Tetrandrine, an alkaloid from S. tetrandra exhibits anti-hypertensive and sleep-enhancing effects in SHR via different mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders have been found to be associated with hypertension in both cross-sectional and longitudinal epidemiological studies. Tetrandrine, a major component of Stephania tetrandra, is well known as an antihypertensive agent. The anti-hypertension mechanism mainly relies on its L-type calcium channel blocking property. In the previous study, tetrandrine revealed both anti-hypertension and hypnotic effects in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). PURPOSE: This study aims to elucidate whether the antihypertensive mechanism of tetrandrine in SHRs is relevant to its hypnotic e

Cepharanthine, a valuable sanative alternative for hepatocellular carcinoma through regulating Hippo-Yes-associated protein signal transduction.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) stands as a prevalent form of primary liver cancer, distinguished by challenging diagnosis and grim prognoses. Its global mortality rate is on the rise, compounded by the insensitivity of patients with HCC to conventional anticancer medications. The dysregulation of the Hippo-Yes-associated protein (YAP) signaling pathway closely intertwines with HCC progression, notably marked by a significant elevation in YAP expression within hepatocellular carcinoma. Cepharanthine, derived primarily from the Stephania cepharantha Hayata plant, emerges as a natural compound re

Protective effect of fangchinoline on cyanide-induced neurotoxicity in cultured rat cerebellar granule cells.

The present study was performed to examine the effect of fangchinoline, a bis- benzylisoquinoline alkaloid, which exhibits the characteristics of a Ca2+ channel blocker, on cyanide-induced neurotoxicity using cultured rat cerebellar granule neurons. NaCN produced a concentration-dependent reduction of cell viability, which was blocked by MK-801, an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, verapamil, L-type Ca2+ channel blocker, and L-NAME, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor. Pretreatment with fangchinoline over a concentration range of 0.1 to 10 microM significantly decreased the NaCN-i

[Discovery, isolation and structural identification of alkaloid glycosides in six traditional Chinese medicine such as Coptis chinensis].

Alkaloids are important active ingredients occurring in many traditional Chinese medicines, and alkaloid glycosides are one of their existence forms. The introduction of saccharide units improves the water solubility of alkaloid glycosides thus presenting better biological activity.Because of the low content in plants, alkaloid glycosides have been not comprehensively studied. In this study, ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight-tandem mass spectrometry(UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS) was employed to identify and analyze the alkaloid glycosides in Coptis chinensis, Phellodendr

Cepharanthine Triggers Ferroptosis in Gastric Cancer by PINK1/FUNDC1-Mediated Mitophagy-Dependent GPX4 Degradation.

Cepharanthine (CEP), a natural compound derived from the plant Stephania cephalantha Hayata, demonstrates pharmacological properties including anti-inflammatory, immuno-regulatory, antiviral, antitumor and antiparasitic effects. Due to its insidious progression and drug resistance, gastric cancer (GC) continues to have a high incidence and mortality rate worldwide. While the great potential of ferroptosis in cancer therapy is well-established, and CEP has shown potential antitumor activity, the role of ferroptosis in CEP's impact on GC remains unknown. Our aim in this study is to uncover what

In vitro activity of a combination of bacteriophages and antimicrobial plant extracts.

The continuing threat of antimicrobial resistance presents a considerable challenge to researchers to develop novel strategies ensuring that bacterial infections remain treatable. Many plant extracts have been shown to have antibacterial properties and could potentially be combined with other antibacterial agents to create more effective formulations. In this study, the antibacterial activity of three plant extracts and virulent bacteriophages have been assessed as individual components and in combination. When assessed with a modified suspension test, these plant extracts also exhibit antivir

Tetrandrine induces apoptosis in hepatic stellate cells.

We have previously reported that tetrandrine reduced hepatic stellate cell activation and collagen accumulation in liver fibrosis induced by biliary obstruction. In the present study, we examined the apoptosis-inducing effect of tetrandrine on activated hepatic stellate cells, as the therapeutic goal in hepatic fibrosis is to eliminate the activated hepatic stellate cells by apoptosis. We used rat hepatic stellate cells transformed by Simian virus 40 (T-HSC/Cl-6) to overcome the limitations inherent in studying primary cultures of hepatic stellate cells. Tetrandrine treatment at doses of 25 an
