our aim was to determine if a prospective study woul

The ever-changing landscape of dieting and its correlation with health outcomes have continued to evolve with time. New diets appear and disappear just as quickly as they gain notoriety. This is a rare case of a 67-year-old female with a history of type II diabetes who presented with generalized weakness, nausea, and vomiting, and was found to have severe anion gap metabolic acidosis. In an effort to lose weight, she was combining a ketogenic diet with prolonged fasting and exogenous ketone supplement use that she purchased online. The patient reported drinking an exogenous ketone ester supple

Coeliac disease is the most well-known cause of villous atrophy in duodenal biopsies. Other well recognised causes of villous atrophy include infection with Giardia duodenalis and HIV, peptic duodenitis, drug-induced enteropathy, common variable immunodeficiency, Crohn's disease, Whipple's disease, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, eosinophilic gastroenteritis, tropical or collagenous sprue and autoimmune enteropathy. While mucosal adaptation due to malnutrition, leading to villous atrophy, has been reported in paediatric populations in Africa and South America, in hibernating animals and

Interactions between the gut microbiome and the brain are of increasing interest to both researchers and clinicians. Evidence is mounting on the causal role of an altered gut microbiome in inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and diabetes, and psychiatric diseases like anxiety and depression. Mechanisms include altered energy harvest from food, hormonal changes, increased gut permeability, inflammation, immune response, and a direct influence on the brain and behavior. Anorexia nervosa (AN) is the third most common disease in adolescence and exacts a hig
