Advanced insights into the adsorption mechanism of coumarin compounds on mouse olfactory receptors: a statistical physics, thermodynamic, and molecular docking analysis.

In this paper, a combined statistical physics and computational modeling framework was used to elucidate the molecular mechanism of olfaction through a putative adsorption process in which coumarin compounds bind to the mouse olfactory receptors Olfr924, Olfr285, and Olfr1016. Adsorption isotherms derived from experimental data were analyzed using both monolayer and double-layer statistical physics models, enabling the quantitative determination of steric and energetic parameters governing odorant-receptor interactions. The steric analysis reveals diverse anchoring behaviors, with coumarin mol

Speed heterogeneity and non-Gaussian transport in active particles: a survival-hazard framework.

Non-Gaussian displacement statistics in active-particle systems are often associated with heterogeneity in particle motility. In this work, we develop an estimation-based statistical framework that links speed distributions inferred from experimental data to effective-diffusivity and displacement statistics in active Brownian particles (ABPs) and active particles with passive noise (APPs). Rayleigh, Weibull, and generalized gamma distributions are fitted by maximum likelihood to a sample of 53 representative speeds extracted from experimental cell trajectories, and the candidate models are com

Chemometric analysis of ethoxylated polymer products using extracted MALDI-TOF-MS peak distribution features.

MALDI-TOF MS (matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry) of ethoxylate products produces spectra with distributions of regularly spaced peaks resulting from the addition of monomer units of ethylene oxide to the oligomer. We show that overlapping peak distributions from the different ethoxylated constituents of natural raw materials can be resolved, so that features of the individual distributions (m/z at distribution maximum, intensity at the distribution maximum, width of the distribution at half height, and ratio of the distribution to the major peak distr

Differential Mueller matrix imaging of partially depolarizing optically anisotropic biological tissues.

Since recently, a number of innovative polarization-based optical imaging modalities have been introduced and extensively used in various biomedical applications, with an ultimate aim to attain the practical tool for the optical biopsy and functional characterization of biological tissues. The techniques utilize polarization properties of light and Mueller matrix mapping of microscopic images of histological sections of biological tissues or polycrystalline films of biological fluids. The main drawback of currently developed laser polarimetry approaches and Mueller matrix mapping techniques is

Generative AI for efficient statistical computation of fluids.

We present GenCFD, a generative modeling approach for fast, accurate, and robust statistical computation of three-dimensional turbulent fluid flows. While motivated from conditional score-based diffusion models, GenCFD is both empirically and theoretically validated on generating turbulent flows. Extensive numerical experimentation of challenging three-dimensional fluids demonstrates that GenCFD provides an accurate approximation of relevant statistical quantities of interest while also efficiently generating high-quality realistic samples of such flows. Moreover, we present rigorous theoretic

A retrospective statistical analysis of the Fusarium keratitis epidemic of 2004-2006.

PURPOSE: A retrospective statistical analysis of the Fusarium keratitis epidemic of 2004-2006 was performed. METHODS: Poisson and binomial probability distributions were performed in conjunction with statistical data reported from Singapore's Fusarium keratitis outbreak in order to identify the earliest theoretical point in time that this outbreak and its cause could have been recognized. RESULTS: The outbreak in Singapore could, theoretically, have been recognized after only three months (three cases), P = 0.0067. The cause of the Singapore outbreak could, theoretically, have been determine

The analysis of the ultraviolet radiation doses required to produce erythemal responses in normal skin.

When the abnormality of a skin response to sunlight is expressed in terms of a decreased minimum erythemal dose (MED) on photo-testing, it is essential to know the range of response in normal skin. In any homogeneous population, the statistical distribution of the MED is skewed and is not Gaussian (normal), but a Gaussian distribution can be fitted to the logarithm of the MED. Using established methods of probit analysis, such 'lognormal' distributions have been fitted to the observed proportions of erythemal responses to a series of test exposure doses of UV radiation (250-365 nm), thus provi

Robust Optimization for Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy to Redistribute High Linear Energy Transfer from Nearby Critical Organs to Tumors in Head and Neck Cancer.

PURPOSE: We propose linear energy transfer (LET)-guided robust optimization in intensity modulated proton therapy for head and neck cancer. This method simultaneously considers LET and physical dose distributions of tumors and organs at risk (OARs) with uncertainties. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Fourteen patients with head and neck cancer were included in this retrospective study. Cord, brain stem, brain, and oral cavity were considered. Two algorithms, voxel-wise worst-case robust optimization and LET-guided robust optimization (LETRO), were used to generate intensity modulated proton therapy pla

Modeling spatially dependent count time series data using COM-poisson INGARCH Models.

Count time series frequently exhibit serial dependence and either overdispersion or underdispersion relative to the Poisson equidispersion assumption. When such counts are observed across multiple locations, spatial dependence often arises, resulting in complex spatio-temporal dependency structures that are not adequately accommodated by standard integer-valued generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (INGARCH) models. To address these challenges, this study proposes a spatial Conway-Maxwell-Poisson INGARCH (SP-COM-INGARCH) framework that jointly models temporal dependence, sp

Theoretical implementation of prior knowledge in the design of a multi-scale prosthesis satisfaction questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: In product development for lower limb prosthetic devices, a set of special criteria needs to be met. Prosthetic devices have a direct impact on the rehabilitation process after an amputation with both perceived technological and psychological aspects playing an important role. However, available psychometric questionnaires fail to consider the important links between these two dimensions. In this article a probabilistic latent trait model is proposed with seven technical and psychological factors which measure satisfaction with the prosthesis. The results of a first study are used

A comparison of multiplicity adjustment strategies for correlated binary endpoints.

