INTRODUCTION: Neurosurgery and Maxillofacial Surgery Departments of Limoges University Hospital Centre have developed a new concept of a custom made ceramic implant in hydroxyapatite (HA) for the reconstruction of large and complex craniofacial bone defects (more than 25 cm(2)).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The manufacturing process of the implants used a stereolithography technique that produces implants with three-dimensional shapes derived directly from the scan file of the patient's skull without moulding or machining. Eight patients received 8 implants between 2005 and 2008.
RESULTS: The surg

A new technique of manufacturing three-dimensional (3D) hard tissue biomodels is described. The models, derived from computed tomography data, were constructed by a computer-controlled manufacturing device known as stereolithography apparatus (SLA). Selected cases of patients with facial deformities were presented to illustrate clinical applications of the SLA biomodelling. Physical demonstration of the bony internal anatomy in these patients promoted better conceptualization of the disease process, allowing optimal input into the management decision, pre-operative planning and choice of surgi

4D printing technology enables the fabrication of constructs capable of shape transformation when exposed to external stimuli. Epoxy-based shape memory polymers (SMPs) have shown great potential for various 4D printing applications. However, due to their thermocurable nature, the fabrication of 4D constructs using epoxy-based materials is often limited to a mold casting strategy, limiting design flexibility and often yielding flat structures. In this work, photocurable smart 4D inks are developed by integrating polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PD) into epoxy-based materials. These inks undergo

The spinal cord is one of the most important part of the human nervous system and great importance is placed on developing the best treatment for its damage. 3D bio-printing technology, and the fabrication of special scaffolds using it, is a potential solution for regenerating damage in spinal cord injuries (SCIs). Bio-printing can be divided into indirect and direct bio-printing, while among the bio-printing methods, inkjet bio-printing, fused deposition modeling (FDM), extrusion bio-printing, or light-assisted bio-printing can be distinguished. The last group can be in turn divided into seve

Despite remarkable progress in the last decade in transdermal microneedle drug delivery systems, great difficulties in precisely manufacturing microneedles with sophisticated microstructures still strongly retard their practical applications. Herein we propose morphology-customized microneedles (spiral, conical, cylindroid, ring-like, arrow-like and tree-like) fabricated by stereolithography (SLA) based 3D-printing technique, and in-depth investigate the correlation between the customized morphologies and the received qualities of the corresponding microneedles such as the mechanical propertie

The application of computed tomography (CT) and the use of computer software for dental implant therapy have significantly increased during the last several years. Dental implant positioning can be either "partially guided," where only osteotomy sites are prepared using sequential, removable surgical drilling guides (generated using computer software and through the process of stereolithography), or "totally guided," whereby one guide is used for osteotomy site preparation as well as implant delivery. Recently, the guided delivery of manufacturer-specific internal-connection implants has becom

Loss of bone in the mandible after tooth removal is associated with anatomic and aesthetic complications and instability of the mandibular complete denture. This continuing bone loss is not limited to alveolar bone; portions of the basal bone may also be resorbed. Thus, mandibular complete denture is the most unstable, unretentive, conventional prosthesis fabricated in routine dental practice. Root-form endosteal implants cannot always be placed in advanced atrophic mandibles without autogenous bone grafting (from either the iliac hip crest or another site) or bone regeneration. The ramus fram

Rational spatiotemporal irradiation of cellulose-based hydrogels (carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), citric acid, and riboflavin) using a laser diode stereolithography 3D printer obtained architectures referred to as photodegradation addressable hydrogels (PAHs). Under irradiation, these PAHs engage in an unprecedented spatially resolved zonal swelling illustrating marked but controllable changes in swelling and thickness while concomitantly obtaining improved oxygen transmission rate values by 5 times. XPS, carboxyl content, and swelling data comparisons of hydrogel formulations show that photodeg

Direct-current triboelectric nanogenerators (DC-TENGs) attract attention for their high output and low crest factor. However, inefficient spatial layouts create harmful discharge regions, causing internal charge loss. Inspired by Aesop's fable "The Crow and the Pitcher," projection micro stereolithography integrates densely packed dual-channel charge-collecting electrodes into the slider, developing an Aesop's Fables-inspired DC-TENG (AF-TENG) based on extreme spatial compression. This design creates efficient charge-release pathways and achieves a record surface charge density of 14.2 mC m- 2

The auxetic structures are highly effective in bone implants due to their unique deformation characteristics. However, ideal tissue engineering scaffolds must possess suitable mechanical properties and biocompatibility. The biological effects of auxetic structures require further study. In this study, three types of 3D re-entrant honeycomb structures with varying angles of 75°, 90°, and 105° were designed. These structures were fabricated by stereolithography 3D printing technology. Finite element simulations and compression tests were conducted to evaluate their mechanical properties. Scaffol

Renewable energy-based technologies and increasing IoT (Internet of Things) objects population necessarily require proper energy storage devices to exist. In the view of customized and portable devices, Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques offer the possibility to fabricate 2D to 3D features for functional applications. Among the different AM techniques extensively explored to produce energy storage devices, direct ink writing is one of the most investigated, despite the poor achievable resolution. Herein, we present the development and characterization of an innovative resin which can be em

Development of new additive manufacturing materials often requires the production of several batches of relatively large volumes in order to print and test objects. This can be difficult for many materials that are expensive or difficult to produce in large volumes on the laboratory scale. Bioprinter systems are advantageous in this regard, however, commercial systems are expensive or do not have the ability to use photopolymers. Herein, we outline a Syringe Pump Extruder and Curing System (SPECS) modification for inexpensive filament-based 3D printers which enables the use of standard bioplot

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has undergone an exponential growth in popularity due to its revolutionary and near limitless manufacturing capabilities. Recent trends have seen this technology utilized across a variety of scientific disciplines, including the measurement sciences, but precise fabrication of optical components for high-performance biosensing has not yet been demonstrated. We report here 3D printing of high-quality, custom prisms by stereolithography that enable Kretschmann-configured plasmonic sensing of bacterial toxins. Simple benchtop polishing procedures render a smooth su