Several Bonferroni-type adjustments have been proposed to control for family wise type I error among multiple tests. However, many of the approaches disregard the correlation among endpoints. This can result in a conservative hypothesis testing strategy. The James procedure is an alternative approach that accounts for multiplicity among correlated continuous endpoints. Here a simulation study compares four Bonferroni-type alpha-adjustments (Bonferroni, Dunn-Sidák, Holm, and Hochberg) and the James p-value adjustment when used for multiple correlated binary variables. These procedures provided

Semiparametric methods for mapping quantitative trait loci with censored data.

Statistical methods for the detection of genes influencing quantitative traits with the aid of genetic markers are well developed for normally distributed, fully observed phenotypes. Many experiments are concerned with failure-time phenotypes, which have skewed distributions and which are usually subject to censoring because of random loss to follow-up, failures from competing causes, or limited duration of the experiment. In this article, we develop semiparametric statistical methods for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTLs) based on censored failure-time phenotypes. We formulate the effects

Statistical biases due to anonymization evaluated in an open clinical dataset from COVID-19 patients.

Anonymization has the potential to foster the sharing of medical data. State-of-the-art methods use mathematical models to modify data to reduce privacy risks. However, the degree of protection must be balanced against the impact on statistical properties. We studied an extreme case of this trade-off: the statistical validity of an open medical dataset based on the German National Pandemic Cohort Network (NAPKON), which was prepared for publication using a strong anonymization procedure. Descriptive statistics and results of regression analyses were compared before and after anonymization of m

Inferential and descriptive influences on measures of respiratory sinus arrhythmia: sampling rate, R-wave trigger accuracy, and variance estimates.

The use of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is dependent on several quantification factors. The statistical consequences of sampling rate, R-wave trigger accuracy, and the data structure of RSA estimates were evaluated via simulations and simulated modifications. Simulations demonstrated that sampling rate determined the amplitude of the smallest oscillation that could be accurately described. When the amplitude of the oscillation was smaller in milliseconds than the sampling interval, all smaller oscillations, regardless of amplitude, were indiscriminately assigned a default value defined a

Insertion sequence distribution bias in Archaea.

Insertion sequences (IS) are common transposable elements in Archaea. Intergenic IS elements are usually less harmful than intragenic ISs, simply because they are less likely to disrupt host gene function. However, because regulatory sequences are intergenic and upstream of genes, we hypothesized that not all intergenic regions are selectively equivalent for IS insertion. We tested this hypothesis by analyzing the distributions of intergenic IS elements within 155 fully sequenced archaeal genomes. Of the 22 genomes with enough IS elements for statistical analysis, five have significantly fewer

Distribution-free inference on contrasts of arbitrary summary measures of survival.

We present an approach for inference on contrasts of clinically meaningful functionals of a survivor distribution (e.g., restricted mean, quantiles) that can avoid strong parametric or semiparametric assumptions on the underlying structure of the data. In this multistage approach, we first use an adaptive predictive model to estimate conditional survival distributions based on covariates. We then estimate nonparametrically one or more functionals of survival from the covariate-specific survival curves and evaluated contrasts of those functionals. We find that the use of an adaptive nonparametr

Economic values under inappropriate normal distribution assumptions.

The objectives of this study were to quantify the errors in economic values (EVs) for traits affected by cost or price thresholds when skewed or kurtotic distributions of varying degree are assumed to be normal and when data with a normal distribution is subject to censoring. EVs were estimated for a continuous trait with dichotomous economic implications because of a price premium or penalty arising from a threshold ranging between -4 and 4 standard deviations from the mean. In order to evaluate the impacts of skewness, positive and negative excess kurtosis, standard skew normal, Pearson and

Box and whisker plots for graphic presentation of audiometric results of conductive hearing loss treatment.

The Committee on Hearing and Equilibrium of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery has published guidelines for the reporting of audiometric results of middle ear interventions. It recommends the reporting of several audiometric variables by means of two summary parameters: means and standard deviation. This article advocates the use of other summary statistics, namely the median, quartiles, and extremes, because they do not require a normal distribution of the audiometric data and they are not sensitive to variations of the extreme values. On the basis of the exploratory

Probabilistically defining environmentally relevant concentrations in ecotoxicology.

A long-standing issue in ecotoxicology is the arbitrarily chosen and ambiguous definition of "environmentally relevant" concentrations, which undermines research comparability and hampers risk characterization. Here, we propose a probabilistic framework that anchors exposure levels to percentiles of environmental concentration distributions, defining low (<5th percentile), typical (5th to 95th percentiles), and high (>95th percentile) concentrations, as well as worst-case scenarios (e.g., the 99th percentile) for specific contexts. This framework transforms test concentration selection from a

Analysis of the distribution of cutaneous perforators in cutaneous flaps.

An anatomic and statistical analysis was performed on the distribution of cutaneous perforators that perfuse the scapular, radial forearm, and lateral arm cutaneous flaps. Perforators were categorized as direct, terminal, and intransitive, depending upon perforator origin and termination site relative to the source artery. Statistical cluster analysis of perforator distributions was performed to determine the regions in which cutaneous perforators are consistently found. The scapular and radial forearm flaps could be divided into up to three well-perfused segments. The analysis predicted the p
